The Children of 1965: On Writing, and Not Writing, as an Asian American, by Min Hyoung Song

Since the 1990s, a new cohort of Asian American writers has garnered critical and popular attention. Many of its members are the children of Asians who came to the United States after the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 lifted long-standing restrictions on immigration. This new generation encompasses writers as diverse as the graphic novelists Adrian Tomine and Gene Luen Yang, the short story writer Nam Le, and the poet Cathy Park Hong. Having scrutinized more than one hundred works by emerging Asian American authors and having interviewed several of these writers, Min Hyoung Song argues that collectively, these works push against existing ways of thinking about race, even as they demonstrate how race can facilitate creativity. Some of the writers eschew their identification as ethnic writers, while others embrace it as a means of tackling the uncertainty that many people feel about the near future. In the literature that they create, a number of the writers that Song discusses take on pressing contemporary matters such as demographic change, environmental catastrophe, and the widespread sense that the United States is in national decline.

Review
"In this work of celebration and criticism, Min Hyoung Song charts a new path forward for engaging the latest—and the most successful—wave of Asian American literature. In addition to offering some amazing literary criticism and analysis, Song interviews some of today's most important Asian American writers to discuss their work and life. The resulting book is in equal measure a stunning work of literary criticism and a fascinating social commentary on how Asian American literature is produced and read."—Edward J. W. Park, coauthor of Probationary Americans: Contemporary Immigration Policies and the Shaping of Asian American Communities

"Min Hyoung Song makes a persuasive case for a return to deep reading: the careful, loving attention to the literary text, couched within a social and political consciousness. He reminds us of the beauty to be found within the pages of the Asian American novel, short story, and poem, as well as of the brilliant testimony embedded in those works, evidence of the experiences of both the children of 1965 and their parents. Song's ambitious book not only surveys the growing field of contemporary Asian American literature, but is itself a milestone in Asian American literary history."—Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of Race and Resistance: Literature and Politics in Asian America

“Applying an impressive battery of data from social studies, Song deftly moves his argument toward a poststructuralist close reading...informed by an awareness that expectations based on the race of the author often creep into the unconscious of both writer and reader...Highly recommended.” (K.Liu Choice)

"Song's study is timely and valuable. Unfailingly engaging and generous, it places Asian American literature in a broader context and demonstrates how humanities scholars can take up the necessary task of explaining themselves to a broader public audience." (Yoon Sun Lee Journal of American Studies)

“[O]ffers a comprehensive assessment of important trends and critical concerns by a leading mind in the field, and charts a course for future inquiry. If we can imagine such a genre, it is a watershed book.” (Joseph Jonghyun Jeon Twentieth-Century Literature)

“[T]his book makes a valuable contribution to novel theory and should be of interest to readers intent on understanding how the big, ambitious novels of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century work.”  (Forum for Modern Language Studies)

“While The Children of 1965 leaves much to be admired, indeed, can be considered a tour de force of literary criticism, it is the conclusion that is especially powerful and is the payoff for reading the monograph. Reverting away from the academic third-person voice of the previous pages, the conclusion’s first-person musings challenge literary critics to make ourselves relevant to the field that we have spent years and decades studying.” (Jennifer Ho Journal of Asian American Studies 2015-10-01)

"[Song] lucidly weaves together appropriate invocations of criticism and theory with attentive and fine-grained exegesis of novels, short stories, and graphic novels, along with occasional author interviews he himself conducted." (Victor Bascara American Literary History 2015-12-15)

Reproducing the French Race: Immigration, Intimacy, and Embodiment in the Early Twentieth Century, by Elisa Camiscioli

In Reproducing the French Race, Elisa Camiscioli argues that immigration was a defining feature of early-twentieth-century France, and she examines the political, cultural, and social issues implicated in public debates about immigration and national identity at the time. Camiscioli demonstrates that mass immigration provided politicians, jurists, industrialists, racial theorists, feminists, and others with ample opportunity to explore questions of French racial belonging, France’s relationship to the colonial empire and the rest of Europe, and the connections between race and national anxieties regarding depopulation and degeneration. She also shows that discussions of the nation and its citizenry consistently returned to the body: its color and gender, its expenditure of labor power, its reproductive capacity, and its experience of desire. Of paramount importance was the question of which kinds of bodies could assimilate into the “French race.”

By focusing on telling aspects of the immigration debate, Camiscioli reveals how racial hierarchies were constructed, how gender figured in their creation, and how only white Europeans were cast as assimilable. Delving into pronatalist politics, she describes how potential immigrants were ranked according to their imagined capacity to adapt to the workplace and family life in France. She traces the links between racialized categories and concerns about industrial skills and output, and she examines medico-hygienic texts on interracial sex, connecting those to the crusade against prostitution and the related campaign to abolish “white slavery,” the alleged entrapment of (white) women for sale into prostitution abroad. Camiscioli also explores the debate surrounding the 1927 law that first made it possible for French women who married foreigners to keep their French nationality. She concludes by linking the Third Republic’s impulse to create racial hierarchies to the emergence of the Vichy regime.

Have I Reasons: Work and Writings, 1993–2007, by Robert Morris

Robert Morris, a leading figure in postwar American art, is best known as a pioneer of minimalist sculpture, process art, and earthworks. Yet Morris has resisted affiliation with any one movement or style. An extraordinarily versatile artist, he has produced dances, performance pieces, prints, paintings, drawings, and installations, working with materials including plywood, felt, dirt, aluminum, steel mesh, fiberglass, and encaustic. Throughout his career, Morris has written influential critical essays, commenting on his own work as well as that of other artists, and exploring through text many of the theoretical concerns addressed in his artwork—about perception, materiality, space, and the process of artmaking. Have I Reasons presents seventeen of Morris’s essays, six of which have never been published before. Written over the past fifteen years, the essays, along with the volume’s many illustrations, provide an invaluable record of the recent thought of a major American artist.

The writings are arranged chronologically, beginning with “Indiana Street,” a vivid autobiographical account of the artist’s early years in Kansas City, Missouri. Have I Reasons includes reflections on Morris’s own site-specific installations; transcripts of seminars he conducted in conjunction with exhibitions; and the textual element of The Birthday Boy, the two-screen video-and-sound piece he installed at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy, on the occasion of the five hundredth anniversary of Michelangelo’s David. Essays range from original interpretations of Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire paintings and Jasper Johns’ early work to engagements with one of Morris’s most significant interlocutors, the philosopher Donald Davidson. Have I Reasons conveys not only Morris’s enduring deep interest in philosophy and issues of resemblance and representation but also his more recent turn toward directly addressing contemporary social and political issues such as corporate excess and preemptive belligerence.

Imperial Debris: On Ruins and RuinationFrom Duke University Press Books

Imperial Debris redirects critical focus from ruins as evidence of the past to "ruination" as the processes through which imperial power occupies the present. Ann Laura Stoler's introduction is a manifesto, a compelling call for postcolonial studies to expand its analytical scope to address the toxic but less perceptible corrosions and violent accruals of colonial aftermaths, as well as their durable traces on the material environment and people's bodies and minds. In their provocative, tightly focused responses to Stoler, the contributors explore subjects as seemingly diverse as villages submerged during the building of a massive dam in southern India, Palestinian children taught to envision and document ancestral homes razed by the Israeli military, and survival on the toxic edges of oil refineries and amid the remains of apartheid in Durban, South Africa. They consider the significance of Cold War imagery of a United States decimated by nuclear blast, perceptions of a swath of Argentina's Gran Chaco as a barbarous void, and the enduring resonance, in contemporary sexual violence, of atrocities in King Leopold's Congo. Reflecting on the physical destruction of Sri Lanka, on Detroit as a colonial metropole in relation to sites of ruination in the Amazon, and on interactions near a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Brazilian state of Bahia, the contributors attend to present-day harms in the occluded, unexpected sites and situations where earlier imperial formations persist.

Review
"Imperial Debris questions some of our deepest assumptions about violence and its residues. This astute, wide-ranging, and ambitious volume refocuses our attention on the incremental processes of ruination that are typically overlooked in favor of official ruins. The result is a major intervention in postcolonial and visual studies."—Rob Nixon, author of Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor

"Barely controlled rage is never far offstage as we are drawn into the continuing drama of empire's ruins—scarred landscapes, polluted places, shattered peoples, and the rot that remains. From sadistic torture and ruination of bodies and souls in the (Belgian) Congo to the lives of Sri Lankan 'coolie' estate workers analyzed in epic poetry, from the state’s attempt to patrimonialize impoverished citizens in contemporary Bahia to Israeli destruction of Palestinian homes and spirits in Gaza, this book forces a new, critical gaze on the ways that colonialism lives on in the present."—Richard Price, author of The Convict and the Colonel, Travels with Tooy, and Rainforest Warriors

“The contributors analyze enduring ‘rot’ and ‘debris’ in a variety of global settings . . . . Highly recommended. University collections, all levels.” (P. C. Naylor Choice)

Dying Modern: A Meditation on Elegy, by Diana Fuss

In Dying Modern, one of our foremost literary critics inspires new ways to read, write, and talk about poetry. Diana Fuss does so by identifying three distinct but largely unrecognized voices within the well-studied genre of the elegy: the dying voice, the reviving voice, and the surviving voice. Through her deft readings of modern poetry, Fuss unveils the dramatic within the elegiac: the dying diva who relishes a great deathbed scene, the speaking corpse who fancies a good haunting, and the departing lover who delights in a dramatic exit.

Focusing primarily on American and British poetry written during the past two centuries, Fuss maintains that poetry can still offer genuine ethical compensation, even for the deep wounds and shocking banalities of modern death. As dying, loss, and grief become ever more thoroughly obscured from public view, the dead start chattering away in verse. Through bold, original interpretations of little-known works, as well as canonical poems by writers such as Emily Dickinson, Randall Jarrell, Elizabeth Bishop, Richard Wright, and Sylvia Plath, Fuss explores modern poetry's fascination with pre- and postmortem speech, pondering the literary desire to make death speak in the face of its cultural silencing.

Theory AsideFrom Duke University Press Books

Where can theory go now? Where other voices concern themselves with theory's life or death, the contributors to Theory Aside take up another possibility: that our theoretical prospects are better served worrying less about "what’s next?" and more about "what else?" Instead of looking for the next big thing, the fourteen prominent thinkers in this volume take up lines of thought lost or overlooked during theory's canonization. They demonstrate that intellectual progress need not depend on the discovery of a new theorist or theory. Moving subtly through a diverse range of thinkers and topics—aesthetics, affect, animation and film studies, bibliography, cognitive science, globalization, phenomenology, poetics, political and postcolonial theory, race and identity, queer theory, and sociological reading practices—the contributors show that a more sustained, less apocalyptic attention to ideas might lead to a richer discussion of our intellectual landscapes and the place of the humanities and social sciences in it. In their turn away from the radically new, these essays reveal that what’s fallen aside still surprises.

Review
"Theory Aside is filled with surprising analytic moves that feel absolutely necessary. The contributors seek the undetonated futures of past and current theoretical paradigms, stepping to the side of where we think we've been to open up new ways of thinking. Their essays are distinguished by a probing, lucid quality that makes them a real pleasure to read." (Elizabeth Freeman author of Time Binds: Queer Temporalities, Queer Histories)

"Theory Aside is a terrific collection, its argument highly cogent and its organization luminously clear. As the editors realize, it is ironic that some will find brand new their claim that critical theory might have had a different history, a history that the essays in this volume reimagine in a variety of engaging ways. If something newly important can be said today about Theory's future as well as its past, Theory Aside will surely be the volume that catalyzes this discussion." (Andrew Parker, author of The Theorist's Mother)

“This insightful collection of essays regarding the use and place of theory in a post-theoretical realm dares to imagine how theory may successfully challenge and illuminate understanding of the world. . . . Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty.”  (S. Batcos Choice)

"Potts and Stout call for a more ‘modest’ critical practice that gives attention to previously neglected thinkers and considers how theory might have developed in different ways....[The book's] approach disciplines including gender studies, film, poetics and postcolonial studies from surprising, and often enlightening, perspectives." (Forum for Modern Language Studies)

Workshop of Revolution: Plebeian Buenos Aires and the Atlantic World, 1776–1810, by Lyman L. Johnson

The plebeians of Buenos Aires were crucial to the success of the revolutionary junta of May 1810, widely considered the start of the Argentine war of independence. Workshop of Revolution is a historical account of the economic and political forces that propelled the artisans, free laborers, and slaves of Buenos Aires into the struggle for independence. Drawing on extensive archival research in Argentina and Spain, Lyman L. Johnson portrays the daily lives of Buenos Aires plebeians in unprecedented detail. In so doing, he demonstrates that the world of Spanish colonial plebeians can be recovered in reliable and illuminating ways. Johnson analyzes the demographic and social contexts of plebeian political formation and action, considering race, ethnicity, and urban population growth, as well as the realms of work and leisure. During the two decades prior to 1810, Buenos Aires came to be thoroughly integrated into Atlantic commerce. Increased flows of immigrants from Spain and slaves from Africa and Brazil led to a decline in real wages and the collapse of traditional guilds. Laborers and artisans joined militias that defended the city against British invasions in 1806 and 1807, and they defeated a Spanish loyalist coup attempt in 1809. A gravely weakened Spanish colonial administration and a militarized urban population led inexorably to the events of 1810 and a political transformation of unforeseen scale and consequence.

Review
“Workshop of Revolution is an extremely well-researched, pathbreaking book, which makes new and substantial contributions to Latin American, working-class, and Atlantic history. Presenting an immense wealth of new archival material, Lyman L. Johnson not only respectfully and meticulously re-creates the lives and times of artisans in late-colonial Argentina, but also connects their lives to the wider society, broad imperial issues such as the slave trade, and the revolutionary forces emerging in the Atlantic world.”—Kenneth J. Andrien, author of Andean Worlds: Indigenous History, Culture, and Consciousness under Spanish Rule, 1532–1825

“This important book presents a completely new interpretation of Argentina’s independence era. Lyman L. Johnson uses Buenos Aires artisans as an entryway into the war of independence, depicting both the lower classes of Buenos Aires and the city itself with sensitivity and intelligence. It should be noted that Workshop of Revolution is a fine urban history.”—Charles F. Walker, author of Shaky Colonialism: The 1746 Earthquake-Tsunami in Lima, Peru, and Its Long Aftermath

“[I]n Workshop of Revolution Johnson exhibits a mastery of late-colonial archival sources and the deep, thoughtful analysis of a veteran historian. This important addition to the history of pre-independence Buenos Aires succeeds at expertly situating a traditional microstudy of urban laborers within the larger trends of Atlantic history.... Workshop of Revolution contributes to the history of race and class in colonial Spanish America, persuasively showing how workers were important and complex actors — albeit a class divided on the eve of independence.” (Edward P. Pompeian Labor)

“Workshop of Revolution is an outstanding book. Its solid research, insightful analysis and excellent comparative perspectives make it mandatory reading for anyone interested in topics related to late colonial history, Atlantic history, social and economic history, and early independent Argentine and Latin American history.” (Jorge Nállim Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History)

“[A] major contribution by one of the field’s best historians. . . . Highly recommended.” (K. L. Racine Choice)

“In this superbly written work, Professor Johnson presents a book that successfully integrates Latin American and Atlantic history through the examination of the plebeians in Buenos Aires during the last decades of colonial rule in the Americas. This work goes beyond social history; it illuminates rich aspects of the urban history, daily life, gender, and political history of Buenos Aires, always connected to the broader Atlantic context. …This work is an important contribution for debates on decolonisation and state formation, and it will capture the interest of scholars of other regions of Latin America, from Mexico to Brazil. The book constitutes a good reading for graduate seminars, as well as many chapters that could be assigned for undergraduate courses.”
(Fabricio Prado Itinerario)

“Lyman Johnson’s valedictory study of plebeian labor and politics in late colonial Buenos Aires is a masterwork of social and political history…. His work is a landmark study that will critically inform future work on colonial popular politics and social history.” (James E. Sanders The Americas)

“I praise his book, for Johnson offers tantalizingly novel perspectives on long-lasting historiographical puzzles. Methodology and sources often get in the way of most scholars' visions, when in fact they ought to be means in order to answer questions…. Johnson show that in-depth local history can alter our understanding of much larger processes.” (Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra Latin American Research Review)

"An extraordinarily close look at every aspect of the life of artisans and laborers in Buenos Aires, from types of dwellings and shop culture to forms of leisure and sociability." (Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra Latin American Research Review)
