In 1955 Pan American World Airways began recruiting Japanese American women to work as stewardesses on its Tokyo-bound flights and eventually its round-the-world flights as well. Based in Honolulu, these women were informally known as Pan Am’s “Nisei”—second-generation Japanese Americans—even though not all of them were Japanese American or second-generation. They were ostensibly hired for their Japanese-language skills, but few spoke Japanese fluently. This absorbing account of Pan Am’s “Nisei” stewardess program suggests that the Japanese American (and later other Asian and Asian American) stewardesses were meant to enhance the airline’s image of exotic cosmopolitanism and worldliness. As its corporate archives demonstrate, Pan Am marketed itself as an iconic American company pioneering new frontiers of race, language, and culture. Christine R. Yano juxtaposes the airline’s strategies and practices with the recollections of former “Nisei” flight attendants. In interviews with the author, these women proudly recall their experiences as young women who left home to travel the globe with Pan American World Airways, forging their own cosmopolitan identities in the process. Airborne Dreams is the story of an unusual personnel program implemented by an American corporation intent on expanding and dominating the nascent market for international air travel. That program reflected the Jet Age dreams of global mobility that excited postwar Americans, as well as the inequalities of gender, class, race, and ethnicity that constrained many of them.

"You Call it the World -- We Call it Home"

Pan American World Airways started a program in 1955 to recruit Japanese-American women to become stewardesses on their flights to Asia. Their official reason for recruiting "nisei" women was to acquire crew who could speak Japanese. The unofficial, but clearly stated, requirement, was that the women should look Asian and exotic. The head of Pan Am pulled no punches in his desire to see the stewardesses be "like Japanese geisha girls, prepared to flatter and entertain the male passengers."
Although the term "nisei" means second generation, many of the women were actually third or fourth generation Americans and knew little if any Japanese. The language requirement turned out to be a flexible one, and many of the women learned their Japanese on the fly, as it were.
Professor Christine R. Yano considers the Pan Am program in the context of 1955, only a decade after the end of World War II and the dismantling of Japanese internment camps on the American mainland. She notes that this was also the year that saw Rosa Parks and Emmett Till in the news, Ray Kroc opening his first McDonald's, Elvis Presley's career taking off, and James Dean's death.
While Pan Am capitalized on Asian exoticism to attract male passengers, the Japanese-American stewardesses were happy to take advantage of the opportunity to embark on glamorous careers and travel the world. The dozens of women that Yano interviewed were thrilled to have had the chance to break out of their circumscribed worlds and become something other than a teacher or a nurse, the principle occupations for young women who were college educated in the 1950s. Yano writes of trying to find disgruntled or dissatisfied former employees of Pan Am, but finding very few people who had other than positive things to say about the airline.
Yano's Airborne Dreams describes a pivotal time in race relations (Pan Am wouldn't hire their first black stewardesses until 1965 under pressure from the NAACP), the feminist movement, and the jet age. It's a bit academic at times, but entirely engaging. The excellent bibliography provides more ideas for further reading.
