The Deaths of the Author: Reading and Writing in Time, by Jane Gallop

For thirty years the "death of the author" has been a familiar poststructuralist slogan in literary theory, widely understood and much debated as a dismissal of the author, a declaration of the writer's irrelevance to the readers experience. In this concise book, Jane Gallop revitalizes this hackneyed concept by considering not only the abstract theoretical death of the author but also the writer's literal death, as well as other authorial "deaths," such as obsolescence. Through bravura close readings of the influential literary theorists Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, she shows that the death of the author is best understood as a relation to temporality, not only for the reader but especially for the writer. Gallop does not just approach the death of the author from the reader's perspective; she also reflects at length on how impending death haunts the writer. By connecting an author’s theoretical, literal, and metaphoric deaths, she enables us to take a fuller measure of the moving and unsettling effects of the deaths of the author on readers and writers, and on reading and writing.

Review
“. . . Gallop has provided us with a profound look at what it means to read and write in the face of human mortality. Highly recommended for students of literature and literary theory.” - Emily Manuel, Global Comment

“Jane Gallop is no doubt one of the best readers of her generation, but with The Deaths of the Author she proves that her writing is unprecedented: sharp, brisk, with a great sense of rhythm, utterly sophisticated and yet perfectly clear, from the very first till the very last sentence.” - Jan Baeten, Leonardo

“Jane Gallop revitalises debates on the ‘death of the author’ theory by examining the effect the theory has on the author of a landmark work. She uses readings of influential literary theorists Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak to connect an author’s theoretical, literal and metaphoric deaths to discuss the idea.” - Times Higher Education

“Gallop meticulously yet gracefully analyzes the complicated relationship between a devoted reader and the author that inspires them. . . . Gallop’s impressive close reading breathes new life into these dead authors and fittingly pays tribute to the man who killed the author and liberated the reader by practicing what he preached at a level of insight and clarity on par with Barthes himself.” - Chase Dimock, Lambda Literary Review

“Gallop’s close readings in and around queer lives, the “fragments” that the “dead-but-still-going” author leaves behind, elegantly invite us into the traces, ghostings and shadows that viscerally render the imbrication between the theoretical and the personal — a dynamic often disregarded in many academic circles. By writing Barthes (then Derrida, then Sedgwick, then Owens, then Lynch, and then Spivak), [she] breathes life into the future-perfect corpses that are never really dead as such in the first place.
The Deaths of the Author conjures a corps de ballet in which Gallop cinematically choreographs shadows and bodies so that in their performance they commingle. I am thankful for the invitation to dance.” - David A. Gerstner, Reviews in Cultural Theory

“Always lively and lucid, Jane Gallop has produced another remarkable book. Taken literally, the familiar notion of ‘the death of the author’ acquires a wholly different resonance in these essays on major contemporary theorists, who reflect on the temporality of writing and the effects of deaths of authors.”—Jonathan Culler, Cornell University

“Jane Gallop is one of the small handful of critics who are keeping close reading alive. With this volume, she illuminates the stakes in paying such careful and loving attention to the words by which writers are turned, and turn themselves, into authors: stakes made visible on the relational field joining reader and author in an intimate bond that’s desirous, companionate, aggressive, indecent, sustaining, disturbing, unstable, and, when elaborated by a critic and thinker as gifted and incisive as Jane Gallop, also endlessly productive.”—Lee Edelman, author of No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive

Chocolate and Corn Flour: History, Race, and Place in the Making of “Black” Mexico, by Laura A. Lewis

Located on Mexico's Pacific coast in a historically black part of the Costa Chica region, the town of San Nicolás has been identified as a center of Afromexican culture by Mexican cultural authorities, journalists, activists, and foreign anthropologists. The majority of the town's residents, however, call themselves morenos (black Indians). In Chocolate and Corn Flour, Laura A. Lewis explores the history and contemporary culture of San Nicolás, focusing on the ways that local inhabitants experience and understand race, blackness, and indigeneity, as well as on the cultural values that outsiders place on the community and its residents.

Drawing on more than a decade of fieldwork, Lewis offers a richly detailed and subtle ethnography of the lives and stories of the people of San Nicolás, including community residents who have migrated to the United States. San Nicoladenses, she finds, have complex attitudes toward blackness—as a way of identifying themselves and as a racial and cultural category. They neither consider themselves part of an African diaspora nor deny their heritage. Rather, they acknowledge their hybridity and choose to identify most deeply with their community.

Mohawk Interruptus: Political Life Across the Borders of Settler States, by Audra Simpson

Mohawk Interruptus is a bold challenge to dominant thinking in the fields of Native studies and anthropology. Combining political theory with ethnographic research among the Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke, a reserve community in what is now southwestern Quebec, Audra Simpson examines their struggles to articulate and maintain political sovereignty through centuries of settler colonialism. The Kahnawà:ke Mohawks are part of the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy. Like many Iroquois peoples, they insist on the integrity of Haudenosaunee governance and refuse American or Canadian citizenship. Audra Simpson thinks through this politics of refusal, which stands in stark contrast to the politics of cultural recognition. Tracing the implications of refusal, Simpson argues that one sovereign political order can exist nested within a sovereign state, albeit with enormous tension around issues of jurisdiction and legitimacy. Finally, Simpson critiques anthropologists and political scientists, whom, she argues, have too readily accepted the assumption that the colonial project is complete. Belying that notion, Mohawk Interruptus calls for and demonstrates more robust and evenhanded forms of inquiry into indigenous politics in the teeth of settler governance.

Review
"Mohawk Interruptus is Audra Simpson`s bold challenge to the academic apprehension of the Iroquois. She has succeeded brilliantly. This book is now the authoritative history of Kahnawà:ke and a powerful statement that recasts our people and redefines how research on Indigenous peoples should be done. This is a long-awaited book by the most intelligent, passionate and incisive of Iroquois intellectuals. It makes me proud to be from Kahnawà:ke and deeply impresses me as a scholar." (Taiaiake Alfred (Kahnawà:ke Mohawk), Professor of Indigenous Governance at the University of Victoria)

"Few other works on contemporary Native American community politics are as wide-ranging and theoretically sophisticated as Mohawk Interruptus. By examining many competing but linked understandings of Mohawk national identity, Audra Simpson exposes a uniquely Indigenous and Iroquoian conception of community that transcends national and ethnographic prescriptions of unitary and fixed social identities." (Ned Blackhawk, author of Violence over the Land: Indians and Empires in the Early American West)

"This brilliant ethnographic and political study of how the Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke live and enact their sovereign nationhood and refuse incorporation is a masterpiece. It challenges and transforms the way Indigenous politics is studied in Anthropology and Political Science and deserves the widest possible readership." (James Tully, author of Public Philosophy in a New Key, Two Volumes)

“In her brilliant study of Kahnawà:ke, a Mohawk reserve outside Montréal, anthropologist Simpson rejects this dominant image of indigenous nationhood on the brink and ‘starts with a grounded refusal, not a precipice.’ The author problematizes long-standing assumptions to position the actions of the Kahnawà:ke nation as that of refusal, a valid alternative to political recognition. Through in-depth ethnographic research, Simpson identifies what is important to the community, as evidenced by her discussion of important intellectual Louis Hall, whose analysis of Mohawk nationhood has deeply influenced Haudenosaunee people, yet has been largely ignored by scholars.  . . . Such incisive analysis promises that this study will be influential and widely read. . . . Essential. All levels/libraries.” (K. L. Ackley Choice)

“Simpson accomplishes what she set out to do in this text, namely to offer a critical evaluation of settler colonialism as experienced by Kahnawà:ke Mohawk. Her book is beautifully written: her prose is elegant, and she interweaves ethnographic research with political history and theory to build her argument. … Simpson enhances our understanding of how a community of people struggle to understand, and why they must continually fight for, their political independence after centuries of settler colonialism.”  (Ruth Burgett Jolie Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism)

“[A]n essential read for any study of settler colonialism, native/indigenous/first-nation studies, or the study of sovereignty, and also stands on its own as an important narrative of North America’s ongoing colonial history.” (Ian Kalman Comparative Studies in Society and History 2015-10-01)

“Mohawk Interruptus deftly interrogates how settler colonialism and anthropological practice in the United States and Canada have circumscribed Iroquoian (Haudenosaunee) identities—and Mohawk identities, in particular—in ways that ignore contested interpretations of indigeneity and serve to erase indigenous nationhood. … A major takeaway from Simpson’s account is that anthropologists, political scientists, historians, and those of us in Native American studies need to theorize and examine how people experience and feel membership, citizenship, and nationhood while not replicating colonial projects of erasure in our scholarly research and writing." (Lisa K. Neuman American Ethnologist 2015-11-01)

“[A] tour de force exploration of contemporary Kahnawa:ke political life. . . . In its examination and sustained critique of the settler colonialism and the politics of nationhood, recognition, and refusal, and its vision of more productive and inclusive understandings of Kahnawa:ke citizenship, Mohawk Interruptus joins some of the most provocative and cutting-edge work taking place in Native/indigenous studies today. We would be wise to heed its challenge to develop similarly rigorous and critical studies of indigenous self-determination throughout the hemisphere, in whatever forms they might take.” (Kirby Brown American Indian Culture and Research Journal 2015-04-01)

"Mohawk Interruptus, was recently voted 'Best First Book Published in 2014' by the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, and after reading it I can understand why.... The complexities of Indigenous life in Mohawk Interruptus are given neither the security of romanticization nor the comfort of the scholarly pulpit." (Brendan Hokowhitu Native American and Indigenous Studies 2016-02-01)

"Rather than merely a book of and for anthropology, then, Mohawk Interruptus calls upon its reader to rethink action and collectivity through a different modality than the current political registers presume. Refusal, both as a political theoretical concept and as a quotidian shared practice, may allow a continued, powerful, and even potentially joyful relationship to state power." (Kennan Ferguson Theory & Event 2015-12-01)

"[Simpson] offers a highly nuanced and theoretically sophisticated ethnographical study illustrating the kinds of critical research questions insider researchers can ask that lead to new understandings and challenge the orthodoxy. Simpson has made a significant contribution as an insider researcher, an Indigenous studies scholar, an anthropologist, that highlights the exciting new era of Indigenous research we have entered." (Robert Alexander Innes Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History 2015-05-01)

"I expect Mohawk Interruptus will assert its place in the Haudenosaunee canon, which will compel subsequent scholars to take a closer look at how Indigenous communities in general struggle to maintain their political integrity under the pressure of a variety of colonially created borders and the laws that enforce them over the sovereign rights of others." (David Martínez Wicazo Sa Review 2016-03-01)

By good minds
Simpson eloquently and with much force lays out the issues of settler colonialism and the effects of on-going colonialism in her community. It is an exemplary book for it methodology and intervention in the field of anthropology, Haudenosaunee Studies, and in Indigenous Studies broadly conceived. Gate keepers should keep an open mind and perhaps learn something from her brilliant approach for thinking through ethnography and working with Indigenous peoples in asymmetrical relations of power. Native and Non-Native academics and Indigenous communities alike will find the style engaging.

Book balances high theory with first-hand experience and personal insight. Helps readers understand questions of sovereignty, borders, and the ongoing politics of colonization from a native perspective.

Amazing work. Perhaps the most important text to read for any aspiring Anthropologist, or any who wish to study the First Nations, or any indigenous people.

Speculative Markets: Drug Circuits and Derivative Life in Nigeria (Experimental Futures), by Kristin Peterson

In this unprecedented account of the dynamics of Nigeria's pharmaceutical markets, Kristin Peterson connects multinational drug company policies, oil concerns, Nigerian political and economic transitions, the circulation of pharmaceuticals in the Global South, Wall Street machinations, and the needs and aspirations of individual Nigerians. Studying the pharmaceutical market in Lagos, Nigeria, she places local market social norms and credit and pricing practices in the broader context of regional, transnational, and global financial capital. Peterson explains how a significant and formerly profitable African pharmaceutical market collapsed in the face of U.S. monetary policies and neoliberal economic reforms, and she illuminates the relation between that collapse and the American turn to speculative capital during the 1980s. In the process, she reveals the mutual constitution of financial speculation in the drug industry and the structural adjustment plans that the IMF imposed on African nations. Her book is a sobering ethnographic analysis of the effects of speculation and "development" as they reverberate across markets and continents, and play out in everyday interpersonal transactions of the Lagos pharmaceutical market.

Review
"Speculative Markets brings exceptional clarity to a topic of genuine importance—the relationship between transnational finance capital and pharmaceutical supply in West Africa. This is a brilliant multi-sited ethnography of a market, advancing new theoretical understandings of contemporary economic life in Nigeria and beyond. Kristin Peterson also makes a vital contribution to global health and pharmaceutical reasoning by raising critical questions about drug procurement, distribution, and efficacy." (Julie Livingston, MacArthur "Genius" Award–winning author of Improvising Medicine: An African Oncology Ward in an Emerging Cancer Epidemic 2014-03-12)

"Speculative Markets changes the way one sees the world. Starting with the contemporary pharmaceutical market in Lagos, Kristin Peterson ultimately narrates a history of the second half of the twentieth century. She makes sense of the massive dispossession in Nigeria without reducing the complexity and range of actors who enable the local circulation of pharmaceuticals, both real and fake. Peterson's ethnographic research and political-economic analysis are phenomenal." (Joseph Dumit, author of Drugs for Life)

“Peterson’s account, which at times personifies this complex history through dialogue and vivid scene setting, does not offer solutions per se but may be instructive in understanding challenges in other countries that rely on informal markets, as well as how global market forces can have a ripple effect.”  (Jessica Bylander Health Affairs)

"The account Speculative Markets provides is itself is densely layered, mimicking the story it tells. The tone and approach shifts and turns as Peterson guides us through Idumota’s crowded marketplace and through global capital." (Anne Pollock Medical Anthropology Quarterly)

“Speculative Markets tells a remarkable story of market creation, destruction, and rebuilding. It is a clear-sighted, hard-hitting book, but not a despairing one (it ends, in fact, on a distinctively optimistic note). It is also a book that demonstrates the contribution that ethnographic research can make to our understanding of the lives of pharmaceuticals…” (Javier Lezaun Somatosphere)

“[A] highly-detailed, carefully analyzed and enlightening piece of work, illuminating much of the complexities of African drug markets (and of markets and industries beyond Africa), with insights that will appeal to a broad audience.” (Emilie Cloatre Somatosphere)

“Kristin Peterson’s work finds root here and adds fresh perspective to well-worn conversation of drug markets and their machinations. … This is an important contribution, and it comes during a vital moment in global health. As diverse fields of research and industry continue to work toward equity of health for all, and attention is increasingly oriented forward, it is my hope that Peterson’s attention to historical detail can be a tool for thinking about how to proceed.”
(Ryan Whitacre Global Public Health 2015-05-27)

“Kristin Peterson’s new ethnography looks carefully at the Nigerian pharmaceutical market, paying special attention to the ways that the drug trade links West Africa within a larger global economy. … The book avoids the usual discourse of corporate greed, instead focusing on the ‘structural logics of pharmaceutical capital through which corporate practices can be understood.’ It is a timely and fascinating study.” (Carla Nappi New Books in Sociology 2015-09-10)

“Peterson suggests that an anthropology of global health might tell us about the transition from state-based production of health to a global one. It elucidates how global economic processes effecting pharmaceuticals have local outcomes, how processes relying on global connections are at work in the making of health. Most importantly she shows how market systems are delivering health care and the effects of these less planned economies on quality and access to pharmaceuticals simultaneously generating uncertainty and capital for those who trade in them.” (Andrew McDowell Biosocieties 2015-09-01)

"Speculative Markets is a boldly compelling example of ethnography that is at once thoroughly grounded in extensive fieldwork in one place..., but also situated in a rich and impressive historical narrative and a remarkably comprehensive account of relevant large-scale political-economic forces.... Peterson’s outstanding book will be of interest to historians, anthropologists, sociologists, and political scientists, equally worth reading if one is an Africa specialist or a student of the history of medicine, public health, or global political economy." (Daniel Jordan Smith Bulletin of the History of Medicine 2015-12-01)

"A captivating, beautifully written description of the dynamics of Nigeria’s drug industry." (Olubukola S. Adesina African Studies Quarterly 2016-03-01)

An engrossing, carefully crafted ethnography
By Marc DaCosta
Peterson has written an engrossing, carefully crafted ethnography that investigates West African pharmaceutical circulation within the context of speculative capital, asking more broadly and fundamentally what it is that makes a market in the context of globalized 21C capitalism. An essential read for anyone interested in reimagining the constituents that make up economic and affective life.

Theorizing NGOs: States, Feminisms, and Neoliberalism (Next Wave: New Directions in Women's Studies)From Duke University Press Books

Theorizing NGOs examines how the rise of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) has transformed the conditions of women's lives and of feminist organizing. Victoria Bernal and Inderpal Grewal suggest that we can understand the proliferation of NGOs through a focus on the NGO as a unified form despite the enormous variation and diversity contained within that form. Theorizing NGOs brings together cutting-edge feminist research on NGOs from various perspectives and disciplines. Contributors locate NGOs within local and transnational configurations of power, interrogate the relationships of nongovernmental organizations to states and to privatization, and map the complex, ambiguous, and ultimately unstable synergies between feminisms and NGOs. While some of the contributors draw on personal experience with NGOs, others employ regional or national perspectives. Spanning a broad range of issues with which NGOs are engaged, from microcredit and domestic violence to democratization, this groundbreaking collection shows that NGOs are, themselves, fields of gendered struggles over power, resources, and status.

Review
"During the past several decades, NGOs have spread throughout the world yet until now accounts of their seemingly unstoppable diffusion are few and incomplete. Theorizing NGOs is in all likelihood the most persuasive and successful attempt at mapping this veritable 'age of the NGO.' This collection of essays is crucial to our understanding of how these organizations operate as gendered spaces where diverse women subjects are constructed. The lessons for feminism are clear, and they are spelled out in terms of the intricate connections between NGOs, globalization, liberalism, and modernity." (Arturo Escobar, author of Territories of Difference: Place, Movements, Life, Redes)

"With NGOs playing a growing role in women's rights and women's welfare globally, this excellent and timely collection contributes to our understanding of the implications of this change for feminism. Examining what it calls the 'NGO form,' the book analyzes the ambiguous relationship between NGOs and the state in the context of neoliberalism and new configurations of the public and the private. It considers why gender issues are so extensively handled through NGOs and how the move to NGO–ization is reshaping feminism." (Sally Engle Merry, author of Human Rights and Gender Violence: Translating International Law into Local Justice)

“Theorizing NGOs offers timely and insightful perspectives on the intersection between NGOs, women’s experiences of NGOs and feminism across the world. Bringing together scholarly writings on women’s experiences with NGOs from different parts of the globe is definitely one of the highlights of the volume. . . . This volume is a must read for anyone interested in gender and development, and in the anthropology of the state.” (Lipika Kamra Social Anthropology)

"In representing more than a decade of energetic discussion and debate, this collection provides fantastic evidence of the dynamism and creativity of feminist activism in all of its forms.... It is a welcome and valuable contribution." (Miranda Joseph Women's Review of Books 2015-09-01)

Music, Sound, and Technology in America: A Documentary History of Early Phonograph, Cinema, and RadioFrom Duke University Press Books

This unique anthology assembles primary documents chronicling the development of the phonograph, film sound, and the radio. These three sound technologies shaped Americans' relation to music from the late nineteenth century until the end of the Second World War, by which time the technologies were thoroughly integrated into everyday life. There are more than 120 selections between the collection's first piece, an article on the phonograph written by Thomas Edison in 1878, and its last, a column advising listeners "desirous of gaining more from music as presented by the radio." Among the selections are articles from popular and trade publications, advertisements, fan letters, corporate records, fiction, and sheet music. Taken together, the selections capture how the new sound technologies were shaped by developments such as urbanization, the increasing value placed on leisure time, and the rise of the advertising industry. Most importantly, they depict the ways that the new sound technologies were received by real people in particular places and moments in time.

Review
“Measuring the cultural importance and metaphysical weirdness of that change is part of the project of Music, Sound, and Technology in America, an anthology of fascinating artifacts whose prosaic title belies its insights into the early years of the recorded-sound era. . . . [T]he editors of Music, Sound, and Technology in America exhibit a canny ear for the electrifying echoes between then and now.” - Andy Battaglia, Wall Street Journal

“A fascinating new book on early media. . . . A delightful read.” - Steve Ramm, In the Groove

“The editors have selected and assembled their material with perspicuity and wit, and anybody interested in the infancy of sound recording, cinema, and radio is guaranteed to experience frequent ‘aha!’ moments that transport them with a simple turn of phrase to the mind-set of an earlier age.” - James M. Keller, Santa Fe New Mexican

Taylor, Katz, and Grajeda have culled print and visual materials from the popular press, trade journals, and company archives that neatly capture the excitement of the new enterprises of radio, sound recordings, and film and the quandaries surrounding these media. . . . Highly Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.” - N. Newman, Choice

“Part history of technology, part reception studies, this anthology gathers advertisements, sales agents’ scripts, personal accounts, editorials and letters from hobbyist journals of the early days of recorded sound... At its best, the selections convey an eyewitness sense of first reactions to new technologies, before users’ expectations ossified… What shines through the book is how new technologies have opened up cultural battlegrounds for creativity, access and control.” - Emily Bick, The Wire

“As a resource, the collection is very usable and particularly student-friendly. The introductions are insightful without being exhaustive, which encourages further inquiry and discussion by providing guidance and direction to sound studies, cultural studies, and technological studies. This approach creates a versatile collection that is not only useful for research and scholarship, but which is also strikingly teachable.” - Victoria Willis, Popular Music and Society

“This is a much needed anthology…. We owe the three editors a considerable debt for doing the necessary research and for organizing and explaining the value of what they have unearthed.” - European Journal of Communication

"Music, Sound, and Technology in America provides a useful overview of the impact of technologies on American music and musical culture. It is a valuable resource, an engaging, well-organized anthology that will raise provocative questions for students of American cultural history."—Michele Hilmes, author of Radio Voices: American Broadcasting, 1922–1952

Other-Worldly: Making Chinese Medicine through Transnational Frames, by Mei Zhan

Traditional Chinese medicine is often portrayed as an enduring system of therapeutic knowledge that has become globalized in recent decades. In Other-Worldly, Mei Zhan argues that the discourses and practices called “traditional Chinese medicine” are made through, rather than prior to, translocal encounters and entanglements. Zhan spent a decade following practitioners, teachers, and advocates of Chinese medicine through clinics, hospitals, schools, and grassroots organizations in Shanghai and the San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing on that ethnographic research, she demonstrates that the everyday practice of Chinese medicine is about much more than writing herbal prescriptions and inserting acupuncture needles. “Traditional Chinese medicine” is also made and remade through efforts to create a preventive medicine for the “proletariat world,” reinvent it for cosmopolitan middle-class aspirations, produce clinical “miracles,” translate knowledge and authority, and negotiate marketing strategies and medical ethics.

Whether discussing the presentation of Chinese medicine at a health fair sponsored by a Silicon Valley corporation, or how the inclusion of a traditional Chinese medicine clinic authenticates the “California” appeal of an upscale residential neighborhood in Shanghai, Zhan emphasizes that unexpected encounters and interactions are not anomalies in the structure of Chinese medicine. Instead, they are constitutive of its irreducibly complex and open-ended worlds. Zhan proposes an ethnography of “worlding” as an analytic for engaging and illuminating emergent cultural processes such as those she describes. Rather than taking “cultural difference” as the starting point for anthropological inquiries, this analytic reveals how various terms of difference—for example, “traditional,” “Chinese,” and “medicine”—are invented, negotiated, and deployed translocally. Other-Worldly is a theoretically innovative and ethnographically rich account of the worlding of Chinese medicine.

Body and Nation: The Global Realm of U.S. Body Politics in the Twentieth Century (American Encounters/Global Interactions)From Duke Univ

Body and Nation interrogates the connections among the body, the nation, and the world in twentieth-century U.S. history. The idea that bodies and bodily characteristics are heavily freighted with values that are often linked to political and social spheres remains underdeveloped in the histories of America's relations with the rest of the world. Attentive to diverse state and nonstate actors, the contributors provide historically grounded insights into the transnational dimensions of biopolitics. Their subjects range from the regulation of prostitution in the Philippines by the U.S. Army to Cold War ideals of American feminine beauty, and from "body counts" as metrics of military success to cultural representations of Mexican migrants in the United States as public health threats. By considering bodies as complex, fluctuating, and interrelated sites of meaning, the contributors to this collection offer new insights into the workings of both soft and hard power.

Review
"This unusually synthetic and well-conceived volume covers historical and contemporary situations in which the bodies of civilians, combatants, and those defined as outsiders are managed, mobilized, and politically tethered to broad nationalist and imperial projects 'at home' and 'abroad.' In attending to the details of bodily care and coercion, the contributors ask why, how, and when bodies matter, demonstrating the blur between technologies of war and ever more sophisticated forms of peacetime surveillance. Taken together, their essays show that we need to know more about whose bodies count in the changing landscape of national security and imperial governance and in the embattled space between 'care' and 'control.'"

(Ann Laura Stoler, editor of Imperial Debris: On Ruins and Ruination 2014-03-12)

"This splendid collection will engage both scholars of American foreign policy and American studies. The essays are lively, pertinent, and very smart. They are a pleasure to read." (Daniel Walkowitz, coeditor of Contested Histories in Public Space: Memory, Race, and Nation)

“[O]n whole the volume succeeds well in pushing forward the idea of linking body and nation.” (Olaf Stieglitz H-Soz-Kult)

“Body and Nation is a valuable contribution to the history of the body and the ‘transnational and transactional dimensions of biopolitics’ (2).... Throughout their volume the included essays put forth a compelling portrait of the social construction of physical bodies and the ways they have ‘intertwined with projections of a U.S. National body’ (2).” (Amanda Regan Journal of Social History)

"[T]he essays are accessible and engaging, illuminating some lesser-known moments in the history of bodies and U.S. empire and revisiting some better-known ones. The book would work well for an undergraduate or graduate course, as it provides a useful introduction to this rich and still-undertheorized topic."  (Molly Geidel Journal of American History 2015-12-01)
