The Indonesia Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The World Readers)From Duke University Press Books

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, encompassing nearly eighteen thousand islands. The fourth-most populous nation in the world, it has a larger Muslim population than any other. The Indonesia Reader is a unique introduction to this extraordinary country. Assembled for the traveler, student, and expert alike, the Reader includes more than 150 selections: journalists’ articles, explorers’ chronicles, photographs, poetry, stories, cartoons, drawings, letters, speeches, and more. Many pieces are by Indonesians; some are translated into English for the first time. All have introductions by the volume’s editors. Well-known figures such as Indonesia’s acclaimed novelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer and the American anthropologist Clifford Geertz are featured alongside other artists and scholars, as well as politicians, revolutionaries, colonists, scientists, and activists.

Organized chronologically, the volume addresses early Indonesian civilizations; contact with traders from India, China, and the Arab Middle East; and the European colonization of Indonesia, which culminated in centuries of Dutch rule. Selections offer insight into Japan’s occupation (1942–45), the establishment of an independent Indonesia, and the post-independence era, from Sukarno’s presidency (1945–67), through Suharto’s dictatorial regime (1967–98), to the present Reformasi period. Themes of resistance and activism recur: in a book excerpt decrying the exploitation of Java’s natural wealth by the Dutch; in the writing of Raden Ajeng Kartini (1879–1904), a Javanese princess considered the icon of Indonesian feminism; in a 1978 statement from East Timor objecting to annexation by Indonesia; and in an essay by the founder of Indonesia’s first gay activist group. From fifth-century Sanskrit inscriptions in stone to selections related to the 2002 Bali bombings and the 2004 tsunami, The Indonesia Reader conveys the long history and the cultural, ethnic, and ecological diversity of this far-flung archipelago nation.

The Paraguay Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The Latin America Readers)From Duke University Press Books

Hemmed in by the vast, arid Chaco to the west and, for most of its history, impenetrable jungles to the east, Paraguay has been defined largely by its isolation. Partly as a result, there has been a dearth of serious scholarship or journalism about the country. Going a long way toward redressing this lack of information and analysis, The Paraguay Reader is a lively compilation of testimonies, journalism, scholarship, political tracts, literature, and illustrations, including maps, photographs, paintings, drawings, and advertisements. Taken together, the anthology's many selections convey the country's extraordinarily rich history and cultural heritage, as well as the realities of its struggles against underdevelopment, foreign intervention, poverty, inequality, and authoritarianism.

Most of the Reader is arranged chronologically. Weighted toward the twentieth century and early twenty-first, it nevertheless gives due attention to major events in Paraguay's history, such as the Triple Alliance War (1864–70) and the Chaco War (1932–35). The Reader's final section, focused on national identity and culture, addresses matters including ethnicity, language, and gender. Most of the selections are by Paraguayans, and many of the pieces appear in English for the first time. Helpful introductions by the editors precede each of the book's sections and all of the selected texts.

Writing in the Air: Heterogeneity and the Persistence of Oral Tradition in Andean Literatures, by Antonio Cornejo Polar

Originally published in 1994, Writing in the Air is one of the most significant books of modern Latin American literary and cultural criticism. In this seminal work, the influential Latin American literary critic Antonio Cornejo Polar offers the most extended articulation of his efforts to displace notions of hybridity or "mestizaje" dominant in Latin American cultural studies with the concept of heterogeneity: the persistent interaction of cultural difference that cannot be resolved in synthesis. He reexamines encounters between Spanish and indigenous Andean cultural systems in the New World from the Conquest into the 1980s. Through innovative readings of narratives of conquest and liberation, homogenizing nineteenth- and twentieth-century discourses, and contemporary Andean literature, he rejects the dominance of the written word over oral literature. Cornejo Polar decenters literature as the primary marker of Latin American cultural identity, emphasizing instead the interlacing of multiple narratives that generates the heterogeneity of contemporary Latin American culture.

Review
"Writing in the Air marks the beginning of a major shift in the conception of Latin American literature and culture. Antonio Cornejo Polar questioned the implicit equation of modernity/modernization, transculturation, literature, and the formation of the modern Latin American nation-state. The incorporation by the current governments of Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru of strong, multicultural elements is related to the cultural paradigm elaborated in Writing in the Air. Cornejo Polar's arguments remain fresh and suggestive, and they are done justice in this excellent translation."—John Beverley, author of Latinamericanism after 9/11

"In his last, indispensable book, the great Antonio Cornejo Polar takes readers on a fascinating journey through the plural worlds of Andean culture. This classic text, finally available in English, proves yet again why the author is widely considered a scholar who revolutionized Latin American literary criticism, providing an incisive interpretation of how Perú—and the rest of the continent—expresses itself with glorious complexity in its most significant works of the imagination."—Ariel Dorfman, author of Feeding on Dreams: Confessions of an Unrepentant Exile

"For cultural critics and theorists who read only English, Writing in the Air will have a special value, as each chapter (dealing with a major problem in the cultural formation of Latin America) benefits from the perspective that an extremely well-read and well-versed critic brings to the formulation of the problematic at hand. The prose is clear, the thinking has been slimmed down, the focus is unyielding, and the translator has done a very good job." (Sara Castro-Klaren Critical Inquiry)

"This attractive English edition of Cornejo Polar’s masterful excursion into Andean heterogeneity is a charter for investigating verbal discourse as a reflector and driver of history and its cultural formations."  (John Holmes McDowell Anthropological Linquistics)

"Writing in the Air reoriented and revitalized Latin American literary scholarship.... [T]he translator skillfully renders Cornejo Polar’s sometimes complex ideas in a rich prose that is pleasant to read. Indeed, this translation will be very important for scholars who work in comparative or Anglo-American literature and who, otherwise, would not have the linguistic tools to read works written by Latin American or Latino authors.... It will also be a useful tool for undergraduate students beginning their careers as Spanish, comparative literature, or Latin American studies majors. For those cohort groups, it should be considered a must-have item."  (Thomas Ward Hispania)

"A book this important merits a skillful presentation to the English speaking world, and Lynda J. Jentsch has produced a translation reflecting the high standards and innovative vision of its author. Jean Franco's incisive and thoughtful preface gives important perspectives on this book in its Latin American context."  (Gwen Kirpatrick Review:Literature and Arts of the Americas)

"There is something so immense and wonderful in Cornejo Polar’s vision that, ultimately, it exceeds the bounds of his writing." (Katie Dimmery Journal of Folklore Research 2015-12-08)

Buying into the Regime: Grapes and Consumption in Cold War Chile and the United States (American Encounters/Global Interactions), by Heidi

Buying into the Regime is a transnational history of how Chilean grapes created new forms of consumption and labor politics in both the United States and Chile. After seizing power in 1973, Augusto Pinochet embraced neoliberalism, transforming Chile’s economy. The country became the world's leading grape exporter. Heidi Tinsman traces the rise of Chile's fruit industry, examining how income from grape production enabled fruit workers, many of whom were women, to buy the commodities—appliances, clothing, cosmetics—flowing into Chile, and how this new consumerism influenced gender relations, as well as pro-democracy movements. Back in the United States, Chilean and U.S. businessmen aggressively marketed grapes as a wholesome snack. At the same time, the United Farm Workers and Chilean solidarity activists led parallel boycotts highlighting the use of pesticides and exploitation of labor in grape production. By the early-twenty-first century, Americans may have been better informed, but they were eating more grapes than ever.

Review
"Buying into the Regime is a pathbreaking study of gender, labor, and consumption in Chile and the United States. Heidi Tinsman masterfully integrates U.S. and Latin American history. Her book is not only a major contribution to Chilean history, it should also be required reading for U.S. historians and their graduate students. I anticipate that it will work beautifully in undergraduate courses as well."—Julie Greene, author of The Canal Builders: Making America's Empire at the Panama Canal

"Linking production, consumption, and social conflict in grape production in California and Chile, Heidi Tinsman traces historical connections and interesting disconnects between the industries and social movements in both countries. United Farm Worker support for undocumented workers in California did not expand into an internationalist consciousness, while the anticonsumerism of anti-Pinochet activists overlooked the contradictory combination of empowerment and exploitation experienced by female fruit workers. A fascinating example of the benefits of a transnational approach."—Florencia E. Mallon, editor of Decolonizing Native Histories: Collaboration, Knowledge, and Language in the Americas

“Buying into the Regime is a fascinating history of grapes and consumption during the Cold War, focusing specifically on the close relationship between the United States and Chile….That the book consciously avoids simple answers makes it an especially welcome addition to the literature on the Cold War in Chile.” (Gregory Weeks The Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

"An exceptionally rich work that will undoubtedlybbecome a staple of graduate-level food, labor, and gender courses for years to come."  (Bartow J. Elmore Journal of American History)

"In this compelling work, Heidi Tinsman has opened up new ways to conceptualize transnationalism in history.... with Tinsman’s insights in hand, contemporary movement organizers can hope to avoid some of the mistakes of their predecessors." (Eileen Findlay Hispanic American Historical Review)

"Based on extensive field work and impressive archival research, Buying into the Regime is a creative history of the Chilean grape and fruit industry and its relations to U.S. institutions, markets, and politics from the 1920s into the twenty-first century."  (Brian Loveman American Historical Review)

“[A] brilliant and idiosyncratic addition to the burgeoning literature of commodity history…. Tinsman has written a sweeping and provocative book that encourages us to reframe our views of Chilean and US history.” (Jason M. Colby Canadian Journal of History)

"A wonderful model of rethinking imperial models of history and a rich analysis of how working people themselves, across vast distances, have taken on the challenges of promoting democracy within the deeply interwoven webs of global power." (Dana Frank Labor Studies in Working-Class Histories of the Americas)

"I wholeheartedly recommend this book to those interested in comparative Latin American and US history, social movements, and rural and gender studies." (Christobal Kay Journal of Latin American Studies)

“Nonspecialists, graduate students, and undergraduates will read this important book easily and with enthusiasm. Specialists in Chilean, Latin American, US, labor, gender, and transnational history will agree that Buying into the Regime is on the cutting edge of historical research. It is a brilliant example of linking local actors to larger historical processes, both within national borders and beyond them.” (Brandi A. Townsend History: Reviews of New Books)

A beautifully written history for our time
By Jon Wiener
The story behind the grapes in our supermarkets in winter is rich and signifcant as Heidi Tinsman tells it. This beautifully written history is a study of many things: the Chilean women who pack the grapes for American consumers, the changes that the grape industry brought to relations between men and women in Chile, the marketing of grapes to Americans as healthy snack food, and the politics behind all of this. Tinsman knows all about Chile, and knows how to write a wonderful book.

Black Arts West: Culture and Struggle in Postwar Los Angeles, by Daniel Widener

From postwar efforts to end discrimination in the motion-picture industry, recording studios, and musicians’ unions, through the development of community-based arts organizations, to the creation of searing films critiquing conditions in the black working class neighborhoods of a city touting its multiculturalism—Black Arts West documents the social and political significance of African American arts activity in Los Angeles between the Second World War and the riots of 1992. Focusing on the lives and work of black writers, visual artists, musicians, and filmmakers, Daniel Widener tells how black cultural politics changed over time, and how altered political realities generated new forms of artistic and cultural expression. His narrative is filled with figures invested in the politics of black art and culture in postwar Los Angeles, including not only African American artists but also black nationalists, affluent liberal whites, elected officials, and federal bureaucrats.

Along with the politicization of black culture, Widener explores the rise of a distinctive regional Black Arts Movement. Originating in the efforts of wartime cultural activists, the movement was rooted in the black working class and characterized by struggles for artistic autonomy and improved living and working conditions for local black artists. As new ideas concerning art, racial identity, and the institutional position of African American artists emerged, dozens of new collectives appeared, from the Watts Writers Workshop, to the Inner City Cultural Center, to the New Art Jazz Ensemble. Spread across generations of artists, the Black Arts Movement in Southern California was more than the artistic affiliate of the local civil-rights or black-power efforts: it was a social movement itself. Illuminating the fundamental connections between expressive culture and political struggle, Black Arts West is a major contribution to the histories of Los Angeles, black radicalism, and avant-garde art.

Black and Green: Afro-Colombians, Development, and Nature in the Pacific Lowlands, by Kiran Asher

In Black and Green, Kiran Asher provides a powerful framework for reconceptualizing the relationship between neoliberal development and social movements. Moving beyond the notion that development is a hegemonic, homogenizing force that victimizes local communities, Asher argues that development processes and social movements shape each other in uneven and paradoxical ways. She bases her argument on ethnographic analysis of the black social movements that emerged from and interacted with political and economic changes in Colombia’s Pacific lowlands, or Chocó region, in the 1990s.

The Pacific region had yet to be overrun by drug traffickers, guerrillas, and paramilitary forces in the early 1990s. It was better known as the largest area of black culture in the country (90 percent of the region’s population is Afro-Colombian) and as a supplier of natural resources, including timber, gold, platinum, and silver. Colombia’s Law 70, passed in 1993, promised ethnic and cultural rights, collective land ownership, and socioeconomic development to Afro-Colombian communities. At the same time that various constituencies sought to interpret and implement Law 70, the state was moving ahead with large-scale development initiatives intended to modernize the economically backward coastal lowlands. Meanwhile national and international conservation organizations were attempting to protect the region’s rich biodiversity. Asher explores this juxtaposition of black rights, economic development, and conservation—and the tensions it catalyzed. She analyzes the meanings attached to “culture,” “nature,” and “development” by the Colombian state and Afro-Colombian social movements, including women’s groups. In so doing, she shows that the appropriation of development and conservation discourses by the social movements had a paradoxical effect. It legitimized the presence of state, development, and conservation agencies in the Pacific region even as it influenced those agencies’ visions and plans.

Modern Tibetan Literature and Social ChangeFrom Brand: Duke University Press Books

Modern Tibetan Literature and Social Change is the first systematic and detailed overview of modern Tibetan literature, which has burgeoned only in the last thirty years. This comprehensive collection brings together fourteen pioneering scholars in the nascent field of Tibetan literary studies, including authors who are active in the Tibetan literary world itself. These scholars examine the literary output of Tibetan authors writing in Tibetan, Chinese, and English, both in Tibet and in the Tibetan diaspora.

The contributors explore the circumstances that led to the development of modern Tibetan literature, its continuities and breaks with classical Tibetan literary forms, and the ways that writers use forms such as magical realism, satire, and humor to negotiate literary freedom within the People’s Republic of China. They provide crucial information about Tibetan writers’ lives in China and abroad, the social and political contexts in which they write, and the literary merits of their oeuvre. Along with deep social, cultural, and political analysis, this wealth of information clarifies the complex circumstances that Tibetan writers face in the PRC and the diaspora. The contributors consider not only poetry, short stories, and novels but also other forms of cultural production—such as literary magazines, films, and Web sites—that provide a public forum in the Tibetan areas of the PRC, where censorship and restrictions on public gatherings remain the norm. Modern Tibetan Literature and Social Change includes a previously unavailable list of modern Tibetan works translated into Western languages and a comprehensive English-language index of names, subjects, and terms.

Talking to the Dead: Religion, Music, and Lived Memory among Gullah/Geechee Women, by LeRhonda S. Manigault-Bryant

Talking to the Dead is an ethnography of seven Gullah/Geechee women from the South Carolina lowcountry. These women communicate with their ancestors through dreams, prayer, and visions and traditional crafts and customs, such as storytelling, basket making, and ecstatic singing in their churches. Like other Gullah/Geechee women of the South Carolina and Georgia coasts, these women, through their active communication with the deceased, make choices and receive guidance about how to live out their faith and engage with the living. LeRhonda S. Manigault-Bryant emphasizes that this communication affirms the women's spiritual faith—which seamlessly integrates Christian and folk traditions—and reinforces their position as powerful culture keepers within Gullah/Geechee society. By looking in depth at this long-standing spiritual practice, Manigault-Bryant highlights the subversive ingenuity that lowcountry inhabitants use to thrive spiritually and to maintain a sense of continuity with the past.

Review
"LeRhonda S. Manigault-Bryant has produced a masterful work of scholarship that not only provides a unique analysis of 'lived' history and religion in the lives of contemporary African American women but also bears witness to the power of human creativity, expressed through imagination, memory, and performance. By crafting such an adept narrative, Manigault-Bryant draws the reader into a compelling story that balances her subjective experiences with a new and productive methodological approach." (Yvonne P. Chireau, author of Black Magic: Religion and the African American Conjuring Tradition)

"An interesting ethnography that is in conversation with other studies on Gullah culture, Talking to the Dead goes beyond previous scholarship by highlighting the spirituality of contemporary Gullah women." (Margaret Washington, author of Sojourner Truth's America)

"Talking to the Dead is an incredibly rich study, which will reward both a general readership and readers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds." (Teresa Zackodnik Feminist Review 2015-11-10)

"LeRhonda Manigault-Bryant’s Talking to the Dead is well suited for the novice who is unaware of any of the traditions and religious practices of the Gullah/Geechee.... Because of its emphasis on black women, the ethnography also has much to offer to the black feminist or black womanist scholar, especially one with an interest in African Diasporic culture or African derivative belief systems." (Constance Bailey Western Folklore 2016-02-23)

"While talking to the dead, as well as other less ‘flashy’ Gullah/Geechee practices risk being lost in application, Manigault-Bryant and other third generation scholars have ensured they will not be completely erased through an increasingly sophisticated historiography accounting for the diverse perspectives of African American women in the South Carolina lowcountry." (Douglas R. Valentine Religion 2016-08-17)

A View from the Bottom: Asian American Masculinity and Sexual Representation (Perverse Modernities: A Series Edited

A View from the Bottom offers a major critical reassessment of male effeminacy and its racialization in visual culture. Examining portrayals of Asian and Asian American men in Hollywood cinema, European art film, gay pornography, and experimental documentary, Nguyen Tan Hoang explores the cultural meanings that accrue to sexual positions. He shows how cultural fantasies around the position of the sexual "bottom" overdetermine and refract the meanings of race, gender, sexuality, and nationality in American culture in ways that both enable and constrain Asian masculinity. Challenging the association of bottoming with passivity and abjection, Nguyen suggests ways of thinking about the bottom position that afford agency and pleasure. A more capacious conception of bottomhood—as a sexual position, a social alliance, an affective bond, and an aesthetic form—has the potential to destabilize sexual, gender, and racial norms, suggesting an ethical mode of relation organized not around dominance and mastery but around the risk of vulnerability and shame. Thus reconceived, bottomhood as a critical category creates new possibilities for arousal, receptiveness, and recognition, and offers a new framework for analyzing sexual representations in cinema as well as understanding their relation to oppositional political projects.

Review
"Nguyen Tan Hoang's exciting book is a compelling account of the aesthetic, political, and queer possibilities of racialized forms of 'bottomhood.' As someone who has been writing about masochism and passivity in relation to queer feminisms for a while, I realize that this is the book I have needed in sorting through the complex forms of personhood, pleasure, and power that bottomhood braids into the meanings of race, nation, and sexuality." (Jack Halberstam, author of The Queer Art of Failure 2014-01-23)

"Artist-scholar Nguyen Tan Hoang's dexterous unpacking of a Hollywood classic, the oeuvre of a gay Asian American porn star, an international art house film, videos by gay Asian artists and the self-representation of online sex sites challenged me to radically rethink the terms and stakes for reconsidering the representation of Asian American masculinity. A profoundly insightful and provocative book." (Richard Fung 2014-01-27)

"Little or none of the scholarship around the sexual position of the bottom has accurately articulated it as a sexual practice with the capacity to rewrite both shame and vulnerability... [Nguyen] sets himself a part from today’s contemporary queer canon of scholars." (John Erickson Lambda Literary Review)

“Using tools not of the master's house, Nguyen offers a pioneering study of Asian American gender and sexuality with reverberating tools that transform our theory and praxis.” (Margaret Rhee Amerasia Journal)

"Communication researchers who are interested in critical racial studies, cultural studies, and queer theory should find [A View from the Bottom] relevant and inspiring." (Lik Sam Chan International Journal of Communication)

"The book is written with nuance and theoretical sophistication, in a clear and lively style that is at once personable and playful.... A View from the Bottom is certainly well positioned to provoke new conversations—even realignments of boundary—between gay studies and trans studies." (Helen Hok-Sze Leung TSQ 2016-05-01)

"A View from the Bottom... provokes a political recalibration that aligns bottomhood, femininity, and race in tender union.... Nguyen bravely models a praxis of vulnerability that we rarely encounter in academic writing, especially around the fraught and fragile imbrications of race, desire, and power" (Uri McMillan GLQ 2016-06-01)

Erudite and challenging to White male sexual hegemony
By Adam
"Although the portrayal of Asians in American films is not a sustained interest of mine, I found the book interesting in several unexpected ways. I was first impressed by the author's erudite and profound skill with language, appropriate for an intensely academic work. His selection of a few films to analyze in detail is beyond my power to evaluate, but I take it that the selection was meant to be a cross-sectional view of these films. His decision to focus on sex as the factor of consequence turns out to be, by the way the author developed the thesis, more than a clever marketing device. Using sex as a metaphor for socio-political deductions about power was insightful. Finally, even though the topic was Asians in American films the author managed to move beyond the political restrictions on the discourse to illuminate the way Asians have confounded the Caucasian-normative perspective, and even to penetrate the film industry with authentic Asian points of view, such as how Asians appreciate sex with each other, which is a serious blow to the ethnocentric White male hegemony." I am posting this review which was written by a friend of mine to whom I lent this book.

Give me your body or you're a racist.
By Dave-o
Nguyen Tan Hoang is an open racist that feels entitled to the bodies of other men who do not want him. What do we call a man that uses social pressure and guilt to induce sex? He's a rapist. Nguyen Tan Hoang is a rapist attempting to force men who have no interest in his body into sex or face public shaming. He should be ashamed of himself. This book is awful. If this was about heteosexual men demanding sex from heterosexual woman and calling them racists for refusing, it would be pulled from Amazon. Do Not Support This Sexual Communist.

Not too impressed
By Eric Lee
Would the first Shogun of Japan, Yoritomo Minamoto, have wondered about his own masculinity just because he liked younger men?

Asians - LGBTQ or otherwise - who grew up in their home countries where they encountered no racism usually do not have this sort of crushing, navel-gazing sense of inferiority as displayed by this eye-rolling worthy book.

Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street (a John Hope Franklin Center Book), by Karen Ho

Financial collapses—whether of the junk bond market, the Internet bubble, or the highly leveraged housing market—are often explained as the inevitable result of market cycles: What goes up must come down. In Liquidated, Karen Ho punctures the aura of the abstract, all-powerful market to show how financial markets, and particularly booms and busts, are constructed. Through an in-depth investigation into the everyday experiences and ideologies of Wall Street investment bankers, Ho describes how a financially dominant but highly unstable market system is understood, justified, and produced through the restructuring of corporations and the larger economy.

Ho, who worked at an investment bank herself, argues that bankers’ approaches to financial markets and corporate America are inseparable from the structures and strategies of their workplaces. Her ethnographic analysis of those workplaces is filled with the voices of stressed first-year associates, overworked and alienated analysts, undergraduates eager to be hired, and seasoned managing directors. Recruited from elite universities as “the best and the brightest,” investment bankers are socialized into a world of high risk and high reward. They are paid handsomely, with the understanding that they may be let go at any time. Their workplace culture and networks of privilege create the perception that job insecurity builds character, and employee liquidity results in smart, efficient business. Based on this culture of liquidity and compensation practices tied to profligate deal-making, Wall Street investment bankers reshape corporate America in their own image. Their mission is the creation of shareholder value, but Ho demonstrates that their practices and assumptions often produce crises instead. By connecting the values and actions of investment bankers to the construction of markets and the restructuring of U.S. corporations, Liquidated reveals the particular culture of Wall Street often obscured by triumphalist readings of capitalist globalization.
