Cinema of Actuality: Japanese Avant-Garde Filmmaking in the Season of Image Politics (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society), by Yu

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Japanese avant-garde filmmakers intensely explored the shifting role of the image in political activism and media events. Known as the "season of politics," the era was filled with widely covered dramatic events from hijackings and hostage crises to student protests. This season of politics was, Yuriko Furuhata argues, the season of image politics. Well-known directors, including Oshima Nagisa, Matsumoto Toshio, Wakamatsu Kōji, and Adachi Masao, appropriated the sensationalized media coverage of current events, turning news stories into material for timely critique and intermedial experimentation. Cinema of Actuality analyzes Japanese avant-garde filmmakers' struggle to radicalize cinema in light of the intensifying politics of spectacle and a rapidly changing media environment, one that was increasingly dominated by television. Furuhata demonstrates how avant-garde filmmaking intersected with media history, and how sophisticated debates about film theory emerged out of dialogues with photography, television, and other visual arts.

Review
"Cinema of Actuality demonstrates that—despite the copious scholarship on Japanese films of the 1960s and 1970s—we know less about this period than we think. Yuriko Furuhata provides crucial new insights, deftly placing the films in the context of the era's media mix, while introducing us to the theoretical writings underpinning the filmmakers' creative practices. The result is a vital contribution to the history of film theory."—Abé Mark Nornes, author of Forest of Pressure: Ogawa Shinsuke and Postwar Japanese Documentary

"Cinema of Actuality is a tour de force, a potentially field-changing intervention in Japanese film studies, TV and media theory, and the study of postwar world film culture. Yuriko Furuhata shows that during the 1960s and 1970s, major political events and their portrayal in the media formed the basis for an entire Japanese cinema. At the same time, she poses vital questions about media theory and representation more broadly. This is a singularly important work."—Akira Mizuta Lippit, author of Ex-Cinema: From a Theory of Experimental Film and Video

"At last there's a book that reads the Japanese cinema of the 1960s and 1970s in a cross-media context and with a rigorous historical and theoretical eye. Elegantly and precisely argued, this is a book that is both exemplary and surprising. From manga to militant cinema, from landscape theory to pink film, Yuriko Furuhata gives readers the discursive and political history that allows a new understanding of the Japanese film and media of this era."—Miryam Sas, author of Experimental Arts in Postwar Japan: Moments of Encounter, Engagement, and Imagined Return

"Artists often make great sociological commentators, and Furuhata’s book sheds new light on the insights of these filmmakers.... [a] compelling and necessary addition to cinema scholarship." (Lyle Sylvander JQ Magazine)

“Studies that grapple with the complexities of cross-cultural analysis are few… the author is well qualified to achieve an excellent addition to the literature.” (Mike Leggett Leonardo)

“[A] remarkably researched and argued case for Japan's complex theoretical contributions to the field of cinema studies…. The totality of Furuhata's work is a benchmark of attained, wide-reaching scope that any serious academic work should ascribe to achieve.” (Clayton Dillard Slant Magazine)

“Furuhata convincingly sketches the intellectual and social environment that gave birth to some of Japan’s most distinctive films.” (Alexander Jacoby Times Literary Supplement)

"Adds significant depth, nuance and context to a topic that has, for good reason, long captivated an audience of cinephiles, activists and researchers." (Steven Ridgely Pacific Affairs)

"Furuhata … brilliantly analyses a radical movement whose effects can be traced in contemporary film, anime, manga, and television representations. Cinema of actuality sets a new standard of scholarly excellence in Japanese film studies and is a book to go on all our reading lists." (Dolores P. Martinez Anthro Forum 2015-11-01)

“Cinema of Actuality highlights the many ways the cinematic avant-garde was deeply concerned with the rise of the broadcast political spectacle. This attention to the contemporaneous gives the book itself a strong feeling of ‘actuality,’ and the richly detailed contexts it offers will have a profound impact on our understanding of this ‘season of image politics.’” (Paul Roquet Japan Forum)

"Fascination with actuality is alive and well, in social media and on the streets, where we find old vanguards among the fresh faces of counter-politics. Although the media platforms have changed, this continuity suggests that the reach of Furuhata’s insightful analysis in this book may be far greater than the period it covers." (Mariko Shigeta Schimmel Monumenta Nipponica 2015-12-01)

How did the Depression-era folk-song collector Alan Lomax end up with a songwriting credit on Jay-Z’s song “Takeover”? Why doesn’t Clyde Stubblefield, the primary drummer on James Brown recordings from the late 1960s such as “Funky Drummer” and “Cold Sweat,” get paid for other musicians’ frequent use of the beats he performed on those songs? The music industry’s approach to digital sampling—the act of incorporating snippets of existing recordings into new ones—holds the answers. Exploring the complexities and contradictions in how samples are licensed, Kembrew McLeod and Peter DiCola interviewed more than 100 musicians, managers, lawyers, industry professionals, journalists, and scholars. Based on those interviews, Creative License puts digital sampling into historical, cultural, and legal context. It describes hip-hop during its sample-heavy golden age in the 1980s and early 1990s, the lawsuits that shaped U.S. copyright law on sampling, and the labyrinthine licensing process that musicians must now navigate. The authors argue that the current system for licensing samples is inefficient and limits creativity. For instance, by estimating the present-day licensing fees for the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique (1989) and Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet (1990), two albums from hip-hop’s golden age, the authors show that neither album could be released commercially today. Observing that the same dynamics that create problems for remixers now reverberate throughout all culture industries, the authors conclude by examining ideas for reform.

Interviewees include David Byrne, Cee Lo Green, George Clinton, De La Soul, DJ Premier, DJ Qbert, Eclectic Method, El-P, Girl Talk, Matmos, Mix Master Mike, Negativland, Public Enemy, RZA, Clyde Stubblefield, T.S. Monk.

Empire in Question: Reading, Writing, and Teaching British Imperialism, by Antoinette Burton

Featuring essays written by the influential historian Antoinette Burton since the mid-1990s, Empire in Question traces the development of a particular, contentious strand of modern British history, the “new imperial history,” through the eyes of a scholar who helped to shape the field. In her teaching and writing, Burton has insisted that the vectors of imperial power run in multiple directions, argued that race must be incorporated into history writing, and emphasized that gender and sexuality are critical dimensions of imperial history. Empire in Question includes Burton’s groundbreaking critiques of British historiography, as well as essays in which she brings theory to bear on topics from Jane Eyre to nostalgia for colonial India. Burton’s autobiographical introduction describes how her early encounters with feminist and postcolonial critique led to her convictions that we must ask who counts as a subject of imperial history, and that we should maintain a healthy skepticism regarding the claims to objectivity that shape much modern history writing. In the coda, she candidly reflects on shortcomings in her own thinking and in the new imperial history, and she argues that British history must be repositioned in relation to world history. Much of Burton’s writing emerged from her teaching; Empire in Question is meant to engage students and teachers in debates about how to think about British imperialism in light of contemporary events.

Review
“Antoinette Burton’s body of work is central to the debates over national, imperial, and postcolonial histories. Empire in Question is a most welcome collection of her essays, and required reading for anyone in this field. It contains classics, less well-known pieces, and new work. Characteristically, it is full of questions and challenges, both to herself and to her readers. We see a critical and imaginative historian at work, fully engaged both with the times in which she lives, and the times she evokes for us in the past.”—Catherine Hall, Professor of Modern British Social and Cultural History, University College London

“No one has done more than Antoinette Burton to challenge the autonomies of national history, indeed the very ‘certainty of the nation as an analytical category’ itself. Inspired both by the archive’s possibilities and the promise of feminist and postcolonial critique, she turns the ever-seductive sufficiencies of British history radically inside out. While brilliantly showing how and why the histories of nation and empire have to be written together, Empire in Question also documents the continuing transformations of the discipline of history since the 1980s, speaking eloquently to specialists across many different fields.”—Geoff Eley, author of A Crooked Line: From Cultural History to the History of Society

“Antoinette Burton’s collection of articles in the book, Empire in Question show her theoretical acumen and serve as theoretical harbinger for future aspiring imperial historians.... This book is a treasure trove of information on imperial history and a necessary text for aspiring imperial historians, graduate students, and for those nostalgic for the Empire. It can only be hoped that such rethinking and researching of this nature would happen in the other areas of history of India as well.” (Lavanya Vemsani Itinerario)

“Antoinette Burton’s interrogation of empire has made reading, writing and teaching British imperialism a more stimulating and rewarding enterprise.” (Gavin Rand Journal of Victorian Culture Online)

“Burton's new book should be read by everyone interested in the history of the British Empire over the last two centuries. Burton has been a leader, as Bayly comments in his afterword, in destabilizing the Whiggish, white man's model of imperial history. Her book importantly challenges the ways in which historians and the publics they influence continue to think about imperialism (both British and American) as well as about globalization, race, gender, and the practice and teaching of history.” (Patrick Brantlinger Review 19)

“[A]n important retrospective of new imperial history’s development into a vital approach to British historical studies…. Brought together as it is in this volume, Burton’s work demonstrates the challenges, but more so the vital importance, of continuing to push ourselves and British studies past these historiographical barriers to a fuller view of the multiplicity of peoples and places that shape historical and contemporary global systems.” (Nicole M. Mares Journal of World History)

“The development of the ‘new imperial history’ is considered in this book by a scholar who helped to shape the field. Antoinette Burton has insisted that the vectors of imperial power run in many directions and that race must be incorporated into history writing, and argued that gender and sexuality are critical dimensions of imperial history. This collection of essays includes her groundbreaking critiques of British historiography, as well as essays in which she views topics from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre to nostalgia for colonial India through the lens of theory, and a coda in which she candidly assesses shortcomings in her own thinking.” (Times Higher Education)

“This is history with politics and scholarship bound up together, where anything can become the material of the historian if viewed with a discerning eye, where the present and the past are constantly in dialogue, constantly up for question.” (Yasmin Khan History Workshop Journal)

“Empire in Question demonstrates the vitality of cultural studies in capturing the relational dynamics of gender and race and their entwined framing of the lived spaces of imperial rule.” (Manu Goswami Journal of Modern History)

Habeas Viscus: Racializing Assemblages, Biopolitics, and Black Feminist Theories of the Human, by Alexander G. Weheliye

Habeas Viscus focuses attention on the centrality of race to notions of the human. Alexander G. Weheliye develops a theory of "racializing assemblages," taking race as a set of sociopolitical processes that discipline humanity into full humans, not-quite-humans, and nonhumans. This disciplining, while not biological per se, frequently depends on anchoring political hierarchies in human flesh. The work of the black feminist scholars Hortense Spillers and Sylvia Wynter is vital to Weheliye's argument. Particularly significant are their contributions to the intellectual project of black studies vis-à-vis racialization and the category of the human in western modernity. Wynter and Spillers configure black studies as an endeavor to disrupt the governing conception of humanity as synonymous with white, western man. Weheliye posits black feminist theories of modern humanity as useful correctives to the "bare life and biopolitics discourse" exemplified by the works of Giorgio Agamben and Michel Foucault, which, Weheliye contends, vastly underestimate the conceptual and political significance of race in constructions of the human. Habeas Viscus reveals the pressing need to make the insights of black studies and black feminism foundational to the study of modern humanity.

Review
"Habeas Viscus is a major contribution to the discourses of race and modern politics. Alexander G. Weheliye intervenes in contemporary engagement with Agamben's and Foucault's scholarship on biopolitics by opening new lines of inquiry for thinking through the problem of the human. Weheliye turns to the work of two major scholars and theorists of black studies, Hortense Spillers and Sylvia Wynter, revealing their thinking about the material and discursive existence of black bodies as vital analytical rubrics for conceptualizing the human." (Wahneema Lubiano, editor of The House that Race Built: Black Americans, U.S. Terrain)

"Alexander Weheliye's Habeas Viscus is the latest iteration in the current reinvigoration of black diasporic thought.... Habeas Viscus feeds into this furiously complex joyful noise." (Dhanveer Singh Brar New Formations)

“It is a book that offers us a meditation for imagining a world where the categorization and organization that produces race, and racialist distinction and hierarchy — where human life — might be organized otherwise than it is.” (Ashon Crawley Los Angeles Review of Books)

“Habeas Viscus is a work with vast implications for the rereading of canonical works of biopolitics, as well as the reframing of biopolitics from the ‘other’ side. The arguments and techniques provided in the book will not only be of interest to scholars of race, feminism, and biopolitics, but also to those engaged with disability studies, affect theory, and even animal/ity studies. For this last group in particular, Habeas Viscus will be a haunting incantation for reconsidering the meanings and boundaries of human and nonhuman life, where ‘flesh’ is proved liminal, belonging neither to the realm of Man nor beast.” (Megan H. Glick Hypatia)

“Weheliye’s dual theoretical-political aim of clarifying the operating force of racializing assemblages as well as voicing the necessity and potentiality of alternate political futures is an urgently needed intervention in conversations about the human and humanity. Not satisfied with critiquing the perils of our contemporary condition, he orients us towards new futures. In doing so, Weheliye’s Habeus Viscus offers intellectual victuals not only for the project of black studies, but for all those who study non-white being-in-the-world and are relegated to the conceptual ghetto of ethnographic specificity.” (Aditi Surie von Czechowski Borderlines (CSSAAME blog) 2015-07-29)

“Habeas Viscus is a long-awaited contribution in the slowly awakening critical debates on the place of the concepts of race and racialization within the discourses on biopolitics and bare life underpinning many scholarly debates concerned with political violence, neoliberal capitalism and converging systems of oppression in Western critical theory. More importantly, coming from the standpoint of black studiesand drawing largely from black feminist thought, this critical account of poststructuralist take on the category of the human, promises not only to redraw the blueprints of this prominent theoretical formation, but also to deterritorialise minority discourses, so far relegated to academic peripheries.”  (Marianna Szczygielska Parallax 2015-11-01)

"In the age of the Anthropocene, Habeas Viscus helps us hear, feel, and imagine humanities that persist beyond Man’s catastrophic horizons." (Annie Menzel Theory & Event 2016-01-01)

Habeas Viscus takes western-white-European philosophers like Agamben, Foucault
By Eric
I'll provide a slight variation on of a previous review:

Habeas Viscus takes western-white-European philosophers like Agamben, Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, etc, and makes them relevant, period. Because these philosophers have presume a subject who is fully-human (aka white, aka Western, whatever), they fail to understand the sociopolitical order as it is, they fail to problematize the "genres of the Human", as Sylvia Wynter puts it. By putting these poststructuralist philosophers in conversation with various black thinkers and thinkers of color - Weheliye draws on the work of Hortense Spillers and Sylvia Wynters primarily, but they're not alone - Weheliye takes the abstract, narrow, identitarian philosophers, and brings them back into the fleshy world of humans. Weheliye's interrogating the question of the Human is brilliant, and while he does not have all the answers (he doesn't pretend to), this is certainly a book that prompts discussion and further inquiries, which was his goal.

Well done, Weheliye. This book ought to be engaged with widely, by anyone who is interested in philosophy, politics, racism, or humans.

Displaced Allegories: Post-Revolutionary Iranian Cinema, by Negar Mottahedeh

Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran’s film industry, in conforming to the Islamic Republic’s system of modesty, had to ensure that women on-screen were veiled from the view of men. This prevented Iranian filmmakers from making use of the desiring gaze, a staple cinematic system of looking. In Displaced Allegories Negar Mottahedeh shows that post-Revolutionary Iranian filmmakers were forced to create a new visual language for conveying meaning to audiences. She argues that the Iranian film industry found creative ground not in the negation of government regulations but in the camera’s adoption of the modest, averted gaze. In the process, the filmic techniques and cinematic technologies were gendered as feminine and the national cinema was produced as a woman’s cinema.

Mottahedeh asserts that, in response to the prohibitions against the desiring look, a new narrative cinema emerged as the displaced allegory of the constraints on the post-Revolutionary Iranian film industry. Allegorical commentary was not developed in the explicit content of cinematic narratives but through formal innovations. Offering close readings of the work of the nationally popular and internationally renowned Iranian auteurs Bahram Bayza’i, Abbas Kiarostami, and Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Mottahedeh illuminates the formal codes and conventions of post-Revolutionary Iranian films. She insists that such analyses of cinema’s visual codes and conventions are crucial to the study of international film. As Mottahedeh points out, the discipline of film studies has traditionally seen film as a medium that communicates globally because of its dependence on a (Hollywood) visual language assumed to be universal and legible across national boundaries. Displaced Allegories demonstrates that visual language is not necessarily universal; it is sometimes deeply informed by national culture and politics.

German Colonialism in a Global Age (Politics, History, and Culture)From Duke University Press Books

This collection provides a comprehensive treatment of the German colonial empire and its significance. Leading scholars show not only how the colonies influenced metropolitan life and the character of German politics during the Bismarckian and Wilhelmine eras (1871–1918), but also how colonial mentalities and practices shaped later histories during the Nazi era. In introductory essays, editors Geoff Eley and Bradley Naranch survey the historiography and broad developments in the imperial imaginary of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contributors then examine a range of topics, from science and the colonial state to the disciplinary constructions of Africans as colonial subjects for German administrative control. They consider the influence of imperialism on German society and culture via the mass-marketing of imperial imagery; conceptions of racial superiority in German pedagogy; and the influence of colonialism on German anti-Semitism. The collection concludes with several essays that address geopolitics and the broader impact of the German imperial experience.

Review
"This landmark collection showcases the latest research in many areas of German colonialism. As a state-of-the-art expression of a vibrant field, German Colonialism in a Global Age will set a new benchmark and become a standard reference." (A. Dirk Moses, author of German Intellectuals and the Nazi Past 2014-03-12)

"The volume offers both sophisticated historiographical reflection and rich empirical contributions. It is the best single volume on German colonialism."
(Lora Wildenthal, author of German Women for Empire, 1884–1945)

"German Colonialism in a Global Age is a solid contribution to the study of German imperialism. It expands the study of Germany’s colonialist past beyond earlier scholarship. However, its greatest contribution is to provide the wider community of scholars a window (or perhaps more accurately, a number of windows) into current research into the nature of German colonialism as part of the larger European colonial venture."  (Theodore Nitz H-Diplo, H-Net Reviews 2015-07-01)

C. L. R. James in Imperial Britain (The C. L. R. James Archives), by Christian Høgsbjerg

C. L. R. James in Imperial Britain chronicles the life and work of the Trinidadian intellectual and writer C. L. R. James during his first extended stay in Britain, from 1932 to 1938. It reveals the radicalizing effect of this critical period on James's intellectual and political trajectory. During this time, James turned from liberal humanism to revolutionary socialism. Rejecting the "imperial Britishness" he had absorbed growing up in a crown colony in the British West Indies, he became a leading anticolonial activist and Pan-Africanist thinker. Christian Høgsbjerg reconstructs the circumstances and milieus in which James wrote works including his magisterial study The Black Jacobins. First published in 1938, James's examination of the dynamics of anticolonial revolution in Haiti continues to influence scholarship on Atlantic slavery and abolition. Høgsbjerg contends that during the Depression C. L. R. James advanced public understanding of the African diaspora and emerged as one of the most significant and creative revolutionary Marxists in Britain.

Review
"Christian Høgsbjerg's book is going to make a very significant impact on the community of C. L. R. James scholars and beyond. Høgsbjerg has thoroughly combed the key archival sources to generate a comprehensive, lively, and insightful portrait of James's intellectual and political life during his first sojourn in Britain. In doing so, he has filled in many key details and fleshed out many important events in James's life in Britain." (Paget Henry, coeditor of C. L. R. James's Carribbean)

"When C. L. R. James left Trinidad for England in 1932, it was a kind of homecoming: A connoisseur of cricket, immersed in the works of Shakespeare and Thackeray almost from birth, James was the consummate Afro-Saxon intellectual long before setting foot in London. In C. L. R. James in Imperial Britain, Christian Høgsbjerg follows him into the meeting halls and radical bookstores, the cricket grounds and bohemian haunts, where this displaced 'Victorian with the rebel seed' emerged as a leading figure in the Trotskyist and Pan-Africanist movements. The fusion of insight with command of factual detail sets the new standard by which serious work on C. L. R. James must be judged." (Scott McLemee, editor of C. L. R. James on the "Negro Question")

"Høgsbjerg has produced an invaluable addition to both British and Caribbean labour scholarship and has written it in such an accessible way that its stirring and provocative narrative ought to inspire thought and action." (Chris Searle Morning Star 2014-05-26)

"This impressively researched, well-written and accessible book demonstrates that James's time in Britain was a period of fertile intellectual growth for this inspirational writer and activist." (Brian Richardson Socialist Review 2014-06-01)

"Christian Høgsbjerg’s C.L.R. James in Imperial Britain sets a new standard in James Studies for he has combed key archival sources bringing increased insight and factual detail to considerations of his life and work. . . . We find Christian Høgsbjerg’s C.L.R. James in his study literally on fire, not merely researching revolutionary history and writing cricket columns. With his sweater accidentally aflame from the heater in his small room, smoke fills the home where he is a guest but he doesn’t notice. Someone has to tell him: 'Nello you are on fire.' James doesn’t understand at first, and then anxiously replies: 'Oh my goodness, oh my goodness!' This is an apt tale to advertise the vibrant quality of C.L.R. James in Imperial Britain." (Matthew Quest Insurgent Notes 2014-05-30)

"More than any other contemporary writer on James, Christian Høgsbjerg appreciates how provisional and incomplete our understanding of this intellectual agenda has actually been. . . . Anyone with an interest in black protest, literary London, and/or left politics in the 1930s will enjoy this smart, factually grounded yet thematically rich biographical study."  (Kent Worcester New Politics)

"Høgsbjerg does a masterful job of recounting this history in tremendous detail. James himself is now an increasingly well-known figure, particularly in the fields of literary and postcolonial studies. Yet, as Høgsbjerg argues, the details of his life, particularly his political transformations and commitments, have preoccupied recent scholars rather less, and often to the detriment of their scholarship. It seems remarkable, indeed, that Høgsbjerg’s is the first detailed study of James’s years in Britain. . . ." (Daniel Whittall Antipode)

“Høgsbjerg’s biography is an essential piece of the history of C.L.R. James. It is first and foremost an intellectual history which demonstrates how both theory and politics form and are formulated over years. And it provides proof that the revolution will not come without sustained intellectual engagement.” (Yasmin Nair Monthly Review)

“This is an exceptional study and a necessary book for anyone concerned with understanding James’ life and work, or interested in the wider history of black radical and socialist politics in the twentieth century. As Høgsbjerg rightly concludes, James’ life and work remains, in many respects, an important resource of hope and inspiration for contemporary readers.” (Andrew Smith Race and Class)

“There is a great deal to commend in this book — to both the expert and those newly introduced to James and his work. Thankfully, Høgsbjerg takes us from James’s classrooms in Trinidad to pub-crawls in London, and ultimately, to a world of exceedingly rich political activism and thought that often defies easy categorization. … For those looking to grasp today’s interconnected travails of racial, class, and cultural alienation brought about by the shortcomings of global capitalism and hyper-nationalism, they would do well to add Høgsbjerg’s delightful and poignant history to their shelves.” (Saladin Ambar Canadian Journal of History 2015-09-01)

"When James left Britain for the United States in 1938 he had moved from Victorian elitism to revolutionary socialism. This book expertly charts his development. It will not only be of value to C L R James scholars but to anyone who has an interest in British history." (Rhys Williams International Socialism 2016-04-04)

Governing Indigenous Territories: Enacting Sovereignty in the Ecuadorian Amazon, by Juliet S. Erazo

Governing Indigenous Territories illuminates a paradox of modern indigenous lives. In recent decades, native peoples from Alaska to Cameroon have sought and gained legal title to significant areas of land, not as individuals or families but as large, collective organizations. Obtaining these collective titles represents an enormous accomplishment; it also creates dramatic changes. Once an indigenous territory is legally established, other governments and organizations expect it to act as a unified political entity, making decisions on behalf of its population and managing those living within its borders. A territorial government must mediate between outsiders and a not-always-united population within a context of constantly shifting global development priorities. The people of Rukullakta, a large indigenous territory in Ecuador, have struggled to enact sovereignty since the late 1960s. Drawing broadly applicable lessons from their experiences of self-rule, Juliet S. Erazo shows how collective titling produces new expectations, obligations, and subjectivities within indigenous territories.

Review
"Governing Indigenous Territories is a beautiful ethnography, a compelling contribution to contemporary debates about sovereignty in Latin America. The story that Juliet S. Erazo tells is about not just Ecuador or Latin America but larger political, economic, social, and ecological histories, practices, and ideologies. This is contemporary ethnography at its best."—Paige West, author of From Modern Production to Imagined Primitive: The Social World of Coffee from Papua New Guinea

"Governing Indigenous Territories is a superb work. Through rich ethnographic descriptions, Juliet S. Erazo breaks through essentialized notions of Amazonian Indigenous communities, capturing the dynamic, complex, changing nature of human experience. At the same time, she tells a global story of territoriality and resource use, a story involving local and federal governments, social movements, and nongovernmental organizations. This landmark book will appeal broadly across disciplines and provide a basis for future research."—Marc Becker, author of Indians and Leftists in the Making of Ecuador's Modern Indigenous Movements

"Governing Indigenous Territories is an exceptional case study of the complicated issues surrounding concepts of 'indigenous territory,' 'indigenous sovereignty,' and 'territorial citizenship.' It is a sharp, insightful analysis of the extraordinary obligations that modern nation-states often place on indigenous residents who wish to maintain what was previously theirs."—Jean E. Jackson, coeditor of Indigenous Movements, Self-Representation, and the State in Latin America

“Juliet Erazo’s Governing Indigenous Territories is a thoughtful ethnography of indigenous politics and ‘territorial citizenship’ in the space of Rukullakta… Ultimately, the case study that this book encompasses is an excellent lens for understanding the political space of encounters between Amazonian Kichwa and the Ecuadorian state and non-state actors….” (Veronica Davidov European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies)

“This clear, well-organized book traces the 40-year ethnographic history of a self-governing autonomous region, Rukullakta Territory, in lowland Ecuador, providing a well-documented case study of how a community emerges…. Recommended.” (D. B. Heath Choice)

[A]n important book that should have wide appeal among geographers.” (Karl Offen Journal of Latin American Geography)

"An insightful study of indigenous sovereignty enactment in the Ecuadorian Amazon as an exercise of continuous cultural and societal negotiation."  (Ileana Baeza Lope AmeriQuests)

"Governing Indigenous Territories effectively reminds us of the ambiguities of identity categories and explores how people mobilize identity to push the limits of and remake the categories through which life is governed. Erazo’s narrative is attentive to how these flexibilities are part and parcel of how Rukullacta evolved as a territorial entity—what she calls 'everyday forms of territorial formation.' " (Gabriela Valdivia American Anthropologist 2015-09-01)

"Governing Indigenous Territories is a significant contribution to the literature on Ecuadoran and Latin American indigenous politics. It is well-suited for teaching, and will be appreciated by specialists." (Bret Gustafson Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology 2016-03-23)

Well written, well researched
By Geza
I enjoyed learning about a very special part of the world. It seems that the peoples living in the upper Amazon area can govern themselves far more effectively than the US as I read this book during the shutdown of the US government thanks to Congressional obduracy.

A Xicana Codex of Changing Consciousness: Writings, 2000–2010, by Cherríe L. Moraga

A Xicana Codex of Changing Consciousness features essays and poems by Cherríe L. Moraga, one of the most influential figures in Chicana/o, feminist, queer, and indigenous activism and scholarship. Combining moving personal stories with trenchant political and cultural critique, the writer, activist, teacher, dramatist, mother, daughter, comadre, and lesbian lover looks back on the first ten years of the twenty-first century. She considers decade-defining public events such as 9/11 and the campaign and election of Barack Obama, and she explores socioeconomic, cultural, and political phenomena closer to home, sharing her fears about raising her son amid increasing urban violence and the many forms of dehumanization faced by young men of color. Moraga describes her deepening grief as she loses her mother to Alzheimer’s; pays poignant tribute to friends who passed away, including the sculptor Marsha Gómez and the poets Alfred Arteaga, Pat Parker, and Audre Lorde; and offers a heartfelt essay about her personal and political relationship with Gloria Anzaldúa.

Thirty years after the publication of Anzaldúa and Moraga’s collection This Bridge Called My Back, a landmark of women-of-color feminism, Moraga’s literary and political praxis remains motivated by and intertwined with indigenous spirituality and her identity as Chicana lesbian. Yet aspects of her thinking have changed over time. A Xicana Codex of Changing Consciousness reveals key transformations in Moraga’s thought; the breadth, rigor, and philosophical depth of her work; her views on contemporary debates about citizenship, immigration, and gay marriage; and her deepening involvement in transnational feminist and indigenous activism. It is a major statement from one of our most important public intellectuals.
