Arts of the Political: New Openings for the Left, by Ash Amin, Nigel Thrift

In the West, "the Left," understood as a loose conglomeration of interests centered around the goal of a fairer and more equal society, still struggles to make its voice heard and its influence felt, even amid an overwhelming global recession. In Arts of the Political: New Openings for the Left, Ash Amin and Nigel Thrift argue that only by broadening the domain of what is considered political and what can be made into politics will the Left be able to respond forcefully to injustice and inequality. In particular, the Left requires a more imaginative and experimental approach to the politics of creating a better society. The authors propose three political arts that they consider crucial to transforming the Left: boosting invention, leveraging organization, and mobilizing affect. They maintain that successful Left political movements tend to surpass traditional notions of politics and open up political agency to these kinds of considerations. In other words, rather than providing another blueprint for the future, Amin and Thrift concentrate their attention on a more modest examination of the conduct of politics itself and the ways that it can be made more effective.

Review
"The fundamental question of this exciting book is not 'What is the Left?' Instead, Ash Amin and Nigel Thrift provoke us to ask what are the new ways of being human in the twenty-first century and what are the new forms of political action to meet these challenges." (David Stark, author of The Sense of Dissonance: Accounts of Worth in Economic Life)

"The Left urgently needs redefinition and rejuvenation during a time when the forces of the Right are highly mobilized, blowback from several nonhuman forces has intensified, and a progressive formation will take the form of a pluralist assemblage. Ash Amin and Nigel Thrift confront these issues in creative ways, as they explore the levels and modes needed to activate a progressive movement. This is a bracing and timely book." (William E. Connolly, author of A World of Becoming)

“This is a fine and rousing book, and required reading for Messrs Miliband and Cruddas. What its heroic authors say is true, timely and damned difficult. But to outface the monster of corporate capitalism, protean, international but nonetheless fissiparous, often cowardly, always corrupt, Ash Amin and Nigel Thrift have contrived this novel and vigorous weapon of dissent, so much required to fight the rough beast of a new epoch now slouching towards Wall Street to be born." (Fred Inglis Times Higher)

“This book makes a much-needed attempt to revamp the Left’s struggle to ‘voice a politics of social equality and justice’. Problematizing the Left’s ongoing failure to capture and cohere people’s aspirations, to organize politically and to secure achievements, they focus on an essential and, as they rightly claim, neglected aspect of Left politics: the art of doing politics." (Jessica Schmidt Radical Philosophy)

"This book is about what the Left should be proud of, what it can do to recapture the imagination of peoples to energize them into social action, and what horizons lay ahead in terms of actionable strategies. . . . [M]any of us interested in tipping the scales of justice on the side of integrity and dignity should be reading this wonderful and very useful book.”  (Eduardo Mendieta City)

"The authors of this provocative and insightful book promote an attitude of innovation and experimentation as a means to revive the fortunes of the western Left." (James Martin European Political Science)

The Promise of Happiness, by Sara Ahmed

The Promise of Happiness is a provocative cultural critique of the imperative to be happy. It asks what follows when we make our desires and even our own happiness conditional on the happiness of others: “I just want you to be happy”; “I’m happy if you’re happy.” Combining philosophy and feminist cultural studies, Sara Ahmed reveals the affective and moral work performed by the “happiness duty,” the expectation that we will be made happy by taking part in that which is deemed good, and that by being happy ourselves, we will make others happy. Ahmed maintains that happiness is a promise that directs us toward certain life choices and away from others. Happiness is promised to those willing to live their lives in the right way.

Ahmed draws on the intellectual history of happiness, from classical accounts of ethics as the good life, through seventeenth-century writings on affect and the passions, eighteenth-century debates on virtue and education, and nineteenth-century utilitarianism. She engages with feminist, antiracist, and queer critics who have shown how happiness is used to justify social oppression, and how challenging oppression causes unhappiness. Reading novels and films including Mrs. Dalloway, The Well of Loneliness, Bend It Like Beckham, and Children of Men, Ahmed considers the plight of the figures who challenge and are challenged by the attribution of happiness to particular objects or social ideals: the feminist killjoy, the unhappy queer, the angry black woman, and the melancholic migrant. Through her readings she raises critical questions about the moral order imposed by the injunction to be happy.

In an Abusive State: How Neoliberalism Appropriated the Feminist Movement against Sexual Violence, by Kristin Bumiller

In an Abusive State puts forth a powerful argument: that the feminist campaign to stop sexual violence has entered into a problematic alliance with the neoliberal state. Kristin Bumiller chronicles the evolution of this alliance by examining the history of the anti-violence campaign, the production of cultural images about sexual violence, professional discourses on intimate violence, and the everyday lives of battered women. She also scrutinizes the rhetoric of high-profile rape trials and the expansion of feminist concerns about sexual violence into the international human-rights arena. In the process, Bumiller reveals how the feminist fight against sexual violence has been shaped over recent decades by dramatic shifts in welfare policies, incarceration rates, and the surveillance role of social-service bureaucracies.

Drawing on archival research, individual case studies, testimonies of rape victims, and interviews with battered women, Bumiller raises fundamental concerns about the construction of sexual violence as a social problem. She describes how placing the issue of sexual violence on the public agenda has polarized gender- and race-based interests. She contends that as the social welfare state has intensified regulation and control, the availability of services for battered women and rape victims has become increasingly linked to their status as victims and their ability to recognize their problems in medical and psychological terms. Bumiller suggests that to counteract these tendencies, sexual violence should primarily be addressed in the context of communities and in terms of its links to social disadvantage. In an Abusive State is an impassioned call for feminists to reflect on how the co-optation of their movement by the neoliberal state creates the potential to inadvertently harm impoverished women and support punitive and racially based crime control efforts.

Pretty Modern: Beauty, Sex, and Plastic Surgery in Brazil, by Alexander Edmonds

Pretty Modern is a riveting account of Brazil’s emergence as a global leader in plastic surgery. Intrigued by a Carnaval parade that mysteriously paid homage to a Rio de Janeiro plastic surgeon, anthropologist Alexander Edmonds conducted research that took him from Ipanema socialite circles to glitzy telenovela studios to the packed waiting rooms of public hospitals offering free cosmetic surgery. The result is provocative exploration of the erotic, commercial, and intimate aspects of beauty in a nation with extremes of wealth and poverty and a reputation for natural sensuality. Drawing on conversations with maids and their elite mistresses, divorced housewives, black celebrities, and favela residents aspiring to be fashion models, Edmonds analyzes what sexual desirability means and does for women in different social positions. He argues that beauty is a distinct realm of modern experience that does not simply reflect other inequalities. It mimics the ambiguous emancipatory potential of capital, challenging traditional hierarchies while luring consumers into a sexual culture that reduces the body to the brute biological criteria of attractiveness. Illustrated with color photographs, Pretty Modern offers a fresh theoretical perspective on the significance of female beauty in consumer capitalism.

Review
“A fresh, smart, insightful, entertaining, and compelling book about a topic—cosmetic surgery—that many of us thought had self-combusted in the 1990s amid irresolvable debates about whether women who wanted bigger breasts were subjects with agency or duped victims of the ‘beauty myth.’ Pretty Modern rises from the ashes of those debates to provide us with exciting new ways of thinking about what plastic surgery is, what it means, and what it does. It is first-rate anthropology and a wonderfully perceptive study of Brazil.”—Don Kulick, author of Travesti: Sex, Gender, and Culture among Brazilian Transgendered Prostitutes

“A masterpiece. Pretty Modern is one of the most nuanced and beautifully crafted ethnographies out there.”—João Biehl, author of Will to Live: AIDS Therapies and the Politics of Survival

“Alexander Edmonds provides readers with a compelling and visceral ethnography about the ubiquitous cultural practice of plastica, or cosmetic surgery, in Rio to better understand its ubiquity across Brazil’s different social classes. . . . Pretty Modern is an important contribution to the literature on gender and the body, and will be of interest to Brazil specialists and nonspecialists alike. Although the focus is beauty, those considering race or history will also find the material useful.” (Lesley N. Braun Visual Anthropology Review)

“Fascinating. . . . The book overflows with provocative discussions. . . . [T]his study should evoke reflection and animated discussion of medicine, gender, self, culture, and modernity in multiple academic settings and beyond. Recommended. All levels/libraries.” (G. W. McDonogh Choice)

“Pretty Modern is a provocative ethnographic excursion through the labyrinth of context necessary for understanding the rise in popularity of cosmetic plastic surgery in contemporary Brazil…. I found his ethnography to be important and compelling.” (Donna Goldstein American Ethnologist)

“Pretty Modern presents a wealth of ethnographic data, weaving together thick descriptions of hospital waiting rooms, television studios, and everyday conversations, illustrated with images of advertisements and frank portraits of Edmonds’s informants.” (Ashley Mears e-misferica)

“Alex Edmonds’ book Pretty Modern is a remarkable account of cosmetic surgery—or plastic—in Brazil…. One of the huge strengths of Edmonds’ book is the detail and complexity he brings to each of the issues he analyses…. [I]t is ultimately refreshing.” (Ruth Holliday Sociology of Health and Illness )

“One of the clear advantages of Pretty Modern is the great depth of analysis that we are offered. Anecdotes and detailed descriptions provide the backdrop for theoretical discussions, fleshing out the arguments and providing the reader with a more rounded view of the issues…. Pretty Modern is a very enjoyable, provocative and stimulating read.” (Aoife McKenna Medical Sociology Online)

“Edmonds’ offers readers a provocative, richly textured, and nuanced analysis of the rise in popularity of plástica across social classes in Brazil. . . . Pretty Modern is a masterful ethnography about the medicalization of beauty.” (Hilda Lloréns Anthropological Quarterly)

“Highly readable and ranging from ethnographic, to historical, to theoretical, Pretty Modern will appeal to a broad readership.” (Susan Besse Luso-Brazilian Review)

Entertaining and Easy to Follow
By Alex
In Pretty Modern, Edmonds gives the history of plastic surgery in Brazil and talks about the cultural factors that have made Brazil the plastic surgery capital of the world. Edmonds explains that the large gaps in socioeconomic status and the fact that a middle class is virtually nonexistent has led many to seek out plastic surgery as a means to increase their capital. Edmonds argues that beauty and capital in Brazil are directly proportional. He supports this claim with several interesting examples of cosmetic procedures relating to race like the correction of the negroid nose.

Edmonds also touches on the fact that race is quite complicated in Brazil. For instance, many Brazilians describe themselves as being morena when a typical American would describe them as being black. According to Edmonds, many Brazilians identify as being morena because being black in Brazil really lowers ones chances of success. This explains why correction of the negroid nose remains a popular type of cosmetic surgery.

Edmonds presents the psychological reasons for cosmetic surgery as well. A common excuse that plastic surgeons use to perform cosmetic surgery relates to the self-esteem of the patient. Doctors argue that if a physical defect is corrected, then the patient's self esteem will increase and they will go on to live a happier life. Edmonds gives several examples of women that have had plastic surgery and support this approach to cosmetic surgery, especially women who have had plastic surgery to return their bodies to the state before childbirth.

The analysis that Edmonds presents in Pretty Modern is strong, and the examples of plastic surgery that he includes are both interesting and entertaining. The dialogue alone of Edmond's informants will keep most readers entertained. Edmond's argument is easy to follow, and I would recommend this ethnography to anyone who finds the topic of plastic surgery interesting or to anyone who just wants a fun read.

plastic surgery in Brazil
By priti
As a plastic surgeon practising in India , I had heard about the plastic surgery craze in Brazil. I was curious to know how a not so rich country like Brazil had so much demand for plastic surgery . Naturally I was glad to find this book and I did get my answers. This books is rather dull at places -but overall does justice to the subject.

Land's End: Capitalist Relations on an Indigenous Frontier, by Tania Murray Li

Drawing on two decades of ethnographic research in Sulawesi, Indonesia, Tania Murray Li offers an intimate account of the emergence of capitalist relations among indigenous highlanders who privatized their common land to plant a boom crop, cacao. Spurred by the hope of ending their poverty and isolation, some prospered, while others lost their land and struggled to sustain their families. Yet the winners and losers in this transition were not strangers—they were kin and neighbors. Li's richly peopled account takes the reader into the highlanders' world, exploring the dilemmas they faced as sharp inequalities emerged among them.

The book challenges complacent, modernization narratives promoted by development agencies that assume inefficient farmers who lose out in the shift to high-value export crops can find jobs elsewhere. Decades of uneven and often jobless growth in Indonesia meant that for newly landless highlanders, land's end was a dead end. The book also has implications for social movement activists, who seldom attend to instances where enclosure is initiated by farmers rather than coerced by the state or agribusiness corporations. Li's attention to the historical, cultural, and ecological dimensions of this conjuncture demonstrates the power of the ethnographic method and its relevance to theory and practice today.

Review
"For anyone interested in ongoing dispossession and enduring inequalities, this powerful and compelling book is essential. Tania Murray Li shows how access to land, labor, and food eroded gradually and insidiously for many people, in a manner that undermined oppositional movements." (Gillian Hart, author of Rethinking the South African Crisis: Nationalism, Populism, Hegemony 2014-03-06)

"Tania Murray Li, one of the foremost scholars of the native peoples, economies, and ecologies of Southeast Asia, here tells the subtle and challenging story of the Lauje, a group who defy cliches of indigeneity and whose destructive involvement in commodity production was willingly embraced. Her analysis complicates our understanding of rural agrarian transformation and the expansion of global capitalism, by showing how this adoption of export tree crops–unlike a century ago in Indonesia’s outer islands–is leading to a literal 'land's end.' The value and power of this volume, based on twenty years of fieldwork, lies in its telling a difficult, nuanced story of the millions who do not fit into easy, pre-existing categories and narratives of modern rural transformation."
(Michael R. Dove, editor of Beyond the Sacred Forest: Complicating Conservation in Southeast Asia 2014-03-06)

"This is a wonderful book. It may have the biggest general impact of a book centered on Southeast Asian rural social dynamics since James Scott's seminal Weapons of the Weak. With unusual clarity and great persuasiveness, Tania Murray Li explores theoretical and methodological issues through vivid depictions of people's lives." (Henry Bernstein, Professor Emeritus of Development Studies, University of London)

“Despite the depressing story that it has to tell, Land’s End is a real pleasure to read, a tour de force without a trace of bombast, a model of ethnographic writing for new generations of students and agrarian researchers to follow.” (Ben White Development and Change 2015-06-01)

“Every so often we have the privilege of reading a book that, like Tania Li’s Land’s End, radically realigns our thinking on pressing problems. Li combines a nuanced analysis of long-term ethnographic data and a straightforward, yet sophisticated, theoretical framework to prod us to reexamine an issue that is hardly unique to Indonesia: how have landless rural people been left behind in the march toward capitalist agricultural production and market expansion?" (Sarah Lyon Anthropological Quarterly 2015-06-01)

“This text adds deep and valuable ethnographic insight to existing narratives of the emergence of capitalist relations in indigenous societies. It rightfully challenges structuralist accounts of primitive accumulation using detailed ethnographic data. As such, it should be read, and likely will be, beyond the borders of development studies and anthropology." (Christopher Webb Canadian Journal of Development Studies 2015-06-11)

"Land’s End is book of delicate power, almost a laboratory account of how capital seizes hold and transforms the latticework of social relations through an almost banal process of ‘erosion’, where the bearers of capital, unrecognized, participate in the re-invention of their own ‘subject’ position. … Aided by artful ethnography, Land’s End crafts a strange yet deeply familiar world. Many sedimentary views are felled along the way, gently but firmly. Notions of indigeneity, frontier, custom, moral economy, primitive accumulation, transition, development, and citizenship, all come in for scrutiny and are left rattled.” (Vinay Gidwani Antipode 2015-07-01)

"The combination of the ethnographic longevity of her work with the theoretical sophistication of her analysis results in a provocative account of growing inequality and dynamic capitalist relations. The case studies and stories Li relates bring these elements to life, but the implications stretch far beyond the Lauje highlands." (Susan M. Darlington American Ethnologist 2016-02-01)

"Land’s End is a very fine book indeed. Tania Murray Li has written one of those studies—all too few in number—which, while empirically focused, builds an argument that will resonate with scholars working across widely differing contexts." (Jonathan Rigg Pacific Affairs 2016-06-01)

Eminently readable, surprising, and politically relevant ethnography
By dmc_runs
This is what ethnography should look like: eminently readable yet theoretically grounded, nuanced yet incisive, and both theoretically and politically relevant. Her prose is beautiful and she weaves theory seamlessly into narratives, giving something for both academic and non-academic readers to chew on. Her findings about rural farmers at the margins, for whom capitalism is not brought about with a decisive land grab or "development" scheme, but rather slowly and almost accidentally brought on by their own actions, is both surprising and informative. She challenges both the right's simplistic narrative that the market will save the poor - she demonstrates the reverse - and the left's romantic and idealized narratives about the "alternative development" paths for smallholder farmers. The book is one I'd recommend highly to anyone interested in rural development or food justice, as well as, of course, any student of the anthropology of capitalism, agrarian studies, or political ecology.

A must read
By Jackie
The book grapples with a world wide issue, of economic inequality, loss of land, and standard of living, on a local, personal scale. While the book may begin slowly, as you read further you become intrigued in the lives of the highlanders, and the nature of their check mate. It is a must for anyone trying to understand the complexities of capitalist relations, as well as those searching for an honest account of the issues surrounding development agendas.

Cities Surround The Countryside: Urban Aesthetics in Postsocialist China, by Robin Visser

Denounced as parasitical under Chairman Mao and devalued by the norms of traditional Chinese ethics, the city now functions as a site of individual and collective identity in China. Cities envelop the countryside, not only geographically and demographically but also in terms of cultural impact. Robin Visser illuminates the cultural dynamics of three decades of radical urban development in China. Interpreting fiction, cinema, visual art, architecture, and urban design, she analyzes how the aesthetics of the urban environment have shaped the emotions and behavior of people and cultures, and how individual and collective images of and practices in the city have produced urban aesthetics. By relating the built environment to culture, Visser situates postsocialist Chinese urban aesthetics within local and global economic and intellectual trends.

In the 1980s, writers, filmmakers, and artists began to probe the contradictions in China’s urbanization policies and rhetoric. Powerful neorealist fiction, cinema, documentaries, paintings, photographs, performances, and installations contrasted forms of glittering urban renewal with the government’s inattention to a livable urban infrastructure. Narratives and images depicting the melancholy urban subject came to illustrate ethical quandaries raised by urban life. Visser relates her analysis of this art to major transformations in urban planning under global neoliberalism, to the development of cultural studies in the Chinese academy, and to ways that specific cities, particularly Beijing and Shanghai, figure in the cultural imagination. Despite the environmental and cultural destruction caused by China’s neoliberal policies, Visser argues for the emergence of a new urban self-awareness, one that offers creative resolutions for the dilemmas of urbanism through new forms of intellectual engagement in society and nascent forms of civic governance.

So Much Wasted: Hunger, Performance, and the Morbidity of Resistance (Perverse Modernities: A Series Edited

In So Much Wasted, Patrick Anderson analyzes self-starvation as a significant mode of staging political arguments across the institutional domains of the clinic, the gallery, and the prison. Homing in on those who starve themselves for various reasons and the cultural and political contexts in which they do so, he examines the diagnostic history of anorexia nervosa, fasts staged by artists including Ana Mendieta and Marina Abramović, and a hunger strike initiated by Turkish prisoners. Anderson explores what it means for the clinic, the gallery, and the prison when one performs a refusal to consume as a strategy of negation or resistance, and the ways that self-starvation, as a project of refusal aimed, however unconsciously, toward death, produces violence, suffering, disappearance, and loss differently from other practices. Drawing on the work of Martin Heidegger, Sigmund Freud, Giorgio Agamben, Peggy Phelan, and others, he considers how the subject of self-starvation is refigured in relation to larger institutional and ideological drives, including those of the state. The ontological significance of performance as disappearance constitutes what Anderson calls the “politics of morbidity,” the embodied, interventional embrace of mortality and disappearance not as destructive, but rather as radically productive stagings of subject formations in which subjectivity and objecthood, presence and absence, and life and death are intertwined.

Review
“Suitable for numerous audiences—graduate courses in psychology, sociology, gender studies, and performance; scholarly audiences interested in bioethics, fatness studies, prisons, and the philosophy of selfhood; and those practitioners who work with self-starving or self-mutilating clients—this book carefully outlines a politics of resistance through dying, near-death, and ‘wasting away’. . . . Anderson has written a book worthy of attention and study. By imagining rebellion as a refusal to consume, he forges new and powerful links between gender, sexuality, the body, and the ideological apparatus of the state as it faces the many rebellions of its subjects.” - Breanne Fahs, Elevate Difference

“So Much Wasted deals with sensitive subject matters in a way that neither
trivializes nor aggrandizes them. . . . [A] stimulating and valuable contribution. . . .” - Sarah Egan, Anthropological Quarterly

“In this brilliant and important book, Patrick Anderson dramatically expands our understanding of anorexia by foregrounding its theatricality and reflexivity, and linking it to prison hunger strikes and certain kinds of endurance art. He shows us how central the self is to all of these practices, both as object and as agent. Self-starvation is often the theater of last resort, the stage on which a person performs when all others have been removed. It can also be a way of spitting out the poisonous images that one has been forced to incorporate. And even a well-balanced meal is not psychically nourishing when you are compelled to eat it, Anderson argues in the last and most compelling chapter of this book. Force-feeding does not support life; it promotes, rather, a living death.”—Kaja Silverman, author of Flesh of My Flesh

“Patrick Anderson has written a wonderful book, one that will have a real impact on the field of performance studies. The topic that he has chosen is important and timely: the forced feeding of prisoners on a hunger strike at Guantánamo, the anorexia epidemic among young women (and now men), and the removal of Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube are only some of the most recent and urgent questions that have surfaced around the practice and politics of starvation and who, ultimately, has the power over the individual body.”—Diana Taylor, author of The Archive and the Repertoire: Performing Cultural Memory in the Americas

Invited to Israel to give the keynote address at an LGBT studies conference at Tel Aviv University, Schulman declines, joining other artists and academics honoring the Palestinian call for an academic and cultural boycott of Israel. Anti-occupation activists in the United States, Canada, Israel, and Palestine come together to help organize an alternative solidarity visit for the American activist. Schulman takes us to an anarchist, vegan café in Tel Aviv, where she meets anti-occupation queer Israelis, and through border checkpoints into the West Bank, where queer Palestinian activists welcome her into their spaces for conversations that will change the course of her life. She describes the dusty roads through the West Bank, where Palestinians are cut off from water and subjected to endless restrictions while Israeli settler neighborhoods have full freedoms and resources.

As Schulman learns more, she questions the contradiction between Israel's investment in presenting itself as gay friendly—financially sponsoring gay film festivals and parades—and its denial of the rights of Palestinians. At the same time, she talks with straight Palestinian activists about their position in relation to homosexuality and gay rights in Palestine and internationally. Back in the United States, Schulman draws on her extensive activist experience to organize a speaking tour for some of the Palestinian queer leaders whom she had met and trusted. Dubbed "Al-Tour," it takes the activists to LGBT community centers, conferences, and universities throughout the United States. Its success solidifies her commitment to working to end Israel's occupation of Palestine, and it kindles her larger hope that a new "queer international" will emerge and join other movements demanding human rights across the globe.

The Proletarian Gamble: Korean Workers in Interwar Japan (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society), by Ken C. Kawashima

Koreans constituted the largest colonial labor force in imperial Japan during the 1920s and 1930s. Caught between the Scylla of agricultural destitution in Korea and the Charybdis of industrial depression in Japan, migrant Korean peasants arrived on Japanese soil amid extreme instability in the labor and housing markets. In The Proletarian Gamble, Ken C. Kawashima maintains that contingent labor is a defining characteristic of capitalist commodity economies. He scrutinizes how the labor power of Korean workers in Japan was commodified, and how these workers both fought against the racist and contingent conditions of exchange and combated institutionalized racism.

Kawashima draws on previously unseen archival materials from interwar Japan as he describes how Korean migrants struggled against various recruitment practices, unfair and discriminatory wages, sudden firings, racist housing practices, and excessive bureaucratic red tape. Demonstrating that there was no single Korean “minority,” he reveals how Koreans exploited fellow Koreans and how the stratification of their communities worked to the advantage of state and capital. However, Kawashima also describes how, when migrant workers did organize—as when they became involved in Rōsō (the largest Korean communist labor union in Japan) and in Zenkyō (the Japanese communist labor union)—their diverse struggles were united toward a common goal. In The Proletarian Gamble, his analysis of the Korean migrant workers' experiences opens into a much broader rethinking of the fundamental nature of capitalist commodity economies and the analytical categories of the proletariat, surplus populations, commodification, and state power.

The Problem of the Future World: W. E. B. Du Bois and the Race Concept at Midcentury, by Eric Porter

The Problem of the Future World is a compelling reassessment of the later writings of the iconic African American activist and intellectual W. E. B. Du Bois. As Eric Porter points out, despite the outpouring of scholarship devoted to Du Bois, the broad range of writing he produced during the 1940s and early 1950s has not been thoroughly examined in its historical context, nor has sufficient attention been paid to the theoretical interventions he made during those years. Porter locates Du Bois’s later work in relation to what he calls “the first postracial moment.” He suggests that Du Bois’s midcentury writings are so distinctive and so relevant for contemporary scholarship because they were attuned to the shape-shifting character of modern racism, and in particular to the ways that discredited racial taxonomies remained embedded and in force in existing political-economic arrangements at both the local and global levels. Porter moves the conversation about Du Bois and race forward by building on existing work about the theorist, systematically examining his later writings, and looking at them from new perspectives, partly by drawing on recent scholarship on race, neoliberalism, and empire. The Problem of the Future World shows how Du Bois’s later writings help to address race and racism as protean, global phenomena in the present.

Review
“Covering such issues as WW II, Pan-Africanism, and feminism, Porter is successful in explaining the broad import of Du Bois’s later work. Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.” - Y. Kiuchi, Choice

“Eric Porter is highly aware that today the late Du Bois is neither deeply studied nor particularly well regarded. He agrees that the great man’s later work suffered from ‘political dogmatism’ in comparison to his vast earlier contributions (Porter, p. 155). Still, drawing on a wide reading of recent literature on Du Bois as well as on race and racism in the contemporary world, Porter argues that ‘the Doctor’s’ late work nevertheless has something to teach us today.” - Howard Winant, Ethnic and Racial Studies

“DuBois was an international figure, and Porter’s study reminds us of his importance during his lifetime as well as his continued relevance in how we currently view concepts of race, class, and citizenship. For DuBois scholars in particular, ... Porter’s ... intriguing text[ is] recommended.” - Tara T. Green, American Literature

“Porter’s The Problem of the Future World is a timely treatment of the lessons we can learn from Du Bois’s texts on critically gauging the past and present to bring about a democratic present and future. . . . Porter’s book is a must read for scholars and graduate students in the fields of African American studies, Africana studies, and American studies.“ - Shannon King, History: Reviews of New Books

“The Problem of the Future World is in every respect a superior work of scholarship. It is a major contribution to the field of Du Bois studies, where sustained, careful examinations of the theorist’s later writings are especially lacking; to midcentury U.S. intellectual history; and to contemporary theories and criticism of U.S. racial formations.”—Nikhil Pal Singh, author of Black Is a Country: Race and the Unfinished Struggle for Democracy

“As the title of Eric Porter’s excellent intellectual biography warns us, the problem of the future world may have been anticipated by the severe racial and economic judgments of W. E. B. Du Bois, one of the last century’s greatest engaged thinkers.”—David Levering Lewis, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of W. E. B. Du Bois: Biography of a Race, 1868–1919
