A daughter of the poets Hettie Jones and Amiri Baraka, Kellie Jones grew up immersed in a world of artists, musicians, and writers in Manhattan’s East Village and absorbed in black nationalist ideas about art, politics, and social justice across the river in Newark. The activist vision of art and culture that she learned in those two communities, and especially from her family, has shaped her life and work as an art critic and curator. Featuring selections of her writings from the past twenty years, EyeMinded reveals Jones’s role in bringing attention to the work of African American, African, Latin American, and women artists who have challenged established art practices. Interviews that she conducted with the painter Howardena Pindell, the installation and performance artist David Hammons, and the Cuban sculptor Kcho appear along with pieces on the photographers Dawoud Bey, Lorna Simpson, and Pat Ward Williams; the sculptor Martin Puryear; the assemblage artist Betye Saar; and the painters Jean-Michel Basquiat, Norman Lewis, and Al Loving. Reflecting Jones’s curatorial sensibility, this collection is structured as a dialogue between her writings and works by her parents, her sister Lisa Jones, and her husband Guthrie P. Ramsey Jr. EyeMinded offers a glimpse into the family conversation that has shaped and sustained Jones, insight into the development of her critical and curatorial vision, and a survey of some of the most important figures in contemporary art.

Review
“EyeMinded is an impressive collection of essays by Kellie Jones, a much sought after scholar, prolific writer, and extraordinary curator whose works I have admired for many years. She began her career in the mid-1980s, uncovering and recovering African and African American artists by organizing exhibitions, writing essays, and lecturing on some of the then lesser-known artists. I believe that she was instrumental in introducing to a larger and contemporary public the works of black artists of the African diaspora, including some of the most noted artists working today.”—Deborah Willis, author of Posing Beauty: African American Images from the 1890s to the Present

“Kellie Jones, supported by a remarkable family of artists and intellectuals, has provided a plethora of razor-sharp insights and creative testimonials to the greater arts and scholarly communities for years. As this important book makes amber clear, Professor Jones’ astute observations and in-depth analyses of African American art are invaluable resources to contemporary studies and, arguably, equivalent to the notable essays of art history’s earlier, admired critics and chroniclers.”—Richard J. Powell, author of Cutting a Figure: Fashioning Black Portraiture

“This extraordinary collection reveals Kellie Jones as a discerning architect of the multicultural art landscape of the last few decades. Informed by her keen eye and incisive intellect, Jones’s definitive takes on artists, including Lorna Simpson, Martin Puryear, and David Hammons, make this book a must-read for anyone interested in American art from the 1980s forward. And then, on top of Jones’s own shimmering intellectual accomplishment in these pages, EyeMinded is something else as well: a conversation between an American family of arts and letters as illustrious as the Lowells or the Jameses. This book will stand apart for that reason alone, for few American families have contributed so richly to the arts, letters, and sounds of their generations as the Joneses. Here comes Dr. Kellie Jones, ‘eye-minded,’ and she’s bringing her people with her.”—Elizabeth Alexander, Yale University

“EyeMinded is compelling testimony to the ways in which Kellie Jones was able to both contribute to, and comment on, the astonishing quantum shifts in art and curatorial practices that the 1980s and 1990s gave rise to. . . . [A] major contribution to aspects of art history that too often are relegated to the periphery within both the academy and contemporary art criticism. In this regard, we have much to thank Jones for, as this volume will be an indispensable aid to students, professors, and general audiences, many of whom might not have easy access to Jones’s writings, in their original form and assorted contexts.” (Eddie Chambers Journal of American Studies)

“EyeMinded is at the top of my summer reading list.” (Lauren Haynes Studio Magazine)

“Kellie Jones has had a fascinating life in art. This collection of essays offers vivid glimpses into the childhood and professional experience of this noted art historian and curator. . . . Everything Kellie Jones and her brilliant family have to say on art and life is both welcome and stimulating.” (Michele Wallace International Review of African American Art)

“Kellie Jones’ superb book, EyeMinded, traces the relationship between the visual and the social in contemporary art and, by so doing, teaches us how to see. . . . The book is a must-read for art historians and museum curators, just as for those within the field of cultural studies who aspire to an interdisciplinary approach.” (Liana Giorgi New York Journal of Books)

Ethics of Liberation: In the Age of Globalization and Exclusion (Latin America Otherwise), by Enriqué Dussel

Available in English for the first time, this much-anticipated translation of Enrique Dussel's Ethics of Liberation marks a milestone in ethical discourse. Dussel is one of the world's foremost philosophers. This treatise, originally published in 1998, is his masterwork and a cornerstone of the philosophy of liberation, which he helped to found and develop.

Throughout his career, Dussel has sought to open a space for articulating new possibilities for humanity out of, and in light of, the suffering, dignity, and creative drive of those who have been excluded from Western Modernity and neoliberal rationalism. Grounded in engagement with the oppressed, his thinking has figured prominently in philosophy, political theory, and liberation movements around the world.

In Ethics of Liberation, Dussel provides a comprehensive world history of ethics, demonstrating that our most fundamental moral and ethical traditions did not emerge in ancient Greece and develop through modern European and North American thought. The obscured and ignored origins of Modernity lie outside the Western tradition. Ethics of Liberation is a monumental rethinking of the history, origins, and aims of ethics. It is a critical reorientation of ethical theory.

This field-defining collection consolidates and builds momentum in the burgeoning area of affect studies. The contributors include many of the central theorists of affect—those visceral forces beneath, alongside, or generally other than conscious knowing that can serve to drive us toward movement, thought, and ever-changing forms of relation. As Lauren Berlant explores “cruel optimism,” Brian Massumi theorizes the affective logic of public threat, and Elspeth Probyn examines shame, they, along with the other contributors, show how an awareness of affect is opening up exciting new insights in disciplines from anthropology, cultural studies, geography, and psychology to philosophy, queer studies, and sociology. In essays diverse in subject matter, style, and perspective, the contributors demonstrate how affect theory illuminates the intertwined realms of the aesthetic, the ethical, and the political as they play out across bodies (human and non-human) in both mundane and extraordinary ways. They reveal the broad theoretical possibilities opened by an awareness of affect as they reflect on topics including ethics, food, public morale, glamor, snark in the workplace, and mental health regimes. The Affect Theory Reader includes an interview with the cultural theorist Lawrence Grossberg and an afterword by the anthropologist Kathleen Stewart. In the introduction, the editors suggest ways of defining affect, trace the concept’s history, and highlight the role of affect theory in various areas of study.

The Circulation of Children: Kinship, Adoption, and Morality in Andean Peru (Latin America Otherwise), by Jessaca B. Leinaweaver

In this vivid ethnography, Jessaca B. Leinaweaver explores “child circulation,” informal arrangements in which indigenous Andean children are sent by their parents to live in other households. At first glance, child circulation appears tantamount to child abandonment. When seen in that light, the practice is a violation of international norms regarding children’s rights, guidelines that the Peruvian state relies on in regulating legal adoptions. Leinaweaver demonstrates that such an understanding of the practice is simplistic and misleading. Her in-depth ethnographic analysis reveals child circulation to be a meaningful, pragmatic social practice for poor and indigenous Peruvians, a flexible system of kinship that has likely been part of Andean lives for centuries. Child circulation may be initiated because parents cannot care for their children, because a childless elder wants company, or because it gives a young person the opportunity to gain needed skills.

Leinaweaver provides insight into the emotional and material factors that bring together and separate indigenous Andean families in the highland city of Ayacucho. She describes how child circulation is intimately linked to survival in the city, which has had to withstand colonialism, economic isolation, and the devastating civil war unleashed by the Shining Path. Leinaweaver examines the practice from the perspective of parents who send their children to live in other households, the adults who receive them, and the children themselves. She relates child circulation to international laws and norms regarding children’s rights, adoptions, and orphans, and to Peru’s history of racial conflict and violence. Given that history, Leinaweaver maintains that it is not surprising that child circulation, a practice associated with Peru’s impoverished indigenous community, is alternately ignored, tolerated, or condemned by the state.

Uneven Encounters: Making Race and Nation in Brazil and the United States (American Encounters/Global Interactions), by Micol Seigel

In Uneven Encounters, Micol Seigel chronicles the exchange of popular culture between Brazil and the United States in the years between the World Wars, and demonstrates how that exchange affected ideas of race and nation in both countries. From Americans interpreting advertisements for Brazilian coffee or dancing the Brazilian maxixe, to Rio musicians embracing the “foreign” qualities of jazz, Seigel traces a lively, cultural back and forth. Along the way, she shows how race and nation for both elites and non-elites are constructed together, and driven by global cultural and intellectual currents as well as local, regional, and national ones.

Seigel explores the circulation of images of Brazilian coffee and of maxixe in the United States during the period just after the imperial expansions of the early twentieth century. Exoticist interpretations structured North Americans’ paradoxical sense of themselves as productive “consumer citizens.” Some people, however, could not simply assume the privileges of citizenship. In their struggles against racism, Afro-descended citizens living in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, New York, and Chicago encountered images and notions of each other, and found them useful. Seigel introduces readers to cosmopolitan Afro-Brazilians and African Americans who rarely traveled far from home but who nonetheless absorbed ideas from abroad. She suggests that studies comparing U.S. and Brazilian racial identities as two distinct constructions are misconceived. Racial formation transcends national borders; attempts to understand it must do the same.

Translocalities/Translocalidades: Feminist Politics of Translation in the Latin/a AméricasFrom Duke University Press Books

Translocalities/Translocalidades is a path-breaking collection of essays on Latin American, Caribbean, and United States–based Latina feminisms and their multiple translations and cross-pollinations. The contributors come from countries throughout the Américas and are based in diverse disciplines, including media studies, literature, Chicana/o studies, and political science. Together, they advocate a hemispheric politics based on the knowledge that today, many sorts of Latin/o-americanidades—Afro, queer, indigenous, feminist, and so on—are constructed through processes of translocation. Latinidad in the South, North and Caribbean "middle" of the Américas, is constituted out of the intersections of the intensified cross-border, transcultural, and translocal flows that characterize contemporary transmigration throughout the hemisphere, from La Paz to Buenos Aires to Chicago and back again. Rather than immigrating and assimilating, many people in the Latin/a Américas increasingly move back and forth between localities, between historically situated and culturally specific, though increasingly porous, places, across multiple borders, and not just between nations. The contributors deem these multidirectional crossings and movements, and the positionalities engendered, translocalities/translocalidades.

Review
"This ambitious, compelling volume is a brilliant example of the thing it aims to study: the challenges, methods, and achievements of transnational women's activism across the Américas. Based on years of collaboration among twenty-two scholars from a dozen countries and as many disciplines, Translocalities/Translocalidades explores the translocal as political project and episteme, unfolding in interactions among indigenous, lesbian, women of color, Afrolatin@, and Third World feminist movements, through endless acts of translation, self-translation, and mediation. A joy to read."
(Mary Louise Pratt, author of Imperial Eyes: Travel Writing and Transculturation)

"Translocalities/Translocalidades answers an urgent need to examine the diverse levels of Latin/a Américas feminisms throughout the Américas. The teasing out of conflicts over power, representation, authority, and authorship; community organizations and local actors; and the state and the political economy is central to our understanding of the complex power dynamics at play in the hemispheric travels of feminisms." (Frances R. Aparicio, coeditor of Musical Migrations: Transnationalism and Cultural Hybridity in Latin/o America)

"One of the triumphs of this collection of essays is its breadth and depth regarding the notions of translation, translocation and the intersections of feminism, activism and language in and across many of the cultures within Latin America, and U.S. Latina/o diasporic communities." (Ilana Dann Luna Ameriquests)

"[T]his collection is a brilliant contribution to feminist teaching and research on the constantly changing and fluid crossings of people, capital, cultures, and technologies. It is a beautifully presented set of narratives, theories, and visions that translate the differently lived and contested meanings of 'Latin/a' feminisms. It is grounded in the Americas but will resonate profoundly with all people engaged in feminist transnational communities and networks for social and political transformation."  (Wendy Harcourt Hispanic American Historical Review 2016-08-01)

Fado Resounding: Affective Politics and Urban Life, by Lila Ellen Gray

Fado, Portugal's most celebrated genre of popular music, can be heard in Lisbon clubs, concert halls, tourist sites, and neighborhood bars. Fado sounds traverse the globe, on internationally marketed recordings, as the "soul" of Lisbon. A fadista might sing until her throat hurts, the voice hovering on the break of a sob; in moments of sung beauty listeners sometimes cry. Providing an ethnographic account of Lisbon's fado scene, Lila Ellen Gray draws on research conducted with amateur fado musicians, fadistas, communities of listeners, poets, fans, and cultural brokers during the first decade of the twenty-first century. She demonstrates the power of music to transform history and place into feeling in a rapidly modernizing nation on Europe's periphery, a country no longer a dictatorship or an imperial power. Gray emphasizes the power of the genre to absorb sounds, memories, histories, and styles and transform them into new narratives of meaning and "soul."

Review
"Fado Resounding is an impressive and engaging book, one that will expand understanding of fado beyond Portugal. Lila Ellen Gray takes up a wide range of topics, discussing fado in relation to emotion, historical mythologies, gender, and the idea of 'soulfulness,' as well as Lisbon, national identity, and world music. This is a stimulating contribution to the anthropology of expressive cultural forms."—João Leal, Universidade Nova de Lisboa

"Lila Ellen Gray positions Lisbon's amateur fado scene in terms of all the contestation about what fado is and where the action is taking place. This positioning is a unique and valuable contribution to music ethnography, and Gray does major and convincing intellectual work arguing for 'amateur' scenes as paths into the deepest musical and ethnographic understandings of genre, style, performance, poesis, and the ways that sociality is lived and experienced through sound."—Steven Feld, author of Jazz Cosmopolitanism in Accra: Five Musical Years in Ghana

"Lila Ellen Gray’s Fado Resounding: Affective Politics and Urban Life has the feel of a magnum opus. Ambitious in its breadth, it is clear from the get-go that this study is no small undertaking. Indeed, this is the first full-length ethnography of Portuguese fado published in English.... Lila Ellen Gray’s many years of good, old-fashioned fieldwork... has produced a highly nuanced, original contribution to knowledge around Portugal’s legendary 'national song.'" (Kimberly DaCosta Holton Ellipsis)

"Fado Resounding is a powerful ethnographic account in which Lila Ellen Gray argues compellingly that the musical genre of fado performs invaluable labors in locating, synthesizing and activating modes of experience, expression and interaction....[The book] weaves together incredibly vivid ethnographic accounts with incisive analyses that will be of great use to scholars working on vocality and gender, as well as constructions and articulations of locality, history and genre." (Joshua Brown Ethnomusicology Review)

“In Fado Resounding, Gray makes a compelling response. Her study of fado stands out in making the intangible tangible, finding resonance across time and place, and locating fado’s meaning as genre, as soul, as Lisbon.” (Danielle M. Kuntz Notes)

“This work provided a compelling account of the embodiment of place and history in amateur, semi-professional and professional fado practice, mixing detailed ethnographic study with theories of gender, place, embodied performance and affect…. The text will certainly be required reading for anyone wishing to understand this bittersweet genre and its complex relationship with its past, place, politics and people.” (Richard Elliott Popular Music)

“This is a beautifully written book, ethnographically rich and detailed, yet hard to classify: it is ethnomusicology, anthropology, linguistics, identity and gender politics. It is also poetry and music.” (Raquel Rodrigues Machaqueiro Anthropological Quarterly)

“This ethnography will appeal to readers from anthropology, music studies, and Portuguese studies, as well as those who simply seek an authoritative source on Lisbon’s amateur fado scene in the early twenty-first century. Gray opens up new pathways to understanding the affective power of genre in popular music and the complex relationship of fado to narratives of nation, place, and identity in Portugal." (Katherine Brucher Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute)

"Gray’s brilliant and accessible monograph reads elegantly and proudly, much like fado itself." (Kathryn Metz Journal of Anthropological Research 2016-02-01)

“Fado Resounding is well written and accessible to the general reader yet it integrates eclectic, interdisciplinary theories, and includes an up-to-date bibliography and extensive research notes for the more informed reader. This book is a valuable contribution to the field of Portuguese culture and music studies in general, and to fado studies in particular…. This is the first scholarly book of its kind, and perhaps only the third work in the last century based primarily on empirical research amongst urban, amateur fado singers.”  (Michael Colvin The World of Music 2015-12-01)

A laudable effort
By Elsa Shepard
A considerable amount of effort may have gone into the production of this work, but there could have been a better outcome. This is an outsider's view, to which anyone is entitled, but hindered by misconstrued interpretations and possibly also inaccurate data. For insight into Portuguese fado singing and associated culture and history, there is some information on the web. I would suggest two articles by Manuela Cook, one to be found on [...] and the other on [...] the latter on the Salazar period.

Mourning the Nation: Indian Cinema in the Wake of Partition, by Bhaskar Sarkar

What remains of the “national” when the nation unravels at the birth of the independent state? The political truncation of India at the end of British colonial rule in 1947 led to a social cataclysm in which roughly one million people died and ten to twelve million were displaced. Combining film studies, trauma theory, and South Asian cultural history, Bhaskar Sarkar follows the shifting traces of this event in Indian cinema over the next six decades. He argues that Partition remains a wound in the collective psyche of South Asia and that its representation on screen enables forms of historical engagement that are largely opaque to standard historiography.

Sarkar tracks the initial reticence to engage with the trauma of 1947 and the subsequent emergence of a strong Partition discourse, revealing both the silence and the eventual “return of the repressed” as strands of one complex process. Connecting the relative silence of the early decades after Partition to a project of postcolonial nation-building and to trauma’s disjunctive temporal structure, Sarkar develops an allegorical reading of the silence as a form of mourning. He relates the proliferation of explicit Partition narratives in films made since the mid-1980s to disillusionment with post-independence achievements, and he discusses how current cinematic memorializations of 1947 are influenced by economic liberalization and the rise of a Hindu-chauvinist nationalism. Traversing Hindi and Bengali commercial cinema, art cinema, and television, Sarkar provides a history of Indian cinema that interrogates the national (a central category organizing cinema studies) and participates in a wider process of mourning the modernist promises of the nation form.

Private Bodies, Public Texts: Race, Gender, and a Cultural Bioethics, by Karla FC Holloway

In Private Bodies, Public Texts, Karla FC Holloway examines instances where medical issues and information that would usually be seen as intimate, private matters are forced into the public sphere. As she demonstrates, the resulting social dramas often play out on the bodies of women and African Americans. Holloway discusses the spectacle of the Terri Schiavo right-to-die case and the injustice of medical researchers’ use of Henrietta Lacks’s cell line without her or her family’s knowledge or permission. She offers a provocative reading of the Tuskegee syphilis study and a haunting account of the ethical dilemmas that confronted physicians, patients, and families when a hospital became a space for dying rather than healing during Hurricane Katrina; even at that dire moment, race mattered. Private Bodies, Public Texts is a compelling call for a cultural bioethics that attends to the historical and social factors that render some populations more vulnerable than others in medical and legal contexts. Holloway proposes literature as a conceptual anchor for discussions of race, gender, bioethics, and the right to privacy. Literary narratives can accommodate thick description, multiple subjectivities, contradiction, and complexity.

Review
“In her exceptional book, Holloway turns to literature to ‘illustrate matters of ethical concern and to assist listeners in hearing a patient’s story, in order to develop a more thoughtful perspective on treatment.’ . . . Holloway offers incisive comments that relate fictional episodes to real-life events, enhancing the ability of both to reveal the deep connections that bind ethics to culture, race, and gender. Private Bodies, Public Texts invites health professionals, lawyers and ethicists to honor those connections.” - Karunesh Tuli, ForeWord Reviews

‘[Holloway] offers a cultural bioethics that may be able to help us understand and navigate the complex narratives we are co-creating.”
- Brent Winter, News and Observer

“Private Bodies, Public Texts is a creative and complicated call to do bioethics differently. . . . Holloway's encyclopedic collection of legal and bioethical cases, melded with captivating fiction and discriminating analyses, make this book nourishing sustenance for anyone who believes that bioethics
has a way to go in understanding not only that race and gender matter but also how they matter.” - Charlene Galarneau, Women’s Review of Books

“The strength of Private Bodies, Public Texts is that it effectively demonstrates how the moral subject of bioethics is universal and impartial only insofar as it assumes the perspective of white, middle-class men.” - Stephanie Jenkins, Signs

“Holloway’s book is undoubtedly a significant achievement, especially in its deep exposition of how racial and gender constructs shape and frame attitudes, practices, and beliefs towards the value of privacy in medicine and science. Scholars using tools drawn from narrative and cultural studies in bioethical inquiry will find in Holloway’s approach a model for the potential of such frameworks to enrich and thicken bioethical analysis and a road map for important and developing modalities in second-generation American bioethics.” - Daniel S. Goldberg, Journal of Medical Humanties

“Private Bodies/Public Texts is an illuminating meditation on the social construction of personal identity, with special focus on gender and racial categorizations in biomedical ethics. Drawing on diverse sources from medicine, law and literature, Karla FC Holloway shows how devalued gender and racial identities not only set the stage for past biomedical abuses but are ironically replicated in the paradigmatic examples that contemporary bioethics invokes in the supposed service of correcting those abuses. This is a subtle, challenging book.”—Robert A. Burt, Alexander M. Bickel Professor of Law, Yale University

“Private Bodies/Public Texts is as powerful as it is beautifully written. Karla FC Holloway’s is a very different kind of bioethics, one that challenges us to think both more broadly and more specifically about what privacy and justice mean. And she reminds us, with sometimes piercing insight, just how critical gender and race can be in making meaning out of both.”—Ruth R. Faden, Director, Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics

“Karla FC Holloway has written an important book that challenges the objectification of patients’ stories that is so common in the practice of bioethics. She persuasively argues for a cultural ethics, an ethics which gives constitutive weight to the cultural context of those stories, especially the cultural contexts of race and gender identity. Using this approach, she presents crucial new insights into issues of reproduction, clinical trials, genomics and death and dying. Her discussion of the events at Memorial Medical Center after Katrina will become a classic in the field. But most importantly, she shows us that the practice of bioethics must change if it is to successfully relate to the issues raised by the thick narratives of reality.”—Baruch A. Brody, Baylor College of Medicine

“...Holloway’s Private Bodies, Public Texts, is a tour de force of interdisciplinary analysis...All of Holloway’s disciplinary investments are evident in this book, as she deftly weaves between works of American literature, landmark cases in American legal history, and moments in the history of American medical experimentation to advance her argument.” (José E. The Black Body in Ecstasy: Reading Race, Reading Pornography (Next Wave: New Directions in Women's Studies), by Jennifer Christine Nash

In The Black Body in Ecstasy, Jennifer C. Nash rewrites black feminism's theory of representation. Her analysis moves beyond black feminism's preoccupation with injury and recovery to consider how racial fictions can create a space of agency and even pleasure for black female subjects. Nash's innovative readings of hardcore pornographic films from the 1970s and 1980s develop a new method of analyzing racialized pornography that focuses on black women's pleasures in blackness: delights in toying with and subverting blackness, moments of racialized excitement, deliberate enactments of hyperbolic blackness, and humorous performances of blackness that poke fun at the fantastical project of race. Drawing on feminist and queer theory, critical race theory, and media studies, Nash creates a new black feminist interpretative practice, one attentive to the messy contradictions—between delight and discomfort, between desire and degradation—at the heart of black pleasures.

Review
"In The Black Body in Ecstasy, Jennifer C. Nash abandons a long-standing framework in black feminist criticism: that pornography is bad to and for black women. She boldly reads pornography for black women's ecstasy. Through careful analysis of key films from porn's golden era, Nash develops an argument that is innovative, fearless, and, ultimately, affirming of possibilities for black women's bodies, fantasies, and sexual lives." (Nicole R. Fleetwood, author of Troubling Vision: Performance, Visuality, and Blackness)

"This is an important book and its readers will know it. The first chapter on black feminist theories of representation brilliantly contextualizes the political stakes of the book's commitment to black women's pleasure. I predict that The Black Body in Ecstasy will be considered the most definitive statement to date on black feminist theory's engagement with visual representation." (Robyn Wiegman, author of Object Lessons)

“The Black Body in Ecstasy is an excellent example of a ‘loving critique’ of a tense field...Nash’s intentional, clear structuring and synthesis, and her fascinating interventions provide a solid basis for future scholars in this field.” (Laura Abbasi-Lemmon Journal of Gender Studies)

"[E]ssential reading for anyone seeking to understand new work on feminism, critical race studies, pornography, and film history." (Svati P. Shah Women's Review of Books 2015-09-01)

"...[Nash's] alternative readings do give readers insight into the tropes within pornography, and into how certain films upset racist and sexist industry practices, as well as upsetting the Black feminist theoretical archive’s theories of representation and resistance in favor of a Black feminist theory of sexual subjectivities of pleasure and ecstasy. Nash has earned her place among a new generation of Black feminist scholars"  (Sherri L. Barnes Feminist Collections 2015-08-01)

A new generation of black feminist thought on sexuality, pleasure, and porn
By Profedeambiente
This book is urgent and exacting. It is meticulously crafted, rigorously executed and a joy to read. Deploying incredibly precise close readings, Nash uses pornography in order to make an argument about the need to create a theoretical opening that might allow possibilities for imagining the sexual pleasure of African American women. This is an urgent intervention into what she terms the "twin logics of injury and recovery." She argues that such limited logic makes the possibility of representing the sexual pleasure of black women "unthinkable." Her literature review of the existing scholarship on black female sexuality is full of nuance, even as she persuasively demonstrates the limits of much of that work in relation to the complicated messy realities of sexuality. That chapter alone restructures the kinds of conversations we are able to have about pleasure, sexuality, abjection and race; it will no doubt soon become a "go-to" piece for classes in feminist theory. Critiquing the canon of black feminist thought takes courage; Nash goes there without losing the love and respect for the generations of African American feminist scholars that preceded her. Throughout the book, Nash performs these delightful close readings of a small collection of films that she uses to make very specific arguments about race, sex, female pleasure and pornography. Race in this context becomes a technique, a practice, a gesture, a possibility that toys with forms of representations. The chapter on Blax-porn-tation is pure gold! She also devotes an entire chapter to humor, a complicated subject--especially when it engages race, gender, sexuality and abjection--and she brings a fresh, smart perspective to her readings. This book is both radiant and very accessible, very teachable and an important paradigm shift in feminist of color thought. Highly recommended.

the agony and the ecstasy
By Case Quarter
women in porn, specifically, black women in porn, and the body of the black woman as represented in non-pornographic photography and film used as pornographic or filtered through the pornographic, are topics comprising Jennifer nash’s THE BLACK BODY IN ECSTASY.

included in the text are grainy black and white photos of graphic images from pornographic films which some readers will find prurient. was the image of the venus hottentot as prurient? depending on the uses the representations of her were intended to serve at a given historical moment, the answer is yes.

some black feminists have written that all representations of black women not created by black women are harmful, most black feminist scholars agreeing that porn images of black women are harmful representations of black women as wounded by the violence of porn. some feminists have stated that pornography is more than imagery, that pornographic imagery is in itself an act of violence. this ‘black feminist theoretical archive…enforces a view of view of visual culture that makes it impossible to theorize black female pleasure from within the confines of the archive.’

nash’s mission is to expand space to show pleasure and ecstasy of black women within and beyond porn. for black feminists preoccupied with ‘recovery work…black feminist representation that attempts to salvage the black female body from the violence of the visual field.’

nash’s study is fourth generation scholarship of porn, the three preceding generations, anti-porn, pro-porn, and radical porn, the participants within pornography as sex workers. from representations, beginning with photos of, saartjie baartman, the woman known as the venus hotentot, nash traces the historical line of the representation of the body of the black woman as defined by the gaze of white men as pleasurable and humorous to the gaze of black women who, within the space of pornography, find their own sexual pleasure and humor.

discussing the silver age of porn, the 1980s, the shift from theater, the golden age of the 1970s, to home viewing, she reads photo representation, title and blurb on the box of the video BLACK THROAT as promising racial difference of a sex act. nash chooses not to accept the transparent sex act shared by members of two different races as the difference. nash cites the cinematic failure to fulfil the promise that a sex act with a black woman reveals some uniquely racial difference, any more than the crude barbaric pseudo-scientific practices to which the body of saartjie baartman was subjected long after her death.

other forms of pleasure and ecstasy for black women within pornography, which nash seems to suggests, can be found not just in sexual acts but also in singing, religious exclamations and spiritual rituals, and as much as these forms of expression may be termed nearly exclusive to black women, recognized within pornography these acts of pleasure and healing as positive are transformative and certainly worth noting, and, for scholarship, worth recovering.

nash’s book makes for highly interesting reading which will certainly open fresh dialogues and invite questioning. on a generalized level THE BLACK BODY IN ECSTASY provides new ways of looking at all manner of images, printed and kinetic, in which black women are included or thought about when they are absent.
