In Surfer Girls in the New World Order, Krista Comer explores surfing as a local and global subculture, looking at how the culture of surfing has affected and been affected by girls, from baby boomers to members of Generation Y. Comer discusses a write-in candidate for mayor of San Diego, whose political activism grew out of surfing and a desire to protect the threatened ecosystems of surf spots; the owners of the girl-focused Paradise Surf Shop in Santa Cruz and Surf Diva in San Diego; and the observant Muslim woman who started a business in her Huntington Beach home, selling swimsuits that fully cover the body and head. Comer also examines the Roxy Girl series of novels sponsored by the surfwear company Quiksilver, the biography of the champion surfer Lisa Andersen, the Gidget novels and films, the movie Blue Crush, and the book Surf Diva: A Girl’s Guide to Getting Good Waves. She develops the concept of “girl localism” to argue that the experience of fighting for waves and respect in male-majority surf breaks, along with advocating for the health and sustainable development of coastal towns and waterways, has politicized surfer girls around the world.

Krista Comer is an Associate Professor of English at Rice University. She is the author of Landscapes of the New West: Gender and Geography in Contemporary Women’s Writing.

What We Need

I am so thankful that this book exists.
Having participated in surfing, both at the leisure and competitive levels for over 20 years (I am a 3x women's world longboard champion), I found Krista Comer's intimate and intelligent way of describing women's surfing in its evolution, to be such an incredible breath of fresh air. The surfing world is almost violently shut in, working to silence opposing or analytical modes of thought. To have a book like this written with the feel of an "insider" but with an academic and compassionate voice is at once needed and welcomed. I cannot speak highly enough of this book and I have shared it with everyone I have ever had conversations with about women's surfing.
Comer has accomplished what other books on surfing could not: capturing the microcosm of globalization women's surfing allowed surf industry without overwhelming the reader with an "ivory tower" disconnection so often found in academia when writing of subcultures.
I have shared this book with my friends in the US and abroad and will continue to reference Comer's work for years to come. Gold.

Finally - a quality, academic study of the world of women, girls and surfing

I am a woman of color surfer from San Francisco and surf mostly Ocean Beach and Pacifica. I can't say I've ever read any thorough, academic, researched-based writing on women's surfing before I read this book. The title was intriguing to me so I ordered it online. I was thrilled to get a hold of it and really applaud the author for spending a decade to gather her research to write this.
Though at first the book reads as very academic, it's worth it to keep going. Midway through, the author recounts really interesting stories in her field research and interjects her feelings and opinions on them, which makes the book ever more interesting. She also has a really interesting and compelling way of articulating and describing what she sees changing, influencing and shifting in the world of surfing and women in surfing.
I am so glad there is a book that has come out that really looks at and describes the trends and gender nuances evolving in women's surfing today in a way that I know I understand, but would never be able to articulate as clearly as she does. I think this book is a must read for all serious women surfers, and for women (and men!) who function in some way in surf's growing economy. And if you're a woman especially who has been to a surf camp, who may not be a die hard surfer girl (yet) but who is interested in surfing, I think you would find the read fascinating. I read it in 3 days.....really loved it. Enjoy!

Fun and thought-provoking

Simply put: this book is fantastic.
I'm not a surfer myself, but as a young woman interested in young women's lives, I found this book really engaging. This is an academic book, so at times, there is a lot to digest, but it is well complemented by very well-written ethnographies, anecdotes, and readings of surf culture. Each chapter is different enough that it can be read separately.
Chapters two, three, and four contain vividly written and very interesting descriptions of surfers, surf camps, and surf shops. At times, it seemed like I was reading a novel that I didn't want to put down. These great stories are coupled with thought-provoking discussions and feminist critiques of surf culture. I particularly appreciated and was interested in Comer's discussion of different generations of surfing women.
Surfer Girls in the New World Order is important for its discussion of women, surfing, and globalization, but it is worth reading for how fun and engaging it is. It sounds cliche, but reading it really did make me want to learn to surf!
