Sugar was Cuba’s principal export from the late eighteenth century throughout much of the twentieth, and during that time, the majority of the island’s population depended on sugar production for its livelihood. In Blazing Cane, Gillian McGillivray examines the development of social classes linked to sugar production, and their contribution to the formation and transformation of the state, from the first Cuban Revolution for Independence in 1868 through the Cuban Revolution of 1959. She describes how cane burning became a powerful way for farmers, workers, and revolutionaries to commit sabotage, take control of the harvest season, improve working conditions, protest political repression, attack colonialism and imperialism, nationalize sugarmills, and, ultimately, acquire greater political and economic power.

Focusing on sugar communities in eastern and central Cuba, McGillivray recounts how farmers and workers pushed the Cuban government to move from exclusive to inclusive politics and back again. The revolutionary caudillo networks that formed between 1895 and 1898, the farmer alliances that coalesced in the 1920s, and the working-class groups of the 1930s affected both day-to-day local politics and larger state-building efforts. Not limiting her analysis to the island, McGillivray shows that twentieth-century Cuban history reflected broader trends in the Western Hemisphere, from modernity to popular nationalism to Cold War repression.

Staging the Blues: From Tent Shows to Tourism, by Paige A. McGinley

Singing was just one element of blues performance in the early twentieth century. Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and other classic blues singers also tapped, joked, and flaunted extravagant costumes on tent show and black vaudeville stages. The press even described these women as "actresses" long before they achieved worldwide fame for their musical recordings. In Staging the Blues, Paige A. McGinley shows that even though folklorists, record producers, and festival promoters set the theatricality of early blues aside in favor of notions of authenticity, it remained creatively vibrant throughout the twentieth century. Highlighting performances by Rainey, Smith, Lead Belly, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGhee in small Mississippi towns, Harlem theaters, and the industrial British North, this pioneering study foregrounds virtuoso blues artists who used the conventions of the theater, including dance, comedy, and costume, to stage black mobility, to challenge narratives of racial authenticity, and to fight for racial and economic justice.

Review
"This beautifully written and engaging account of how blues has been staged will change for good how theater scholars think of musical performance, and how music scholars think of theater. Paige A. McGinley's observation that 'authenticity is produced theatrically, on stage, in the context of the performance event' deconstructs the binary between authenticity and inauthenticity, allowing her to focus on black agency and subjectivity as it is produced in and through performance."
(Gayle Wald, author of Shout, Sister, Shout! The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe 2014-03-12)

"Staging the Blues is a much-needed, even game-changing intervention into dominant models for the study of blues music and culture. Based on amazing original research, Paige A. McGinley reassesses what we think we know about the blues, offers bold and insightful analyses of the racial and gendered politics of blues performance and reception, and, crucially, restores critical recognition of the theatricality of the blues and its historical place in traditions of popular performance." (Jayna Brown, author of Babylon Girls: Black Women Performers and the Shaping of the Modern 2014-03-12)

"A fascinating study that ought to be widely read and its implications thoughtfully considered. For scholars, critics, historians, and aficionados of the blues." (Genevieve Williams Library Journal)

“[McGinley] does a worthy job of explaining how the dominant framing of the blues essentially assigned the very notion of theatrical performance – and, by extension, a performer’s right to develop a stage presence of his/her own choosing – to a gendered, second-class status. The irony turns out to be that said framing was itself a theatrical construct in the first place.” (Mark Reynolds PopMatters)

“In this concise musical journey of the mise-en-scène of blues music performances, McGinley takes readers to the South, starting with the tent shows of an earlier era and concluding with the current staging of the blues for genre travelers and tourists. … Readers are left with the knowledge of what scenic staging has meant for blues throughout the decades. … Recommended. All readers.” (T. Emery Choice)

“Staging the Blues will likely become the latest in a line of mould-breaking scholarly works on the blues to have emerged in recent years. McGinley’s emphasis on theatricality brings life to well-worn subjects, and aptly illustrates the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach that is not yet the norm in blues scholarship. This book is quite simply a must for all scholars and students of African American performance culture.”

(Lawrence Davies Studies in Theatre and Performance)

“Tracing the iterative qualities of theatrical blues trappings and their transformation by blues performers, Staging the Blues makes an important contribution to our understanding of the production and performance of race. Its exhaustive archival depth recasts familiar performances and introduces new material that adds to the scholarly repertoire of black performance studies. Most significantly, it establishes a vital conversation between popular theatre and music that provides a model of interdisciplinary performance studies.”  (Shane Vogel Theatre Research International 2015-09-01)

"[T]his study will prove to be one of the most captivating additions to the scholarship on the blues to date." (Tammy L. Kernodle American Studies 2016-01-01)

"In short, this book is a must-read. McGinley’s methodology and historical purview tear down those worn-out perceptions of authenticity to reinsert the thespian dynamism of American vernacular music." (Stephanie Vander Wel The Journal of Southern History 2016-05-01)

While sexually explicit writing and art have been around for millennia, pornography—as an aesthetic, moral, and juridical category—is a modern invention. The contributors to Porn Archives explore how the production and proliferation of pornography has been intertwined with the emergence of the archive as a conceptual and physical site for preserving, cataloguing, and transmitting documents and artifacts. By segregating and regulating access to sexually explicit material, archives have helped constitute pornography as a distinct genre. As a result, porn has become a site for the production of knowledge, as well as the production of pleasure.

The essays in this collection address the historically and culturally varied interactions between porn and the archive. Topics range from library policies governing access to sexually explicit material to the growing digital archive of "war porn," or eroticized combat imagery; and from same-sex amputee porn to gay black comic book superhero porn. Together the pieces trace pornography as it crosses borders, transforms technologies, consolidates sexual identities, and challenges notions of what counts as legitimate forms of knowledge. The collection concludes with a valuable resource for scholars: a list of pornography archives held by institutions around the world.

Review
"Once Porn Archives is published, everyone working on porn will have to refer to this field-defining collection. It is an important book, notable for its compelling argument, stellar roster of contributors, intellectual heft, and broad theoretical scope. It is the most exacting and exciting statement about porn studies to date." (Robyn Wiegman, author of Object Lessons)

"Pornography and the archive? Each word in the title of this fascinating collection of essays seems—historically and logically—to contradict the other. Porn is private, ephemeral, and stigmatized, while the archive makes permanent and publicly accessible officially approved records. But, as the contributors to this volume persuasively demonstrate, pornography, since the discovery of Pompeii, is archival. Sequestered and preserved, pornography becomes 'archival dirt.' The many brilliant essays collected here, written by distinguished scholars from many disciplines (film, literature, philosophy, psychoanalysis, law) will quickly be recognized as constituting an indispensable text in cultural history and theory." (Leo Bersani, Emeritus Professor of French, University of California, Berkeley)

"The consensus in Porn Archives is that the conditions for the production and reception of pornography have changed so radically since the 1980s that the questions feminists were asking about censorship, agency, gender, violence, and power seem today, if not irrelevant, at least in need of a serious makeover. Given the diverse, transnational, cross-media archive that the volume brings together, the argument is persuasive—even to die-hards like me." (Heather Love Public Books 2015-10-01)

Economies of Abandonment: Social Belonging and Endurance in Late Liberalism, by Elizabeth A. Povinelli

In Economies of Abandonment, Elizabeth A. Povinelli explores how late liberal imaginaries of tense, eventfulness, and ethical substance make the global distribution of life and death, hope and harm, and endurance and exhaustion not merely sensible but also just. She presents new ways of conceptualizing formations of power in late liberalism—the shape that liberal governmentality has taken as it has responded to a series of legitimacy crises in the wake of anticolonial and new social movements and, more recently, the “clash of civilizations” after September 11. Based on longstanding ethnographic work in Australia and the United States, as well as critical readings of legal, academic, and activist texts, Povinelli examines how alternative social worlds and projects generate new possibilities of life in the context of ordinary and extraordinary acts of neglect and surveillance. She focuses particularly on social projects that have not yet achieved a concrete existence but persist at the threshold of possible existence. By addressing the question of the endurance, let alone the survival, of alternative forms of life, Povinelli opens new ethical and political questions.

Review
“Economies of Abandonment is an erudite book that unravels crucial linkages between the transformed character of liberal policies in our present and the shattered lives of those who live under its ever-expanding shadow. It will be widely read and appreciated for its thoughtful and provocative arguments.”—Saba Mahmood, University of California, Berkeley

“Elizabeth A. Povinelli’s book is ambitious and original. It reflects her extraordinary ability to move from high theoretical discussions of philosophical concepts, to broad perspectives on late liberalism, to precise accounts of political and legal controversies, as well as public conversations on sex, drugs, religion, ecology, and other matters. Her argument in Economies of Abandonment is impressive in its breadth and depth. The book will provide an important contribution to future critical discussions, not only in anthropology but much more broadly.”—Éric Fassin, École Normale Supérieure

“Economies of Abandonment impresses, to be sure, because of Povinelli’s penetrating analyses and intellectual sweep, but even more so because of her conscience, political passion and willingness to persevere.” (Kenneth M. George Interventions)

“Situated between the ‘eventful’ tenses of settler governance and anthropological imaginaries, Povinelli continues to trace out how we might produce positive sociographies of those whom settler states encounter, scrutinize and abandon.” (Timothy Neale Postcolonial Studies)

"Economies of Abandonment is extremely thought provoking, insightful and rich in ideas. It rewards, if not demands, re-reading." (Geoff Buchanan The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology)

Romancing the Wild: Cultural Dimensions of Ecotourism (New Ecologies for the Twenty-First Century), by Robert Fletcher

The worldwide development of ecotourism—including adventures such as mountain climbing and whitewater rafting, as well as more pedestrian pursuits such as birdwatching—has been extensively studied, but until now little attention has been paid to why vacationers choose to take part in what are often physically and emotionally strenuous endeavors. Drawing on ethnographic research and his own experiences working as an ecotour guide throughout the United States and Latin America, Robert Fletcher argues that participation in rigorous outdoor activities resonates with the particular cultural values of the white, upper-middle-class Westerners who are the majority of ecotourists. Navigating 13,000-foot mountain peaks or treacherous river rapids demands deferral of gratification, perseverance through suffering, and a willingness to assume risks in pursuit of continuous progress. In this way, characteristics originally cultivated for professional success have been transferred to the leisure realm at a moment when traditional avenues for achievement in the public sphere seem largely exhausted. At the same time, ecotourism provides a temporary escape from the ostensible ills of modern society by offering a transcendent "wilderness" experience that contrasts with the indoor, sedentary, mental labor characteristically performed by white-collar workers.

From Booklist
Fletcher offers readers a serious review of ecotourism and its evolution over the past several decades. Focusing largely on the U.S. and heavily sourced, this book will be valued most by readers seeking a springboard to their own research on the topic. Fletcher writes extensively on the role of the male ego and the need to prove oneself in nature encounters and then presents the flip side of the coin by considering sexism and the lagging role of women in such leadership roles as river guide. He deconstructs the “call of the wild” and the never-ending draw of the wilderness experience, which should resonate strongly in a reality-TV era that celebrates manufactured survivor situations. Altogether, there are few aspects of the human condition as it interacts with nature that the author does not touch on, from politics to psychology to sexuality and literature (Was Don Quixote the original ecotourist?). Any reader looking for a deep understanding of ecotourism should start here. --Colleen Mondor

Review
"In Romancing the Wild, Robert Fletcher examines the cultural processes embedded in, and brought to light by, ecotourism practices. Through vivid ethnography and careful conceptual framing, he shows ecotourism to be an organized system of ideas, practices, and values that produces places and peoples, and structures the interface between the natural and the cultural. Fletcher reads ecotourism through critical political economy, poststructuralism, and psychoanalysis and unpacks it as work, leisure, production, and consumption. With this, he gives the reader a truly anthropological view of one of the most enduring artifacts of modernity." (Paige West, author of From Modern Production to Imagined Primitive: The Social World of Coffee from Papua New Guinea)

"Thorough and sophisticated, Romancing the Wild is likely to become the key scholarly reference in contemporary studies of ecotourism. Its scope and depth mean it is a very useful resource for anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and geographers alike. It has even broader theoretical significance as a fascinating sociocultural analysis of contemporary ecotourism as a phenomenon of late-industrial society." (Rosaleen Duffy, author of Nature Crime: How We're Getting Conservation Wrong)

“Fletcher forensically analyses what it is about getting active in the great outdoors that chimes with the culture of its majority attendees – white middle class westerners.”  (Wanderlust 2014-07-01)

"Robert Fletcher, an accomplished white-water tour guide, ecotourist, and cultural anthropologist, emerges in this text as one of the rare few whopossesses the skill set needed to gain ethnographic entree into this elusive, fast-moving subculture." (Sally Ann Ness Current Anthropology)

“Although the main topic in this substantially researched title is why people engage in ecotourism, the practical implications of this study are important. . . . The book has serious implications for those who would promote ecotourism as a primary means of saving endangered landscapes, saying it may not be the panacea we had hoped. VERDICT Recommended for academic libraries.” (Library Journal)

“Fletcher offers readers a serious review of ecotourism and its evolution over the past several decades…. Altogether, there are few aspects of the human condition as it interacts with nature that the author does not touch on, from politics to psychology to sexuality and literature (Was Don Quixote the original ecotourist?). Any reader looking for a deep understanding of ecotourism should start here.” (Booklist)

"This book makes an important contribution to tourism studies. Further, by situating the ecotourist as the quintessential postmodern subject, Fletcher offers an analysis that will be of interest to a much broader audience, linking contemporary work to leisure and contemporary production to consumption." (Laurie Kroshus Medina American Ethnologist)

"In Romancing the Wild, Fletcher ... generally describes the contemporary ecotourist scouring the globe for the next adventure. Because anthropology is famous for getting at the humanity behind the data, works such as Romancing the Wild are particularly important." (Frank Hutchins American Anthropologist 2015-06-01)

"[A] comprehensive and well-written discussion of the ways in which adventure seeking activities like whitewater kayaking, mountaineering, and so on, can be used to think about how and why certain kinds of dominant cultural values, norms, and discourses – such as individual autonomy, self-actualization, continual progress, and class privilege – are formulated, communicated, and experienced in identity-shaping ways." (Luis Vivanco Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute 2015-11-01)

For nearly twenty years, the much-beloved music magazine Roctober has featured work by some of the best underground cartoonists, exhaustive examinations of made-up genres such as “robot rock,” and an ongoing exploration of everything Sammy Davis Jr. ever sang, said, or did. But the heart of the magazine has always been the lengthy conversations with overlooked or forgotten artists. Flying Saucers Rock ’n’ Roll gathers the most compelling of these interviews. Eccentric, important artists—including the rockabilly icon Billy Lee Riley, the jazz musician and activist Oscar Brown Jr., the “Outlaw Country” singer David Allan Coe, and the pioneer rock ’n’ roll group the Treniers—give the most in-depth interviews of their lengthy careers. Obscure musicians, such as the Armenian-language novelty artist Guy Chookoorian and the frustrated interstellar glam act Zolar X, reveal fascinating lives lived at rock’s margins. Roctober’s legendarily dedicated writers convey telling anecdotes in the fervent, captivating prose that has long been appreciated by music enthusiasts. Along with the entertaining interviews, Flying Saucers Rock ’n’ Roll features more than sixty images from the pages of Roctober and ten illustrations created for the book by the underground rock ’n’ roll artist King Merinuk.

A Different Light: The Photography of Sebastião Salgado, by Parvati Nair

A Different Light is the first in-depth study of the work of Sebastião Salgado, widely considered the greatest documentary photographer of our time. For more than three decades, Salgado has produced thematic photo-essays depicting the massive human displacement brought about by industrialization and conflict. These projects usually take years to complete and include pictures from dozens of countries. Parvati Nair offers detailed analyses of Salgado’s best-known photo-essays, including Workers (1993) and Migrations (2000), as well as Genesis, which he began in 2004. With Genesis, Salgado has turned his lens from human turmoil to those parts of the planet not yet ravaged by modernity. Interpreting the photographer’s oeuvre, Nair engages broad questions about aesthetics, history, ethics, and politics in documentary photography. At the same time, she draws on conversations with Salgado and his wife and partner, Lélia Wanick Salgado, to explain the significance of the photographer’s life history, including his roots in Brazil and his training as an economist; his perspectives; and his artistic method. Underpinning all of Salgado’s major projects is a concern with displacement, exploitation, and destruction—of people, communities, and land. Salgado’s images exalt reality, compelling viewers to look and, according to Nair, to envision the world otherwise.

Review
“Through exhaustive research on Salgado's work, Nair raises critical questions on ethics, politics, history, photography, and aesthetics. . . . Particularly poignant are the intimate conversations among Nair, Salgado, and his wife, Lélia, which add tremendous clarity to Salgado's worldview. Highly recommended for fans of Salgado's work and for those interested in photojournalism, documentary photography, and global humanitarian issues.” - Shauna Frischkorn, Library Journal

“[A]dvance[s] a perceptive, penetrating understanding of social and natural discord encoded in the photographs.” - Giovanna L. Costantini, Leonardo Reviews

“[T]his treatise is useful for its focus on Salgado and its contribution to the search for answers about the ongoing presence of what often seems an unsolvable but significant concern. Nair's book highlights another central core within Salgado's ongoing visual investigation: the varying relationship(s) between humans and the land. . . . Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers.” - C. Chiarenza, Choice

“This work constitutes, to my knowledge, the first book-length study of the Brazilian documentarist’s work, and as such it represents a significant contribution to Latin American scholarship on photography and beyond—to visual cultural studies writ large. The author effortlessly ranges across aesthetic theory, Latin American historiography, and postcolonial criticism, as well as theories of photography, in addressing her subject.” - Jorge Coronado, The Americas

“One need not be familiar with photographer Sebastião Salgado in order to uncover something innovative about visual studies within Parvati Nair’s biography. . . . . Nair effectively compares and contrasts Salgado to other influential photographers across time and place . . . while at the same time confronting both his detractors and fans through a theoretical lens.” - Bree Akesson, Visual Studies

“The importance of Salgado as a photographer is indisputable, he is the curator of chiaroscuro, and it is remarkable that Parvati Nair’s A Different Light is the first full-length study of him to appear in print. Her book offers an interdisciplinary overview of his work.” - Sean Sheehan, Dublin Review of Books

“A superb book on the most important photographer in the world today, A Different Light cuts a very wide swath: critical photojournalism, humanitarian documentation, political aesthetics, visual epistemology and historiography, representational theory, documentary ethics, the colonial gaze, the Frankfurt School, Latin America, Africa, the place of still photography in a rapidly moving world, ecology, art, profit, and concern. This is the book that the photography of Sebastião Salgado deserves.”—John Mraz, author of Looking for Mexico: Modern Visual Culture and National Identity

“An excellent study! Parvati Nair simultaneously places the work of Sebastião Salgado within broader contexts and illuminates contemporary debates on aesthetics, ethics, and photodocumentary, with welcome emphasis on perspectives from the Global South. A must-read for all those concerned with photographs as visible evidence.”—Liz Wells, Plymouth University, United Kingdom

“[A]dvance[s] a perceptive, penetrating understanding of social and natural discord encoded in the photographs.” (Giovanna L. Costantini, Leonardo Reviews)

Highly recommended for fans of Salgado's work and for those interested in photojournalism, documentary photography, and global humanitarian issues.” (Shauna Frischkorn, Library Journal)

“Nair's study is excellent because of its documentary quality. She interviews Salgado and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, as to their projects and the contexts of their work and she is careful to discuss in depth the controversies surrounding his work and the museological issues associated with the privileged exhibition of misery and poverty. Because it is so meticulously documented, the reader has access to an excellent understanding of the Salgado project.” (David William Foster Luso-Brazilian Review)

“With English language studies on Brazilian photography and photographers relatively scarce, A Different Light makes an important and very welcome contribution to the field.”

GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER, AMATEUR. AT BEST AUTHOR.
By gracies mom
The seller sold me a NOT FOR SALE edition used only for reviewing of copy.
There are only 4 or five terrible pictures with no range from dark to light. Knowing something of this
photographers work that is just wrong.
As for the writing it is college level at best and not inspired save by a selfish need to push her own agenda.
This photographer really needs a great mind to place him in histories context. He also deserves someone with both emotional and intellectual maturity, regardless of their age.
The book was not only misrepresented by the seller, but an unsatisfying, and frankly put, below level attempt for the professional market.

Roll With It: Brass Bands in the Streets of New Orleans (Refiguring American Music), by Matt Sakakeeny

Roll With It is a firsthand account of the precarious lives of brass band musicians in New Orleans. These young men are celebrated as cultural icons for upholding the proud traditions of the jazz funeral and the second line parade, yet they remain subject to the perils of poverty, racial marginalization, and urban violence that characterize life for many black Americans. The gripping narrative follows members of the Rebirth, Soul Rebels, and Hot 8 brass bands from back street to backstage, before and after Hurricane Katrina, always in step with the tap of the snare drum, the thud of the bass drum, and the boom of the tuba.

Review
“Roll With It, which includes striking black-and-white illustrations by New Orleans artist Willie Birch, is at once celebratory and saddening: a book of personal stories and a highly researched academic work.” (Geraldine Wyckoff Offbeat)

“Fascinating. . . . The musicians' personal stories are interwoven with historical information, academic reflection, and personal experience, combining to form a highly original work that creates a vivid portrait both of this musical format and the noble but beleaguered city of New Orleans.” (Florence Wetzel All About Jazz)

“As Sakakeeny makes clear, the story of the city’s brass bands is far more complex than music alone. Beyond its entertainment value, music serves as the ‘site where competing social, political, and economic vectors intersect.’ In many ways, these vectors serve as a microcosm for the problems within the city at large.”
(Kirkus Reviews)

“A notable work in that it’s the first critical project to chronicle New Orleans’ bombastic contemporary brass-band scene, the generation of musicians that grew up with century-old hymns in one ear and hip-hop in the other; also, and importantly, it’s a keen, social-justice-minded examination of the turbulent mix of race, economics, culture and tradition in which brass band culture is located.” (Alison Fensterstock Times-Picayune)

“Sakakeeny offers detailed accounts of parades and the inner workings of the bands. The book offers a full picture of their lives and how the city’s cultural economy works on the factory end. Sakakeeny observes the way the city celebrates its culture and especially its musicians, but the book also exposes the way many of them survive on the same earnings as low-rung service industry workers. It’s an engaging look street-level look at the bands that so often are used to represent and symbolize the city.” (Will Coviello Gambit)

"Roll With It is informative on many levels, detailing song structures, jazz history, neighborhood developments, and weaving information together through anecdote and research. It also poses a bigger question: If our city has economically benefitted from selling culture as a post-Katrina resource, are musicians getting what they deserve? Roll With It explores the answer.” (Samuel Nelson Where Y'at?)

“Damn, now that’s musicology. . . . Among the book’s other accomplishments, it’s a model of how to write an academic text that can engage a real-world reader."
(Ned Sublett)

"A new essential in the post-Katrina history of New Orleans, Roll With It is, perhaps, the most astute and clear-headed assessment of how the musical essence of New Orleans is ingrained in the personal and political lives of those who live in that extraordinary city. The brass-band culture detailed lovingly here by Matt Sakakeeny is no mere entertainment to those who understand it, nor is it there as tourist-bait or as a museum piece of quaint tradition. This is New Orleans itself, arguing for itself, and using culture as language and currency. To the extent thus far possible, what has saved New Orleans–more than government fiat, or grand economic imperatives, or any hint of functional leaderships–is in the street, damn near every Sunday afternoon." (David Simon, creator of the television series The Wire and Treme)

"Matt Sakakeeny tells the story of a vibrant, living culture in prose so vivid and moving, it is matched only by the music about which he writes. His illuminating examination of the contemporary New Orleans brass band culture reveals what it means to create great art, to continually mold and revise a tradition, and to try to make a living under an often dehumanizing racial regime—a complex urban world where making music can be a matter of life and death. Roll With It not only opens our ears to the music and its urban echoes, but it opens our eyes, enabling us to finally see the people who make the second line move." (Robin Kelley, author of Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original)

"Sakakeeny’s approach to the tensions between continuity in change in Roll With It: Brass Bands in the Streets of New Orleans, searches past academic theories, tapping many interviews and his own experiences with musicians. . . . Roll With It deserves a wide readership in the post-Katrina boom."     (Jason Berry New Orleans Magazine)

“In addition to chronicling groups including the Rebirth Brass Brand, Sakakeeny provides a revealing look at the daily lives of musicians. . . . Detailed profiles of individual musicians make for a captivating narrative, and the book is beautifully illustrated with artwork by New Orleans native Willie Birch.” (Scott Barretta Clarion-Ledger)

“Roll With It adds a contemporary perspective to studies of New Orleans culture and music. What emerges from Sakakeeny’s book is a portrait of a city that, with all its challenges, still manages to support a vibrant musical culture.”  (John Paul Meyers Jazz Perspectives)

“Roll with It is an edifying, enjoyable, enlightening read and refreshing musical study. It conveys and embodies a vivaciousness, both the author’s and that of the musical people portrayed throughout the book, a movement through time and place that refuses to slow down or be diverted or silenced." (Ron Emoff American Anthropologist 2015-06-01)

“This is a volume in which rich ethnographic detail fails to obscure the broader framework of academic theory and personal concern for both the musicians and the music. Roll With It belongs on the reading lists of all those teaching ethnomusicology or ethnography in the modern world, those whose teaching engages with popular music, race, performance, tourism and economy, and those who are concerned about the relationship between their research (or the academic world in general) and the sociopolitical (and economic and racial) realities of the worlds in which we all live.” (Gregory Booth Journal of Popular Music Studies)

A different perspective
By Mike McAbee
Matt Sakakeeny combines a pure love for the music and culture, with an academically trained perspective to show the joys and the challenges faced by New Orleans' contemporary brass band musicians. A must-read for anyone who loves New Orleans music, or wants a realistic look at the lives of young black men trying to break away from realities of urban life in America.

What a fascinating read!
By Brian Allan
Really enjoyed this book. Well written, it is a fascinating look at the whole lives of these proud musicians, not sparing details of how hard a life it is trying to make a go in New Orleans. Also, being a tuba player I appreciated the amount of information presented about the New Orlean's Tuba players. A must read for fans of brass bands or anyone who wants a glimpse of the struggles of poverty in New Orleans.

Contemporary Chinese Art: Primary Documents (MoMA Primary Documents)From Duke University Press Books

Despite the liveliness and creativity of avant-garde Chinese art in the post-Mao era and its prominence in the world of international contemporary art, until now there has been no systematic introduction to this important work in any Western language. Moreover, most of the relevant primary documents have existed only in Chinese, scattered in hard-to-find publications. Contemporary Chinese Art remedies this situation by bringing together carefully selected primary texts in English translation. Arranged in chronological order, the texts guide readers through the development of avant-garde Chinese art from 1976 until 2006. Because experimental Chinese art emerged as a domestic phenomenon in the 1970s and 1980s and its subsequent development has been closely related to China’s social and economical transformation, this volume focuses on art from mainland China. At the same time, it encompasses the activities of mainland artists residing overseas, since artists who emigrated in the 1980s and 1990s were often key participants in the early avant-garde movements and have continued to interact with the mainland art world. The primary documents include the manifestos of avant-garde groups, prefaces to important exhibitions, writings by representative artists, important critical and analytical essays, and even some official documents. Each chapter and section begins with a concise preface explaining the significance of the texts and providing the necessary historical background; the volume includes a timeline summarizing important art phenomena and related political events.
