The Flower and the Scorpion: Sexuality and Ritual in Early Nahua Culture (Latin America Otherwise), by Pete Sigal

Prior to the Spanish conquest, the Nahua indigenous peoples of central Mexico did not have a notion of “sex” or “sexuality” equivalent to the sexual categories developed by colonial society or those promoted by modern Western peoples. In this innovative ethnohistory, Pete Sigal seeks to shed new light on Nahua concepts of the sexual without relying on the modern Western concept of sexuality. Along with clerical documents and other Spanish sources, he interprets the many texts produced by the Nahua. While colonial clerics worked to impose Catholic beliefs—particularly those equating sexuality and sin—on the indigenous people they encountered, the process of cultural assimilation was slower and less consistent than scholars have assumed. Sigal argues that modern researchers of sexuality have exaggerated the power of the Catholic sacrament of confession to change the ways that individuals understood themselves and their behaviors. At least until the mid-seventeenth century, when increased contact with the Spanish began to significantly change Nahua culture and society, indigenous peoples, particularly commoners, related their sexual lives and imaginations not just to concepts of sin and redemption but also to pleasure, seduction, and rituals of fertility and warfare.

Review
“The Flower and the Scorpion is a fascinating history of understandings of Nahua sexuality from the precontact era through the early colonial period. Drawing on a stunning array of Nahuatl- and Spanish-language primary sources, Pete Sigal considers what the Nahua wrote about their beliefs, deities, rituals, and activities relating to sexuality. But The Flower and the Scorpion is not only about the Nahua; it is also about the Spaniards and what they thought about sexuality, their own and that of the Nahua. Sigal shows us how different the perceptions of the Nahua and the Spaniards were, especially as they related to sex, and how different their ideas remained well into the seventeenth century, even as they lived in close proximity to one another.”—Susan Schroeder, editor of The Conquest All Over Again: Nahuas and Zapotecs Thinking, Writing, and Painting Spanish Colonialism

“This book emerges from a scholarly utilization of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century primary sources to illuminate not only very complex Nahua thought and practices but also the colonial context that shaped the discourse around themes that defy our modern labels, such as ‘sex’ itself. Pete Sigal employs his training in Nahuatl to analyze terms and texts in their original language, producing his own translations and interpreting meanings, always with an effort to delineate Western frames and biases that might color our understanding.”—Stephanie Wood, author of Transcending Conquest: Nahua Views of Spanish Colonial Mexico

“The scholarship offered by this study is sound, enlightening, and interesting. This work contributes to our understanding of Nahua perceptions of gender and sexuality according to autochthonous frames, and how they adjusted to the demands of Christianity. The Flower and the Scorpion is clearly written and very enjoyable to read.” (Rocío Cortés Hispanic American Historical Review)

“This is an important and provocative book, which deserves to be widely read by both Nahua specialists and gender historians. This is challenging territory, but those brave enough to venture there will find ideas which encourage us not only to rethink Nahua ideas of sexuality, but also to challenge the fixed nature of individual and collective identity.” (Caroline Dodds Pennock Gender and History)

“By exceeding any previous analysis of Nahua rituals’ sexual aspects, Sigal has made a valuable contribution to the history of religion and the history of sexuality.” (Louise M. Burkhart American Historical Review)

“[A] masterful job…. This is a fascinating and challenging work. Sigal has taken the reader back to pre-Columbian times and attempted to strip away the colonial layers of Spanish discourse and worldview in order to reach the Nahua of before the conquest. His is a compelling argument and will certainly serve as a point of departure for further research.” (John F. Schwaller Ethnohistory)

In the Name of El Pueblo: Place, Community, and the Politics of History in Yucatán (Latin America Otherwise), by Paul Eiss

The term “el pueblo” is used throughout Latin America, referring alternately to small towns, to community, or to “the people” as a political entity. In this vivid anthropological and historical analysis of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, Paul K. Eiss explores the multiple meanings of el pueblo and the power of the concept to unite the diverse claims made in its name. Eiss focuses on working-class indigenous and mestizo populations, examining how those groups negotiated the meaning of el pueblo among themselves and in their interactions with outsiders, including landowners, activists, and government officials. Combining extensive archival and ethnographic research, he describes how residents of the region have laid claim to el pueblo in varied ways, as exemplified in communal narratives recorded in archival documents, in the performance of plays and religious processions, and in struggles over land, politics, and the built environment. Eiss demonstrates that while el pueblo is used throughout the hemisphere, the term is given meaning and power through the ways it is imagined and constructed in local contexts. Moreover, he reveals el pueblo to be a concept that is as historical as it is political. It is in the name of el pueblo—rather than class, race, or nation—that inhabitants of northwestern Yucatán stake their deepest claims not only to social or political rights, but over history itself.

Review
“In a world of multisited, global ethnographies Eiss’s book reminds us of the value of deeply historical and ethnographic framings of the present. Enriched by contemporary social theory, In the Name of El Pueblo draws on the margins of the archive and the plurality and variety of forms of archives. Its recognition of dispossession rather than possession as a ground for ‘el pueblo,’ reminds readers that the most important forces in social life may not be found only in what appears to be fully present. For readers who have worked on similar issues in Mexico, this book beautifully captures the grounded and yet ephemeral sense of el pueblo.” (JoAnn Martin, POLAR)

“This work demonstrates a keen philosophical sensibility as it scrutinizes the complex undercurrents below the various struggles that indigenous Maya, non-indigenous townspeople, landowners, merchants, rebels, and government officials have each undertaken in the name of el pueblo. . . . Eiss’s work self-consciously seeks to avoid the mistake that many political philosophers make by turning el pueblo into an abstraction." (Alexander V. Stehn, The Pluralist)

"Eiss combines historical and anthropological data, methods, and approaches (microhistory, ethnography, and the history of the present) to explore the concept [of el pueblo] as realized in the Hunucmá region located in the northwest of Mexico's Yucatán peninsula. . . Following Michel Foucault, he does not consider communal identifications as stable but holds that present and previous modes of communal and collective identification may be radically different." (Wolfgang Gabbert, American Historical Review)

"This work is a beautifully crafted and painstakingly researched micro-history that mines a rich vein of documentary and material sources, including theatrical performances, deer hunts, engravings on shotguns, religious celebrations, local histories and a treasure trove of petitions, land claims, and judicial records . . . . In the early 1970s, the late Mexican historian Luis González y González encouraged his graduate students to research and write compelling narratives of rural communities. I am confident he had arresting interdisciplinary studies like this book in mind when he issued that call." (Allen Wells, The Americas)

"With his excellent writing, Eiss has given scholars an enjoyable and
thought-provoking read. … [T]his strong work provides a scholarly readership with a smart and well-written analysis of the long term struggles that formed an indigenous pueblo. Instructors will find the book an excellent choice for upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses. Ultimately, it is fortunate that Eiss managed to drag forth this deer from the Yucatecan wilds."
(Stephen Neufeld, Itinerario)

“In the Name of El Pueblo is a must-read for Mexicanists. It offers a masterful, detailed bottom-up view of history. It lays to rest once and for all the idea that Maya peasants remained quiescent and passive until revolutionary generals arrived in 1915 to overturn the old order. It clarifies the different visions of villagers and revolutionary leaders, traces the travails of a revolutionary order in decline, and shows the pitfalls and problems attending the agrarian reform process, a process that continues to define rural land tenure in Mexico.” (Terry Rugeley, author of Rebellion Now and Forever: Mayas, Hispanics, and Caste War Violence in Yucatán, 1800–1880)

“Few regions of Mexico have elicited as sophisticated a dialogue between history and anthropology as Yucatán has of late. With this book, Paul K. Eiss positions himself at the crest of this new wave of interdisciplinary scholarship. Daunting in its chronological scope and breadth of research and analysis, distinguished by a meticulously crafted and often haunting narrative, and pioneering in its interwoven understanding of community, popular politics, state formation, indigenous identity, and historical memory, this book sets a new standard for the production of Mexican social histories and ethnographies. In the Name of El Pueblo is a splendid achievement, not least for the probing questions it raises about the nature of history itself.” (Gilbert M. Joseph, Farnam Professor of History and International Studies, Yale University)

“[A] probing history of communities and debates about community in the Hunucmá region of northwest Yucatán. In revealing episodes, the study extends from the mid-nineteenth century to contemporary times. The analysis is innovative in important ways, notably by revealing communities’ often conflictive participations in key local and regional developments and by exploring their often contested constructions of their own historical understandings.” (John Tutino, A Contracorriente)

“[Eiss] shows how el pueblo, and history more generally, happen as people conventionalize events in telling about them before, during, and sometimes long after the fact. That Eiss succeeds in this attests to his skills as both ethnographer and historian. . . . Historians will find here the rich makings of history, anthropologists an adroit dissolving of ethnicity, culture, and community into the flow of time.” (John M. Watanabe, Hispanic American Historical Review)

“I find Eiss’s work thoughtful and engaging, a much-needed antidote to the official histories of Yucatán as well as the ahistorical ethnographies of an earlier era.” (Ron Loewe, Journal of Anthropological Research)

“Paul Eiss has delivered a new, epic work of social history/ethnography concerning an especially turbulent region of the Yucatan Peninsula. . . . All told, this is a masterful work that will merit the attention of Latin Americanists for many years to come.” (Paul Sullivan, Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology)

“Seamlessly blending archival research into the late colonial and national periods . . . with fieldwork in the region, Eiss demonstrates that rural Maya speakers were not ahistorical, but kept and interpreted a record of their past, from the pre-Columbian period to the present. . . . In the Name of El Pueblo provides an accessible, narrative-driven introduction to these genres that will work well in a classroom setting. Students will enjoy the Hunucmá district’s vividly depicted landscapes, stories, and personalities; scholars will find Eiss’s research and interdisciplinary approach solid; and researchers of Yucatán will find themselves feeling nostalgic for the countryside and the archives of the peninsula.” (Mark Lentz, Ethnohistory )

New World Drama: The Performative Commons in the Atlantic World, 1649-1849 (New Americanists), by Elizabeth Maddock Dillon

In New World Drama, Elizabeth Maddock Dillon turns to the riotous scene of theatre in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world to explore the creation of new publics. Moving from England to the Caribbean to the early United States, she traces the theatrical emergence of a collective body in the colonized New World—one that included indigenous peoples, diasporic Africans, and diasporic Europeans. In the raucous space of the theatre, the contradictions of colonialism loomed large. Foremost among these was the central paradox of modernity: the coexistence of a massive slave economy and a nascent politics of freedom.

Audiences in London eagerly watched the royal slave, Oroonoko, tortured on stage, while audiences in Charleston and Kingston were forbidden from watching the same scene. Audiences in Kingston and New York City exuberantly participated in the slaying of Richard III on stage, enacting the rise of the "people," and Native American leaders were enjoined to watch actors in blackface "jump Jim Crow." Dillon argues that the theater served as a "performative commons," staging debates over representation in a political world based on popular sovereignty. Her book is a capacious account of performance, aesthetics, and modernity in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.

Brilliant
By Sophia Dillon
This is a brilliant book. Elizabeth Maddock Dillon pulls from a vast and often unexpected array of sources, tracing the hypocritical maintenance of the Atlantic Slave Trade by the British people, newly free from monarchy. She challenges the Habermasian public sphere by revealing the ways in which many African-American and Creole people were erased from "the public," and explains the ways in which these erased people were able to perform their existence both onstage and as audience members at the theater. As someone who isn't much for academese or New World History, I found her arguments fascinating and clear. Leave it to Elizabeth Maddock Dillon to make this topic utterly compelling. I find that the best books leave their ideas indelible in my mind--"New World Drama" will be possessing me for a long time.

Virtual War and Magical Death: Technologies and Imaginaries for Terror and Killing (The Cultures and Practice of Violence)From Duke Univ

Virtual War and Magical Death is a provocative examination of the relations between anthropology and contemporary global war. Several arguments unite the collected essays, which are based on ethnographic research in varied locations, including Guatemala, Uganda, and Tanzania, as well as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and the United States. Foremost is the contention that modern high-tech warfare—as it is practiced and represented by the military, the media, and civilians—is analogous to rituals of magic and sorcery. Technologies of "virtual warfare," such as high-altitude bombing, remote drone attacks, night-vision goggles, and even music videoes and computer games that simulate battle, reproduce the imaginative worlds and subjective experiences of witchcraft, magic, and assault sorcery long studied by cultural anthropologists.

Another significant focus of the collection is the U.S. military's exploitation of ethnographic research, particularly through its controversial Human Terrain Systems (HTS) Program, which embeds anthropologists as cultural experts in military units. Several pieces address the ethical dilemmas that HTS and other counterinsurgency projects pose for anthropologists. Other essays reveal the relatively small scale of those programs in relation to the military's broader use of, and ambitions for, social scientific data.

Cities From Scratch: Poverty and Informality in Urban Latin AmericaFrom Duke University Press Books

This collection of essays challenges long-entrenched ideas about the history, nature, and significance of the informal neighborhoods that house the vast majority of Latin America's urban poor. Until recently, scholars have mainly viewed these settlements through the prisms of crime and drug-related violence, modernization and development theories, populist or revolutionary politics, or debates about the cultures of poverty. Yet shantytowns have proven both more durable and more multifaceted than any of these perspectives foresaw. Far from being accidental offshoots of more dynamic economic and political developments, they are now a permanent and integral part of Latin America's urban societies, critical to struggles over democratization, economic transformation, identity politics, and the drug and arms trades. Integrating historical, cultural, and social scientific methodologies, this collection brings together recent research from across Latin America, from the informal neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City, Managua and Buenos Aires. Amid alarmist exposés, Cities from Scratch intervenes by considering Latin American shantytowns at a new level of interdisciplinary complexity.

The Queer Child, or Growing Sideways in the Twentieth Century (Series Q), by Kathryn Bond Stockton

Children are thoroughly, shockingly queer, as Kathryn Bond Stockton explains in The Queer Child, where she examines children’s strangeness, even some children’s subliminal “gayness,” in the twentieth century. Estranging, broadening, darkening forms of children emerge as this book illuminates the child queered by innocence, the child queered by color, the child queered by Freud, the child queered by money, and the grown homosexual metaphorically seen as a child (or as an animal), alongside the gay child. What might the notion of a “gay” child do to conceptions of the child? How might it outline the pain, closets, emotional labors, sexual motives, and sideways movements that attend all children, however we deny it?

Engaging and challenging the work of sociologists, legal theorists, and historians, Stockton coins the term “growing sideways” to describe ways of growing that defy the usual sense of growing “up” in a linear trajectory toward full stature, marriage, reproduction, and the relinquishing of childish ways. Growing sideways is a mode of irregular growth involving odd lingerings, wayward paths, and fertile delays. Contending that children’s queerness is rendered and explored best in fictional forms, including literature, film, and television, Stockton offers dazzling readings of works ranging from novels by Henry James, Radclyffe Hall, Virginia Woolf, Djuna Barnes, and Vladimir Nabokov to the movies Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The Hanging Garden, Heavenly Creatures, Hoop Dreams, and the 2005 remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The result is a fascinating look at children’s masochism, their interactions with pedophiles and animals, their unfathomable, hazy motives (leading them at times into sex, seduction, delinquency, and murder), their interracial appetites, and their love of consumption and destruction through the alluring economy of candy.

Women's Studies on the Edge (A Differences Book) (Differences Books)From Duke University Press

At many universities, women’s studies programs have achieved department status, establishing tenure-track appointments, graduate programs, and consistent course enrollments. Yet, as Joan Wallach Scott notes in her introduction to this collection, in the wake of its institutional successes, women’s studies has begun to lose its critical purchase. Feminism, the driving political force behind women’s studies, is often regarded as an outmoded political position by many of today’s students, and activism is no longer central to women’s studies programs on many campuses. In Women’s Studies on the Edge, leading feminist scholars tackle the critical, political, and institutional challenges that women’s studies has faced since its widespread integration into university curricula.

The contributors to Women’s Studies on the Edge embrace feminism not as a set of prescriptions but as a critical stance, one that seeks to interrogate and disrupt prevailing systems of gender. Refusing to perpetuate and protect orthodoxies, they ask tough questions about the impact of institutionalization on the once radical field of women’s studies; about the ongoing difficulties of articulating women’s studies with ethnic, queer, and race studies; and about the limits of liberal concepts of emancipation for understanding non-Western women. They also question the viability of continuing to ground women’s studies in identity politics authorized by personal experience. The multiple interpretations in Women’s Studies on the Edge sometimes overlap and sometimes stand in opposition to one another. The result is a collection that embodies the best aspects of critique: the intellectual and political stance that the contributors take to be feminism’s ethos and its aim.

Ever Faithful: Race, Loyalty, and the Ends of Empire in Spanish Cuba, by David Sartorius

Known for much of the nineteenth century as "the ever-faithful isle," Cuba did not earn its independence from Spain until 1898, long after most American colonies had achieved emancipation from European rule. In this groundbreaking history, David Sartorius explores the relationship between political allegiance and race in nineteenth-century Cuba. Challenging assumptions that loyalty to the Spanish empire was the exclusive province of the white Cuban elite, he examines the free and enslaved people of African descent who actively supported colonialism. By claiming loyalty, many black and mulatto Cubans attained some degree of social mobility, legal freedom, and political inclusion in a world where hierarchy and inequality were the fundamental lineaments of colonial subjectivity. Sartorius explores Cuba's battlefields, plantations, and meeting halls to consider the goals and limits of loyalty. In the process, he makes a bold call for fresh perspectives on imperial ideologies of race and on the rich political history of the African diaspora.

Review
"Ever Faithful: Race, Loyalty, and the Ends of Empire in Spanish Cuba is without a doubt among the most original interpretations of nineteenth-century Cuban history to appear in recent years. By not treating the path of nationhood as preordained, David Sartorius focuses our attention on the phenomenon of loyalty—always contingent yet rooted in long historical processes of incorporation—and on the myriad historical actors who professed it. A valuable and welcome study."—Ada Ferrer, author of Insurgent Cuba: Race, Nation, and Revolution, 1868-1898

"Ever Faithful is an important book. Rather than add to the copious scholarship explaining how Cubans came to reject colonial rule, David Sartorius asks why so many remained loyal to Spain. Exploring how loyalty worked in practice, he focuses on people of color, whose allegiances were watched closely by both imperial and nationalist leaders. He offers an original and convincing thesis: that the history of loyalty explains as much or more about Cuban racial politics than does the history of revolution and independence."—Vincent Brown, author of The Reaper’s Garden: Death and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery

"David Sartorius illuminates and complicates Cuban history from 1808 to 1898, focusing on loyalty to Spain to understand enduring colonial rule, the expansion and end of slavery, and a late and limited independence. Diverse Cubans negotiated Spanish citizenship. In a complex racial politics, opposition to empire and to slavery often diverged—prolonging both. Ever Faithful begins an essential rethinking of empire and citizenship, race and resistance in Cuba—with powerful implications for Brazil and the United States."—John Tutino, author of Making a New World: Founding Capitalism in the Bajío and Spanish North America

"Sartorius has presented a thought-provoking and enlightening work that challenges the traditional narrative surrounding the topic under discussion and will force historians to reconceptualize the relationship between racial identity and politics in Spanish Cuba during the nineteenth century. This is an excellent work that should interest any academic concerned with the study of race and loyalty in the imperial context." (Gregg French H-Caribbean, H-Net Reviews)

"[T]his carefully crafted study of Afro-Cubans masterfully teases out 'loyalist" positions toward the Spanish Empire that evolved in 19th-century Cuba. . . . [T]he author comments on central questions of race, citizenship, and the perdurance of empire, whose complexities and implications extend far beyond the ever-faithful island. Recommended. All levels/libraries." (G. W. McDonagh Choice)

“Sartorius has contributed a work of unprecedented importance for the study of the African Diaspora in nineteenth-century Cuba. The well-founded revisions of longstanding assumptions in nationalist history will prove invaluable to future scholarship in the field.” (Bonnie A. Lucero The Latin Americanist)

"Sartorius has identified a vital and little-understood topic in Cuban, Spanish, and colonial Latin American historiography: the politics of loyalty of Cuba's free population of color in the nineteenth century." (Christopher Schmidt-Nowara The American Historical Review)

“[A] convincing demonstration that a contextualized history of loyalty is necessary to understand Cuba’s evolution in the long century that ended with the abolition of slavery and independence from Spain. . . . a major revision of the historiography of nineteenth-century Cuba that will also interest all students of race relations and colonialism.” (Aline Helg Slavery and Abolition)

"Overall, this persuasive account expands the scholarship on Cuban nationalism and provides insights into the parallel narrative of colonial allegiance. It also offers an important model for future studies on race and loyalty in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the broader Atlantic World." (Michele Reid-Vazquez The Americas 2015-04-01)

“Ever Faithful is a carefully crafted study of an aspect of nineteenth-century Cuban history that is seldom dwelled upon. Sartorius’s provocative perspective is strengthened by the importance he attaches to Cuba’s variegated political geography…. If Ever Faithful tells a history that is at times uncomfortable, it is not because Sartorius’s historical subjects failed to live up to our expectations. Understanding the persistence and versatility of Empire remains a vital endeavor, even if we do not like what we find.” (Andrés Pletch Journal of Latin American Geography)

"This book, rich in detail and in the variety of sources used, should open up the discussion of issues on racial identity, nationality, and political allegiances which may have been inhibited by patriotic considerations or priorities." (Fernando Picó New West Indian Guide 2016-06-01)

Fighting for Recognition: Identity, Masculinity, and the Act of Violence in Professional Wrestling, by R. Tyson Smith

In Fighting for Recognition, R. Tyson Smith enters the world of independent professional wrestling, a community-based entertainment staged in community centers, high school gyms, and other modest venues. Like the big-name, televised pro wrestlers who originally inspired them, indie wrestlers engage in choreographed fights in character. Smith details the experiences, meanings, and motivations of the young men who wrestle as "Lethal" or "Southern Bad Boy," despite receiving little to no pay and risking the possibility of serious and sometimes permanent injury. Exploring intertwined issues of gender, class, violence, and the body, he sheds new light on the changing sources of identity in a postindustrial society that increasingly features low wages, insecure employment, and fragmented social support. Smith uncovers the tensions between strength and vulnerability, pain and solidarity, and homophobia and homoeroticism that play out both backstage and in the ring as the wrestlers seek recognition from fellow performers and devoted fans.

Review
"Behind the hypermacho performance of pro wrestling, R. Tyson Smith reveals a backstage where hard aggressive bodies are actually soft and yielding, hypersensitive as lovers so that they don't cripple each other. It is more akin to ballet than battle, except that all the effort goes into giving the opposite impression. This is one of the great ethnographies of the backstage of occupations, of athletes, of show business, of the bodily self—and of social performance itself."
(Randall Collins, author of Violence: A Micro-sociological Theory 2014-03-12)

"To know only the flamboyantly hypermasculine spectacle of WWE is like believing that a Broadway musical represents America's love of theater. R. Tyson Smith's carefully rendered empathic ethnography reveals the oft-hidden world of everyday guys who do it all—the exacting choreographed routines, the grandiose costumes—because they love it. Yet underneath the artifice of fake combat lie real dangers and constant injury. These guys are, as Smith says, 'fighting for recognition,' yes, but they are also playing for real." (Michael Kimmel, author of Angry White Men: American Masculinity at the End of an Era)

“Immensely readable and as vibrant in its energy as the subjects it seeks to present and understand, Fighting for Recognition focuses on young men who make their living in professional wrestling. . . . Highly recommended. All readers.”  (E. J. Staurowsky Choice)

“[A]n entertaining read that can be used in a sport or masculinities course, or any other context that explores the paradoxical aspects of identity construction.” (Brian Fair Gender & Society)

"Smith demonstrates the value of taking this subculture seriously; for a place where white, working-class men must always battle the fear of being seen as fake or soft offers us a truly powerful starting point for unpacking the tensions and internal contradictions of masculinity." (Kyle Green Men and Masculinities)

"Smith has produced a highly readable and useful ethnography on the performance of independent professional wrestling. The book is invaluable to those working on performance and wrestling and develops theories of masculinity, physicality, and the labor of performance, which should find an audience even among those who might be less familiar with professional wrestling and its performance." (Theatre Journal)

"This theoretically sophisticated, fine-grained study of the quotidian practices of the Indy wrestling circuit will be of interest to scholars of gender, sports, and U.S. culture. It is also accessibly written and an ideal length for use in undergraduate courses." (Heather Levi American Journal of Sociology 2016-01-01)

"By examining the bizarre and paradoxical world of this marginalised, quasi-sporting subculture, Smith produces an insightful account of contemporary, working class masculinity as a complex construct.... Fighting for Recognition is therefore sure to rank highly on the reading lists of scholars interested in men, combat sports and masculinity, and also fans of wrestling with an interest in what takes place behind the spectacular veneer of on-stage ‘sports entertainment’." (Alex Channon Gender & History 2016-04-01)

Houses in a Landscape: Memory and Everyday Life in Mesoamerica (Material Worlds), by Julia A. Hendon

In Houses in a Landscape, Julia A. Hendon examines the connections between social identity and social memory using archaeological research on indigenous societies that existed more than one thousand years ago in what is now Honduras. While these societies left behind monumental buildings, the remains of their dead, remnants of their daily life, intricate works of art, and fine examples of craftsmanship such as pottery and stone tools, they left only a small body of written records. Despite this paucity of written information, Hendon contends that an archaeological study of memory in such societies is possible and worthwhile. It is possible because memory is not just a faculty of the individual mind operating in isolation, but a social process embedded in the materiality of human existence. Intimately bound up in the relations people develop with one another and with the world around them through what they do, where and how they do it, and with whom or what, memory leaves material traces.

Hendon conducted research on three contemporaneous Native American civilizations that flourished from the seventh century through the eleventh CE: the Maya kingdom of Copan, the hilltop center of Cerro Palenque, and the dispersed settlement of the Cuyumapa valley. She analyzes domestic life in these societies, from cooking to crafting, as well as public and private ritual events including the ballgame. Combining her findings with a rich body of theory from anthropology, history, and geography, she explores how objects—the things people build, make, use, exchange, and discard—help people remember. In so doing, she demonstrates how everyday life becomes part of the social processes of remembering and forgetting, and how “memory communities” assert connections between the past and the present.
