Panamanians responded to U.S. occupation with proclamations, protests, and everyday forms of resistance and acquiescence. Excellent book. It taught me a lot of the history that I didn;t understand when I was growing up in what was known as the Canal Zone in Gamboa; later renamed Santa Cruz for whatever reason. A livid account of events that I now come to understand after all these years. A must read!

READ CAREFULLY--INCLUDING ENDNOTES.

If you agree with this statement by the author (page 88), as it pertains to VIETNAM:
" With the triumph of the Vietnamese, Angolan, and Mozambiquean independence movements in 1975,..."
go ahead and buy this book--you'll love it. It will reinforce your liberal beliefs.
I believe the author has made "mountains out of molehills" to prove a questionable thesis. Of course, I am prejudiced, since I serve in the old Canal Zone for two military tours and I also married one of the natives.

Insulting from every angle

I was excited to read this book and had it on my "wish list" for a few weeks before its release earlier this year, so I went into it with high expectations. I am not a true Zonian in the original sense of the word, I did live in the Canal Zone Area in the 1980s and knew quite a few Zonians, Panamians, and many of the other races, cultures and ethnic groups of whom Donoghue writes. (In the 2000s sense of the word "Zonian," I am an honorary Zonian.) He starts the book off with a bang-- a shocking story that will grab your attention and probably horrify you, as it did me.
It seems that Donohue went in search of the ugliest possible documentation for every point he was trying to make. While it's true that the Canal Zone wasn't always the picture of 2014 political correctness, it was a different time and the world was a different place EVERYWHERE. He made the entire American population sound like a bunch of chauvinist redneck indulgent racists who did nothing but lounge around and bring rum cocktails while being waited on by brown servants who hated them. And he seemed to find Panamians and Americans who backed up his statements. I'd love to see the cutting room floor because these are NOT the people I knew, and this is not the place in which I grew up. The people I knew were a wonderful group of people who worked together and played together, learned together and bonded over a land that was, and still is, a special place.
The Zone as a Borderland-- as a US "empire" settlement is how "outsiders" have viewed the Zone for decades. If Mr Donoghue had wanted to talk to Zonians, every year there is a Zonian Reunion filled with people of ALL colors, of ALL races. The Reunion is a non-segregated 4 day party of thousand of people who LOVE Panama-- Panama of the Zone and Panama the Country. The odd-Zonian who was afraid to cross this "fence" (which seems to be debatable as to whether or not it even existed-- why are there no pictures? Why is there NO photographic evidence of this 8-foot cyclone fence you describe-- except on the US Military bases) was few and far between. There are ugly stories from every city on this planet, and one can make the argument that anyplace is ugly based on the unfortunate events and perceived injustices experienced by a few people. But when the 1979 Treaties were signed, ALL Panamians were NOT as happy as the media would make you think. The US Government entered into the Treaties with an oppressive dictator-- but this is another story.
Bottom line-- if you want to feel like crap about being an American, and you want to read a bunch of stories about how mean Americans could be back in the days before racial equality, in the days before African Americans and women had the right to vote, before Brown vs the Board of Education... If you want to read a virtual police blotter of ugly stories showing how the bottom of the barrel can get another 15 minutes in the spotlight… If you want to hear about the Mean Americans… Then this is the book for you. Myself, I am sorry I wasted my time, energy and emotions on it. It's a nasty swipe at people on both sides of the Zone Border, and it would've been nice to have included more of the other side of the coin.
