Often featuring lighthouses, bridges, or quaint country homes, Thomas Kinkade’s soft-focus landscapes have permeated American visual culture during the past twenty years, appearing on everything from Bibles to bedsheets to credit cards. Kinkade sells his work through his shopping-mall galleries, QVC, the Internet, and Christian stores. He is quite possibly the most collected artist in the United States. While many art-world and academic critics have dismissed him as a passing fad or marketing phenomenon, the contributors to this collection do not. Instead, they explore his work and its impact on contemporary art as part of the broader history of American visual culture. They consider Kinkade’s imagery and career in relation to nineteenth-century Currier and Ives prints and Andres Serrano’s Piss Christ, the collectibles market and the fine-art market, the Thomas Kinkade Museum and Cultural Center, and “The Village at Hiddenbrooke,” a California housing development inspired by Kinkade’s paintings. The conceptual artist Jeffrey Vallance, the curator of the first major museum exhibition of Kinkade’s art and collectibles, recounts his experiences organizing that show. All of the contributors draw on art history, visual culture, and cultural studies as they seek to understand Kinkade’s significance for both art and audiences. Along the way, they delve into questions about beauty, class, kitsch, religion, and taste in contemporary art.

Inherent Vice: Bootleg Histories of Videotape and Copyright, by Lucas Hilderbrand

In an age of digital technology and renewed anxiety about media piracy, Inherent Vice revisits the recent analog past with an eye-opening exploration of the aesthetic and legal innovations of home video. Analog videotape was introduced to consumers as a blank format, essentially as a bootleg technology, for recording television without permission. The studios initially resisted VCRs and began legal action to oppose their marketing. In turn, U.S. courts controversially reinterpreted copyright law to protect users’ right to record, while content owners eventually developed ways to exploit the video market. Lucas Hilderbrand shows how videotape and fair use offer essential lessons relevant to contemporary progressive media policy.

Videotape not only radically changed how audiences accessed the content they wanted and loved but also altered how they watched it. Hilderbrand develops an aesthetic theory of analog video, an “aesthetics of access” most boldly embodied by bootleg videos. He contends that the medium specificity of videotape becomes most apparent through repeated duplication, wear, and technical failure; video’s visible and audible degeneration signals its uses for legal transgressions and illicit pleasures. Bringing formal and cultural analysis into dialogue with industrial history and case law, Hilderbrand examines four decades of often overlooked histories of video recording, including the first network news archive, the underground circulation of Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, a feminist tape-sharing network, and the phenomenally popular website YouTube. This book reveals the creative uses of videotape that have made essential content more accessible and expanded our understanding of copyright law. It is a politically provocative, unabashedly nostalgic ode to analog.

The Culture of Japanese Fascism (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society)From Brand: Duke University Press Books

This bold collection of essays demonstrates the necessity of understanding fascism in cultural terms rather than only or even primarily in terms of political structures and events. Contributors from history, literature, film, art history, and anthropology describe a culture of fascism in Japan in the decades preceding the end of the Asia-Pacific War. In so doing, they challenge past scholarship, which has generally rejected descriptions of pre-1945 Japan as fascist. The contributors explain how a fascist ideology was diffused throughout Japanese culture via literature, popular culture, film, design, and everyday discourse. Alan Tansman’s introduction places the essays in historical context and situates them in relation to previous scholarly inquiries into the existence of fascism in Japan.

Several contributors examine how fascism was understood in the 1930s by, for example, influential theorists, an antifascist literary group, and leading intellectuals responding to capitalist modernization. Others explore the idea that fascism’s solution to alienation and exploitation lay in efforts to beautify work, the workplace, and everyday life. Still others analyze the realization of and limits to fascist aesthetics in film, memorial design, architecture, animal imagery, a military museum, and a national exposition. Contributors also assess both manifestations of and resistance to fascist ideology in the work of renowned authors including the Nobel-prize-winning novelist and short-story writer Kawabata Yasunari and the mystery writers Edogawa Ranpo and Hamao Shirō. In the work of these final two, the tropes of sexual perversity and paranoia open a new perspective on fascist culture. This volume makes Japanese fascism available as a critical point of comparison for scholars of fascism worldwide. The concluding essay models such work by comparing Spanish and Japanese fascisms.

The Oriental Obscene: Violence and Racial Fantasies in the Vietnam Era, by Sylvia Shin Huey Chong

The Oriental Obscene is a sophisticated analysis of Americans’ reactions to visual representations of the Vietnam War, such as the photograph of the “napalm girl,” news footage of the Tet Offensive, and feature films from The Deer Hunter to Rambo: First Blood Part II. Sylvia Shin Huey Chong combines psychoanalytic and film theories with U.S. cultural history to explain what she terms the oriental obscene: racialized fantasies that Americans derived largely from images of Asians as the perpetrators or victims of extreme violence. Chong contends that these fantasies helped Americans to process the trauma of the Vietnam War, as well as the growth of the Asian American population after the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 and the postwar immigration of Southeast Asian refugees. The oriental obscene animated a wide range of political narratives, not only the movements for and against the war, but causes as diverse as the Black Power movement, law-and-order conservatism, second-wave feminism, and the nascent Asian American movement. During the Vietnam era, pictures of Asian bodies were used to make sense of race, violence, and America’s identity at home and abroad.

Review
“The Oriental Obscene is fresh, original, scrupulously researched, and tightly argued. Sylvia Shin Huey Chong uses the psychoanalytic categories of trauma, the primal scene, and fantasy, relying centrally on the work of Jean Laplanche. She quite rightly contends that the theories of Laplanche and Deleuze can enrich each other, and she demonstrates how this works as she rethinks representations of the Vietnam War in visual media. Her book will attract a broad interdisciplinary audience, including scholars of film and media, cultural studies, Asian American studies, and critical race theory.”—Sharon Willis, author of High Contrast: Race and Gender in Contemporary Hollywood Film

“Sylvia Shin Huey Chong has located the Vietnam War as the constitutive trauma of modern American nationhood, one that is particularly attached to a visuality of violence. She argues, moreover, that this trauma also serves as something of a primal scene around which whole sets of gendered and racialized positions are generated and then solidified in the public spheres of American politics and sociality. The Oriental Obscene offers a fascinating read for anyone interested in the Vietnam War, American racial politics, popular culture, and the making and endurance of American Orientalism.”—Anne Anlin Cheng, Princeton University

“Chong makes an intriguing contribution to the scholarly conversation about Vietnam War imagery with her analysis of the rise in popularity of martial arts films in the US…” (Heather Stur Journal of American Studies)

“Taken in the context of scholarly investigations into representations of the Vietnam War, Chong’s work is a thoughtful and important contribution to the canon. However, as an exploration of otherness and the construction of racial identities, The Oriental Obscene also provides a valuable resource to broader areas of research in film and media theory, cultural studies and other critical approaches to race.” (Josh Nelson Screening the Past)

“Chong's enlightening, comprehensive study serves as an excellent addition to Asian American and media studies.... Highly recommended.” (A.F. Winstead Choice)

“This is an evocative study…. [A] masterful and courageous study in which the author weaves multiple theoretical strands into an integrated whole to pierce the pornographic undertones beneath the consumption of images of violence…. [T]here is no hint of exploitation or sensationalism, only a compelling argument for how the state can be imposed upon the human condition.” (Stella Coram Ethnic and Racial Studies)

“Chong has written a detailed and well-argued study of the portrayal of Asians in American media and society as a response to the Vietnam War. She takes the time to explain her use of sometimes difficult literary and psychoanalytical theory, making this text accessible to enthusiasts as well as academics.” (Patrick Condiffe Media International Australia)

“Chong’s book is a thoughtful consideration of complex, contradictory meanings in the visual archive of the Vietnam War. Her argument usefully delineates a cultural logic of race and the oriental from before and during its rescripting by the post-1965 generation of immigrants and Asian American cultural politics.” (Paul Lai Journal of Asian American Studies)

Airborne Dreams: “Nisei” Stewardesses and Pan American World Airways, by Christine R. Yano

In 1955 Pan American World Airways began recruiting Japanese American women to work as stewardesses on its Tokyo-bound flights and eventually its round-the-world flights as well. Based in Honolulu, these women were informally known as Pan Am’s “Nisei”—second-generation Japanese Americans—even though not all of them were Japanese American or second-generation. They were ostensibly hired for their Japanese-language skills, but few spoke Japanese fluently. This absorbing account of Pan Am’s “Nisei” stewardess program suggests that the Japanese American (and later other Asian and Asian American) stewardesses were meant to enhance the airline’s image of exotic cosmopolitanism and worldliness. As its corporate archives demonstrate, Pan Am marketed itself as an iconic American company pioneering new frontiers of race, language, and culture. Christine R. Yano juxtaposes the airline’s strategies and practices with the recollections of former “Nisei” flight attendants. In interviews with the author, these women proudly recall their experiences as young women who left home to travel the globe with Pan American World Airways, forging their own cosmopolitan identities in the process. Airborne Dreams is the story of an unusual personnel program implemented by an American corporation intent on expanding and dominating the nascent market for international air travel. That program reflected the Jet Age dreams of global mobility that excited postwar Americans, as well as the inequalities of gender, class, race, and ethnicity that constrained many of them.

"You Call it the World -- We Call it Home"
By takingadayoff
Pan American World Airways started a program in 1955 to recruit Japanese-American women to become stewardesses on their flights to Asia. Their official reason for recruiting "nisei" women was to acquire crew who could speak Japanese. The unofficial, but clearly stated, requirement, was that the women should look Asian and exotic. The head of Pan Am pulled no punches in his desire to see the stewardesses be "like Japanese geisha girls, prepared to flatter and entertain the male passengers."

Although the term "nisei" means second generation, many of the women were actually third or fourth generation Americans and knew little if any Japanese. The language requirement turned out to be a flexible one, and many of the women learned their Japanese on the fly, as it were.

Professor Christine R. Yano considers the Pan Am program in the context of 1955, only a decade after the end of World War II and the dismantling of Japanese internment camps on the American mainland. She notes that this was also the year that saw Rosa Parks and Emmett Till in the news, Ray Kroc opening his first McDonald's, Elvis Presley's career taking off, and James Dean's death.

While Pan Am capitalized on Asian exoticism to attract male passengers, the Japanese-American stewardesses were happy to take advantage of the opportunity to embark on glamorous careers and travel the world. The dozens of women that Yano interviewed were thrilled to have had the chance to break out of their circumscribed worlds and become something other than a teacher or a nurse, the principle occupations for young women who were college educated in the 1950s. Yano writes of trying to find disgruntled or dissatisfied former employees of Pan Am, but finding very few people who had other than positive things to say about the airline.

Yano's Airborne Dreams describes a pivotal time in race relations (Pan Am wouldn't hire their first black stewardesses until 1965 under pressure from the NAACP), the feminist movement, and the jet age. It's a bit academic at times, but entirely engaging. The excellent bibliography provides more ideas for further reading.

Border as Method, or, the Multiplication of Labor (a Social Text book), by Sandro Mezzadra, Brett Neilson

Far from creating a borderless world, contemporary globalization has generated a proliferation of borders. In Border as Method, Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson chart this proliferation, investigating its implications for migratory movements, capitalist transformations, and political life. They explore the atmospheric violence that surrounds borderlands and border struggles across various geographical scales, illustrating their theoretical arguments with illuminating case studies drawn from Europe, Asia, the Pacific, the Americas, and elsewhere. Mezzadra and Neilson approach the border not only as a research object but also as an epistemic framework. Their use of the border as method enables new perspectives on the crisis and transformations of the nation-state, as well as powerful reassessments of political concepts such as citizenship and sovereignty.

Review
"Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson illustrate the fecundity of the unity of opposites. Arriving from two extremities of the global world, using the border as a 'method,' they analyze how the antithetical patterns of 'border crossing' and 'border reinforcement' generate 'border struggles,' hence subjectivities, intelligibilities, commonalities. The threshold to justice is shifted, as are the articulations of violence and language that build a new humankind. The book asks not who we are, but who we become."—Étienne Balibar, author of Equaliberty: Political Essays

"Their sights set on global movements of labor—skilled or unskilled, legal or illegal—Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson mount the most ambitious attempt yet to leverage the idea of the border into a major theoretical tool for the study of global capital. They add a rich and powerful voice to contemporary debates on globalization."—Dipesh Chakrabarty, author of Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference

"This is an agenda-setting book that brings together issues of migration, labor, sovereignty, and the common into a coherent and powerful theoretical and political vision. By treating the border not as a site but as a method, Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson demonstrate both that borders are not isolated at the margins of social space but instead run through it, and that borders have become the privileged lens through which to view contemporary politics."—Michael Hardt, coauthor of the books Declaration, Commonwealth, Multitude, and Empire

“Against liberalism’s duplicitous dream of a universal political language, Border as Method explodes on the scene voraciously combining, re-inventing, pulling apart, putting together, layering, sifting and dissecting contemporary theories and knowledge of what our capitalist world is becoming and how we might change it.”  (Rogier van Reekum Krisis)

“This is a rich, conceptually rewarding work. It will be required reading for those making sense of the modern redefinition of borders, the forms of subjectivity that they create, and the diverse, innovative ways in which that subjectivity is resisted and redefined. Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduate, graduate, and research collections.”  (R. W. Glover Choice)

"An ambitious work of politically engaged social theory that attempts to reconceptualize issues of labor, migration, sovereignty, and governmentality." (Jeffrey Kahn PoLAR)

“For scholars and activists alike, this is a great book that offers a social theory of the border drawing from rich empirical, historical and theoretical work.” (Henrik Lebuhn International Journal of Urban and Regional Research 2015-06-01)

The Great Enterprise: Sovereignty and Historiography in Modern Korea (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society), by Henry H. Em

In The Great Enterprise, Henry H. Em examines how the project of national sovereignty shaped the work of Korean historians and their representations of Korea's past. The goal of Korea attaining validity and equal standing among sovereign nations, Em shows, was foundational to modern Korean politics in that it served a pedagogical function for Japanese and Western imperialisms, as well as for Korean nationalism. Sovereignty thus functioned as police power and political power in shaping Korea's modernity, including anticolonial and postcolonial movements toward a radically democratic politics.

Surveying historical works written over the course of the twentieth century, Em elucidates the influence of Christian missionaries, as well as the role that Japan's colonial policy played in determining the narrative framework for defining Korea's national past. Em goes on to analyze postcolonial works in which South Korean historians promoted national narratives appropriate for South Korea's place in the U.S.-led Cold War system. Throughout, Em highlights equal sovereignty's creative and productive potential to generate oppositional subjectivities and vital political alternatives.

The Privatization of Hope: Ernst Bloch and the Future of Utopia, SIC 8 ([sic] Series)From Duke University Press Books

The concept of hope is central to the work of the German philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885–1977), especially in his magnum opus, The Principle of Hope (1959). The "speculative materialism" that he first developed in the 1930s asserts a commitment to humanity's potential that continued through his later work. In The Privatization of Hope, leading thinkers in utopian studies explore the insights that Bloch's ideas provide in understanding the present. Mired in the excesses and disaffections of contemporary capitalist society, hope in the Blochian sense has become atomized, desocialized, and privatized. From myriad perspectives, the contributors clearly delineate the renewed value of Bloch's theories in this age of hopelessness. Bringing Bloch's "ontology of Not Yet Being" into conversation with twenty-first-century concerns, this collection is intended to help revive and revitalize philosophy's commitment to the generative force of hope.

Review
"Bloch . . . is one of the rare figures of whom we can say: fundamentally, with regard to what really matters, he was right, he remains our contemporary, and maybe he belongs even more to our time than to his own."—Slavoj Žižek, from the preface

"Late capitalism has been celebrated by its apologists as that stage of society in which nothing more, nothing new, will ever happen (except for wars, catastrophes, bankruptcy, and Armageddon): the end of history as the death of the future. In this affluent desolation, at the tail-end of all thought, we confront the immense enigmatic figure of Ernst Bloch and that tangle of the Not-Yet-Conceived—the heritage of unfinished business, loose ends, and tired aporias in which new problems are somewhere hidden, new futures slumber, and a freshening and a renewal of history is promised. The present collection makes a start on renewing Bloch himself as a living multiplicity of themes and questions, and may even mark a beginning of that new beginning with which he tantalized us."—Fredric Jameson, Duke University

“…like Bloch, contributions in this volume instil in the reader a sense that partisans are not obliged to consider contemporary states of affairs as perfected facts, as if facts amounted to the world’s completion. Instead we are guided by a transgressive thought to take up with renewed vigour Bloch’s insistence on the world’s being just as little finished as we are. . . . [T]his volume foretells of a much needed coming future engagement with Bloch.” (Nathaniel J P Barron Marx and Philosophy Review of Books)

"[T]he merit of this volume is that it approaches Bloch's thinking from very different perspectives, and often in an ingenious way." (Ivan Boldyrev Crisis and Critique)

“[T]his collection is persuasive that a return to Bloch’s writing, in spite of – or as Miller argues, perhaps precisely because of – its difficulty, is a worthwhile endeavour for anyone interested in reclaiming the utopian residues that lie beneath the ideological surface of cultural formations, perhaps in order to then understand how they might be put to work in ensuring that some human dreams for a better collective future do not remain mere fantasies.” (Marcus Morgan British Journal of Sociology)

Revolution in the Andes: The Age of Túpac Amaru (Latin America in Translation), by Sergio Serulnikov

Revolution in the Andes is an in-depth history of the Túpac Amaru insurrection, the largest and most threatening indigenous challenge to Spanish rule in the Andean world after the Conquest. Between 1780 and 1782, insurgent armies were organized throughout the Andean region. Some of the oldest and most populous cities in this region—including Cusco, La Paz, Puno, and Oruro—were besieged, assaulted, or occupied. Huge swaths of the countryside fell under control of the rebel forces. While essentially an indigenous movement, the rebellion sometimes attracted mestizo and Creole support for ousting the Spanish and restoring rule of the Andes to the land's ancestral owners. Sergio Serulnikov chronicles the uprisings and the ensuing war between rebel forces and royalist armies, emphasizing that the insurrection was comprised of several regional movements with varied ideological outlooks, social makeup, leadership structures, and expectations of change.

Review
"Revolution in the Andes is the best single account that I have read of the great uprisings led by Túpac Amaru and the other neo-Incan rebels. It is likely to become a much-read book among scholars of Latin America history, culture, and politics, especially Andeanists."—Orin Starn, author of Nightwatch: The Politics of Protest in the Andes

"In this outstanding book, Sergio Serulnikov, one of the foremost scholars of the late-colonial Andes, digests a large, multilingual historiography into a single cohesive narrative, framing the largest indigenous revolution of the New World after the Conquest for a wide audience. At the same time, he offers specialists provocative insights and attention to nuance, complexity, and local heterogeneity."—Jeremy Adelman, author of Republic of Capital: Buenos Aires and the Legal Transformation of the Atlantic World

“This well-written book is accessible for undergraduates while analytically rich enough to satisfy experts.”  (E. E. O’Connor Choice)

“Revolution in the Andesoffers us a fluid political narrative of events that is framed in wider structural context, sensitive to local dynamics, and penetrating in its analysis. It is written accessibly to engage a nonscholarly audience and is rendered into English with uncommon skill and elegance by translator David Frye. Ultimately, Serulnikov offers a new vision of how the political thinking and mobilization of Andean insurgents.” (Sinclair Thomson Hispanic American Historical Review)

“In this thin volume, Serulnikov manages to present an excellent overview of the insurrection as well as a nuanced discussion of regional and local variations. He references a large historiography dating from the 1950s to the present, and an array of archival material, including quotations from Túpac Amaru II and imperial officials.”

(Michael J. Gonzalez Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

"Geared to undergraduate and popular audiences, Revolution in the Andes features meticulous accounts of complex events in plain, lucid language." (Jason B. McClure Michigan War Studies Review 2014-10-01)

“Serulnikov succeeds admirably in encapsulating a chronologically and geographically coherent narrative of revolution from 1780 to 1782, which is easily accessible to readers with no prior knowledge.” (Marc Eagle History: Reviews of New Books)

Tango Lessons: Movement, Sound, Image, and Text in Contemporary PracticeFrom Duke University Press Books

From its earliest manifestations on the street corners of nineteenth-century Buenos Aires to its ascendancy as a global cultural form, tango has continually exceeded the confines of the dance floor or the music hall. In Tango Lessons, scholars from Latin America and the United States explore tango's enduring vitality. The interdisciplinary group of contributors—including specialists in dance, music, anthropology, linguistics, literature, film, and fine art—take up a broad range of topics. Among these are the productive tensions between tradition and experimentation in tango nuevo, representations of tango in film and contemporary art, and the role of tango in the imagination of Jorge Luis Borges. Taken together, the essays show that tango provides a kaleidoscopic perspective on Argentina's social, cultural, and intellectual history from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries.

Review
"Tango is unique in Argentine history. More than a national music and dance, it has been considered the defining icon of Buenos Aires and of Argentina's vibrant cultural history. Yet, despite its notoriety, scholarship on tango, especially in English, is surprisingly scant. Tango Lessons makes an important contribution by bringing together in one volume profoundly original essays investigating tango as a multifaceted cultural form."—Florencia Garramuño, author of Primitive Modernities: Tango, Samba, and Nation

"Until now, scholars have known little about the social, cultural, and economic aspects of contemporary tango. This collection brings tango scholarship up to date. Deeply involved in the contemporary tango scene, contributors convey a broad and timely appreciation of tango as a dance, a musical genre, a type of lyrical song, a historical archive, and a cultural form that is alive and evolving."—Arlene Dávila, author of Culture Works: Space, Value, and Mobility across the Neoliberal Americas

“This is a book to read carefully and to savor for each essay's distinctive take on the contemporary tango…. It is impossible in a brief review to do justice to such a varied collection of essays… [T]his is a solid and diverse collection, and the detailed and highly informative footnotes further embellish the essays. Even those readers who are well versed in tango history will learn a great deal from Tango Lessons.” (Deborah Jakubs Hispanic American Historical Review)
