The World of Lucha Libre: Secrets, Revelations, and Mexican National Identity, by Heather Levi

The World of Lucha Libre is an insider’s account of lucha libre, the popular Mexican form of professional wrestling. Heather Levi spent more than a year immersed in the world of wrestling in Mexico City. Not only did she observe live events and interview wrestlers, referees, officials, promoters, and reporters; she also apprenticed with a retired luchador (wrestler). Drawing on her insider’s perspective, she explores lucha libre as a cultural performance, an occupational subculture, and a set of symbols that circulate through Mexican culture and politics. Levi argues that the broad appeal of lucha libre lies in its capacity to stage contradictions at the heart of Mexican national identity: between the rural and the urban, tradition and modernity, ritual and parody, machismo and feminism, politics and spectacle.

Levi considers lucha libre in light of scholarship about sport, modernization, and the formation of the Mexican nation-state, and in connection to professional wrestling in the United States. She examines the role of secrecy in wrestling, the relationship between wrestlers and the characters they embody, and the meanings of the masks worn by luchadors. She discusses male wrestlers who perform masculine roles, those who cross-dress and perform feminine roles, and female wrestlers who wrestle each other. Investigating the relationship between lucha libre and the mass media, she highlights the history of the sport’s engagement with television: it was televised briefly in the early 1950s, but not again until 1991. Finally, Levi traces the circulation of lucha libre symbols in avant-garde artistic movements and its appropriation in left-wing political discourse. The World of Lucha Libre shows how a sport imported from the United States in the 1930s came to be an iconic symbol of Mexican cultural authenticity.

Omens of Adversity: Tragedy, Time, Memory, Justice, by David Scott

Omens of Adversity is a profound critique of the experience of postcolonial, postsocialist temporality. The case study at its core is the demise of the Grenada Revolution (1979–1983), and the repercussions of its collapse. In the Anglophone Caribbean, the Grenada Revolution represented both the possibility of a break from colonial and neocolonial oppression, and hope for egalitarian change and social and political justice. The Revolution's collapse in 1983 was devastating to a revolutionary generation. In hindsight, its demise signaled the end of an era of revolutionary socialist possibility. Omens of Adversity is not a history of the Revolution or its fallout. Instead, by examining related texts and phenomena, David Scott engages with broader, enduring issues of political action and tragedy, generations and memory, liberalism and transitional justice, and the possibility of forgiveness. Ultimately, Scott argues that the palpable sense of the neoliberal present as time stalled, without hope for emancipatory futures, has had far-reaching effects on how we think about the nature of political action and justice.

Review
"Omens of Adversity is a deeply impressive and critical meditation on temporality, political action, memory, and history. It is a significant contribution to multiple fields, particularly Caribbean studies, and to ongoing theoretical debates about colonialism, postcolonial studies, and temporality." (Laurent Dubois, author of Haiti: The Aftershocks of History)

"The strength of Omens of Adversity lies in its ability to productively and persuasively move across interpretive practices, weaving together a diverse array of sources.... The work has deep implications for thinking about imaginations of the future" (Stephen McIssac TOPIA)

"Scholars struggling with similar questions and concepts will find here food for thought." (Mark Thurner American Historical Review)

“Omens of Adversity is a grim, sobering, and tragic book that should be required for all graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in postcolonial theory, Caribbean history, cultural anthropology, and others dealing with the “end of history” or political transition theory. Scholars with those interests should consider it a must read. It is not only a cautionary tale to constantly take stock of the past lest we live in a recurring catastrophic present but also one of the most intellectually gratifying and adventurous books of recent years.”   (Suzanne Simon American Ethnologist)

“This conceptually very dense book is surely pioneering in the way that it redefines temporality and political action and gives a language and method to study past and/or failed revolutionary actions.” (Charlotte Loris-Rodinoff Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute)

"Omens of Adversity will be of interest to students and scholars of Caribbean and postcolonial studies, political theory, Marxism and Revolution, Trauma and Memory Studies." (Shalini Puri New West Indian Guide 2016-06-01)

"Omens of Adversity is a thought-provoking and thoroughly inspiring book. Particularly illuminating is the notion of the contemporary neoliberal predicament as a stagnant, stranded present, devoid of promises of a better future." (Carl Rommel Social Anthropology 2016-08-09)

How academia can spoil an interesting (and important) topic
By Mark Twain "Sam"
The fall of the Grenadian Revolution in 1983 is a turning point in modern Caribbean history. Since the tragic October of that year, the Left and its vision of a non-neoliberal future have practically vanished from the scene. In covering this topic, however, the author engages in so much academic posturing that this book is truly one for the Ivory Tower. The interesting bits are drowned out by reams of useless postmodern theorizing. Those who need to learn the lessons of Grenada--young Caribbean women and men hoping to transform their countries-- will have no access to them here. Explaining these events and their legacies in a clear and straight-forward manner, I believe, would have been much more work. If you're interested in the Grenadian tragedy and its memory, please see Bruce Paddington's excellent film, "Forward Ever: The Killing of a Revolution."

Celibacies: American Modernism and Sexual Life, by Benjamin Kahan

In this innovative study, Benjamin Kahan traces the elusive history of modern celibacy. Arguing that celibacy is a distinct sexuality with its own practices and pleasures, Kahan shows it to be much more than the renunciation of sex or a cover for homosexuality. Celibacies focuses on a diverse group of authors, social activists, and artists, spanning from the suffragettes to Henry James, and from the Harlem Renaissance's Father Divine to Andy Warhol. This array of figures reveals the many varieties of celibacy that have until now escaped scholars of literary modernism and sexuality. Ultimately, this book wrests the discussion of celibacy and sexual restraint away from social and religious conservatism, resituating celibacy within a history of political protest and artistic experimentation. Celibacies offers an entirely new perspective on this little-understood sexual identity and initiates a profound reconsideration of the nature and constitution of sexuality.

Review
"This original and long-needed book on modern celibacy as a distinctive kind of sexuality—as opposed to the lack or negation of sexuality, or symptom of the repression of sexuality—holds true to its promise to show us just how richly varied celibacy can be, and how vital it in fact was to U.S. and British modernism. As Benjamin Kahan shows through insightful readings of texts by Henry James, Mina Loy, Marianne Moore, W. H. Auden, Father Divine, and Andy Warhol, among others, modernist celibacies were secular as well as religious, collectivizing as well as individualizing, sensuous as well as ascetic; celibacies were also capable of being feminist, erotic, strategic, and episodic. Attentive to celibacy as both practice and identity, Celibacies will be indispensable reading for queer theory and modernist studies."—Sianne Ngai, author of Our Aesthetic Categories: Zany, Cute, Interesting

"When did celibacy become unfashionable? Why has queer studies colluded with its denigration? And what do the histories of celibacy, homosexuality, queerness, friendship, and the contemporary Asexuality Movement share? Benjamin Kahan's compassionate genealogy of an alternative modernism provides judicious answers to these questions, while theorizing celibacy's tenacious existence along the edge of the intelligible. Countering queer studies' infatuation with sex-as-visible-transgression and its willingness to cede abstinence's reformist energies to the political Right, Celibacies offers savvy inspiration for thinking sexuality without sex."—Valerie Traub, author of The Renaissance of Lesbianism in Early Modern England

Kahan has written a book that is both interesting, well articulated, progressive, and perhaps for some, rather provoking. . . . The book is not only for those interested in the history of celibacy and sexuality, but also for those who work in the field of human sexuality. In Celibacies, Kahan has managed to offer a new perspective on celibacy without focusing on the politics of conservatism and religion, which is refreshing." (Hennie Weis Metapsychology Online Reviews)

“…Celibacies in a truly innovating way expands the concept rendering it positively connoted and giving it a new lease on life…. the author has managed to aggrandize the concept giving it breadth and depth, a past and a future.”  (Aristi Trendel American Studies)

“This scholarly but accessible study turns our notions of celibacy on their heads…. The book’s power derives from Kahan’s skill in making us reconceive sexual categories, particularly celibacy, which he argues convincingly is a positive way of choosing how to be in the world."  (Daniel A. Burr Gay and Lesbian Review Worldwide)

“Although abstinence does not exactly come off as sexy in Celibacies, Kahan succeeds in making it legible, visible and historically significant for a period that is more typically understood as one of sexual expression and revolution. Kahan does for abstinence what Rachel Whiteread’s reverse castings do for negative space: both reveal the thrum of what is typically thought of as emptiness or lack.” (Laura Frost Times Higher Education)

"Kahan’s analysis intrigues as well as provokes, forcing us to ask new questions about how we define sexuality and understand its history." (Carolyn Herbst Lewis Journal of American History)

"Kahan’s long-overdue consideration of celibacy as sexuality provides significant insights into nineteenth- and twentieth-century American formations of gender, politics, race, aging, citizenship, marriage, and popular culture.  . . . Kahan’s achievement lies not only in what it so effectively accomplishes—the resituation of celibacy within sexuality—but also in the many avenues of future inquiry it brings to view." (Melissa Sanchez GLQ)

“More than simple erotophobia, celibacy in Kahan’s hands yields nuanced literary readings of a range of queer writers and artists. . . . There is something wonderfully counterintuitive about Kahan’s characterization of celibacy as a form of sexuality rather than the absence of one. … Celibacies is an impressive first book, thoroughly researched and elegantly written. . . .” (Tim Dean American Literary History)

About the Author

Benjamin Kahan is Assistant Professor of English and Women's and Gender Studies at Louisiana State University.

A must read!
By Ashley N. Mack
This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in new and important work in queer theory. Kahan convincingly asserts the need for queer theories to account for celibacy on a continuum of desire. He suggests, elegantly, that we must reimagine celibacies as distinct sexual practices with political and social potency.

Strange Affinities: The Gender and Sexual Politics of Comparative Racialization (Perverse Modernities: A Series Edited

Representing some of the most exciting work in critical ethnic studies, the essays in this collection examine the production of racialized, gendered, and sexualized difference, and the possibilities for progressive coalitions, or the “strange affinities,” afforded by nuanced comparative analyses of racial formations. The nationalist and identity-based concepts of race underlying the mid-twentieth-century movements for decolonization and social change are not adequate to the tasks of critiquing the racial configurations generated by neocolonialism and contesting its inequities. Contemporary regimes of power produce racialized, gendered, and sexualized violence and labor exploitation, and they render subjects redundant and disposable by creating new, nominally nonracialized categories of privilege and stigma. The editors of Strange Affinities contend that the greatest potential for developing much-needed alternative comparative methods lies in women of color feminism, and the related intellectual tradition that Roderick A. Ferguson has called queer of color critique. Exemplified by the work of Audre Lorde, Cherríe Moraga, Barbara Smith, and the Combahee River Collective, these critiques do not presume homogeneity across racial or national groups. Instead, they offer powerful relational analyses of the racialized, gendered, and sexualized valuation and devaluation of human life.

Translating Empire: José Martí, Migrant Latino Subjects, and American Modernities (New Americanists), by Laura Lomas

In Translating Empire, Laura Lomas uncovers how late nineteenth-century Latino migrant writers developed a prescient critique of U.S. imperialism, one that prefigures many of the concerns about empire, race, and postcolonial subjectivity animating American studies today. During the 1880s and early 1890s, the Cuban journalist, poet, and revolutionary José Martí and other Latino migrants living in New York City translated North American literary and cultural texts into Spanish. Lomas reads the canonical literature and popular culture of the United States in the Gilded Age through the eyes of Martí and his fellow editors, activists, orators, and poets. In doing so, she reveals how, in the process of translating Anglo-American culture into a Latino-American idiom, the Latino migrant writers invented a modernist aesthetics to criticize U.S. expansionism and expose Anglo stereotypes of Latin Americans.

Lomas challenges longstanding conceptions about Martí through readings of neglected texts and reinterpretations of his major essays. Against the customary view that emphasizes his strong identification with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman, the author demonstrates that over several years, Martí actually distanced himself from Emerson’s ideas and conveyed alarm at Whitman’s expansionist politics. She questions the association of Martí with pan-Americanism, pointing out that in the 1880s, the Cuban journalist warned against foreign geopolitical influence imposed through ostensibly friendly meetings and the promotion of hemispheric peace and “free” trade. Lomas finds Martí undermining racialized and sexualized representations of America in his interpretations of Buffalo Bill and other rituals of westward expansion, in his self-published translation of Helen Hunt Jackson’s popular romance novel Ramona, and in his comments on writing that stereotyped Latino/a Americans as inherently unfit for self-government. With Translating Empire, Lomas recasts the contemporary practice of American studies in light of Martí’s late-nineteenth-century radical decolonizing project.

Babylon East: Performing Dancehall, Roots Reggae, and Rastafari in Japan, by Marvin D. Sterling

An important center of dancehall reggae performance, sound clashes are contests between rival sound systems: groups of emcees, tune selectors, and sound engineers. In World Clash 1999, held in Brooklyn, Mighty Crown, a Japanese sound system and the only non-Jamaican competitor, stunned the international dancehall community by winning the event. In 2002, the Japanese dancer Junko Kudo became the first non-Jamaican to win Jamaica’s National Dancehall Queen Contest. High-profile victories such as these affirmed and invigorated Japan’s enthusiasm for dancehall reggae. In Babylon East, the anthropologist Marvin D. Sterling traces the history of the Japanese embrace of dancehall reggae and other elements of Jamaican culture, including Rastafari, roots reggae, and dub music.

Sterling provides a nuanced ethnographic analysis of the ways that many Japanese involved in reggae as musicians and dancers, and those deeply engaged with Rastafari as a spiritual practice, seek to reimagine their lives through Jamaican culture. He considers Japanese performances and representations of Jamaican culture in clubs, competitions, and festivals; on websites; and in song lyrics, music videos, reggae magazines, travel writing, and fiction. He illuminates issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class as he discusses topics ranging from the cultural capital that Japanese dancehall artists amass by immersing themselves in dancehall culture in Jamaica, New York, and England, to the use of Rastafari as a means of critiquing class difference, consumerism, and the colonial pasts of the West and Japan. Encompassing the reactions of Jamaica’s artists to Japanese appropriations of Jamaican culture, as well as the relative positions of Jamaica and Japan in the world economy, Babylon East is a rare ethnographic account of Afro-Asian cultural exchange and global discourses of blackness beyond the African diaspora.

Street Corner Secrets: Sex, Work, and Migration in the City of Mumbai (Next Wave: New Directions in Women's Studies), by Svati P. Shah

Street Corner Secrets challenges widespread notions of sex work in India by examining solicitation in three spaces within the city of Mumbai that are seldom placed within the same analytic frame—brothels, streets, and public day-wage labor markets (nakas), where sexual commerce may be solicited discretely alongside other income-generating activities. Focusing on women who migrated to Mumbai from rural, economically underdeveloped areas within India, Svati P. Shah argues that selling sexual services is one of a number of ways women working as laborers may earn a living, demonstrating that sex work, like day labor, is a part of India's vast informal economy. Here, various means of earning—legitimized or stigmatized, legal or illegal—overlap or exist in close proximity to one another, shaping a narrow field of livelihood options that women navigate daily. In the course of this rich ethnography, Shah discusses policing practices, migrants' access to housing and water, the idea of public space, critiques of states and citizenship, and the discursive location of violence within debates on sexual commerce. Throughout, the book analyzes the epistemology of prostitution, and the silences and secrets that constitute the discourse of sexual commerce on Mumbai's streets.

Review
"I learned a tremendous amount from Street Corner Secrets. Svati P. Shah thoughtfully and passionately lays out the struggles poor women face every day and their creative attempts to survive and move forward. Her concern about and respect for the women she meets shines through on every page. This is the best of engaged anthropology. It will become a classic on gendered labor, sexual labor, and the precarity of informal work."
(Denise Brennan, author of Life Interrupted: Trafficking into Forced Labor in the United States)

"In this powerful ethnography, Svati P. Shah attends to the practices of everyday life, the political economy of space, and more generally to a methodology that does not just give lip service to ending the analytic isolation of sex work but instead models an extraordinary form of critical and reflexive ethnography. This is a critical contribution to scholarship on labor and contemporary political and market transformation."
(Lawrence Cohen, author of No Aging in India: Alzheimer's, the Bad Family, and Other Modern Things)

"Street Corner Secrets is a nuanced ethnographic exploration of lives of poor migrant women who are part of the urban informal economy in the Indian metropolis of Mumbai…. [T]his book is a significant contribution to making sense of the place of sex work in the lives of poor migrant women in urban India." (Anjua Agrawal American Anthropologist 2015-06-01)

"Based on critical ethnography, archival research, and discourse analysis, Svati Shah makes an important intervention in the ongoing feminist debates on sex work... Shah provides in this book... a much needed focus on the political economy of sexual commerce." (Manisha Desai Gender & Society 2016-04-01)

"Overall, this book’s ethnography makes a vibrant contribution to urban anthropology. Crafting an understanding of sexual labour that reflects the intricacies of rural-urban migration, the book sheds light on the management of knowledge around sex work, from secrecy to the rehabilitation of 'rescued' prostitutes, and shows how spaces occupied by women sex workers have multiple uses and meanings in Mumbai’s contested urban landscape."  (Atreyee Sen Pacific Affairs 2016-06-01)

"Svati P. Shah’s new book Street Corner Secrets makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around sex work in India.... Multi-sited urban ethnography alongside meticulous participant observation, provides a fascinating insight into Shah’s participants." (Rohit Dasgupta Royal Society for Asian Affairs Journal 2016-03-01)

This Was Not Our War: Bosnian Women Reclaiming the Peace, by Swanee Hunt

"Replacing tyranny with justice, healing deep scars, exchanging hatred for hope . . . the women in This Was Not Our War teach us how."—William Jefferson Clinton

This Was Not Our War shares amazing first-person accounts of twenty-six Bosnian women who are reconstructing their society following years of devastating warfare. A university student working to resettle refugees, a paramedic who founded a veterans’ aid group, a fashion designer running two nonprofit organizations, a government minister and professor who survived Auschwitz—these women are advocates, politicians, farmers, journalists, students, doctors, businesswomen, engineers, wives, and mothers. They are from all parts of Bosnia and represent the full range of ethnic traditions and mixed heritages. Their ages spread across sixty years, and their wealth ranges from expensive jewels to a few chickens. For all their differences, they have this much in common: all survived the war with enough emotional strength to work toward rebuilding their country. Swanee Hunt met these women through her diplomatic and humanitarian work in the 1990s. Over the course of seven years, she conducted multiple interviews with each one. In presenting those interviews here, Hunt provides a narrative framework that connects the women’s stories, allowing them to speak to one another.

The women describe what it was like living in a vibrant multicultural community that suddenly imploded in an onslaught of violence. They relate the chaos; the atrocities, including the rapes of many neighbors and friends; the hurried decisions whether to stay or flee; the extraordinary efforts to care for children and elderly parents and to find food and clean drinking water. Reflecting on the causes of the war, they vehemently reject the idea that age-old ethnic hatreds made the war inevitable. The women share their reactions to the Dayton Accords, the end of hostilities, and international relief efforts. While they are candid about the difficulties they face, they are committed to rebuilding Bosnia based on ideals of truth, justice, and a common humanity encompassing those of all faiths and ethnicities. Their wisdom is instructive, their courage and fortitude inspirational.

Intimate Activism: The Struggle for Sexual Rights in Postrevolutionary Nicaragua, by Cymene Howe

Intimate Activism tells the story of Nicaraguan sexual-rights activists who helped to overturn the most repressive antisodomy law in the Americas. The law was passed shortly after the Sandinistas lost power in 1990 and, to the surprise of many, was repealed in 2007. In this vivid ethnography, Cymene Howe analyzes how local activists balanced global discourses regarding human rights and identity politics with the contingencies of daily life in Nicaragua. Though they were initially spurred by the antisodomy measure, activists sought to change not only the law but also culture. Howe emphasizes the different levels of intervention where activism occurs, from mass-media outlets and public protests to meetings of clandestine consciousness-raising groups. She follows the travails of queer characters in a hugely successful telenovela, traces the ideological tensions within the struggle for sexual rights, and conveys the voices of those engaged in "becoming" lesbianas and homosexuales in contemporary Nicaragua.

Review
"Intimate Activism is an excellent ethnography of gender- and sexual-rights activism in postrevolutionary Nicaragua. Cymene Howe deftly folds the rich stories and description into a lively and sharp analysis. She has crafted an important work that provides new and productive ways of thinking about liberalism, activism, and global cultural flows."—Martin F. Manalansan IV, author of Global Divas: Filipino Gay Men in the Diaspora

"Cymene Howe's richly textured ethnography offers nuanced insight into the workings of lesbian and gay activism in postrevolutionary Nicaragua, showing how both the contours of Nicaraguan history and the shadow cast by U.S. movements shape local efforts to create visibility and pride. This evocative work sets a standard for understanding the transnational foundations of activism in the global South that should resonate in the field for years to come."—Ellen Lewin, coeditor of Out in Theory: The Emergence of Lesbian and Gay Anthropology

"An eloquent ethnography of sexual rights advocacy in Nicaragua in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries." (Patrick Staib Journal of Anthropological Research)

“Of particular interest is Howe’s reporting on three lesbian discussion groups, one hosted by a European-backed nongovernmental organization, another facilitated by local grass-roots activists, and a third convened in a rural setting. Throughout, Howe keenly observes ‘intimate pedagogies’: small face-to-face meetings that address deeply personal aspects of people’s lives.” (Richard Feinberg Foreign Affairs)

“Howe aptly describesIntimate Activism as an ethnography of activism, yet it is much more. Her work contributes to the decolonial project that is called for if we are to take both indigenous, or local, and global knowledge seriously...Written clearly and concisely, it will be of wide interest and will make a welcome addition to courses in cultural anthropology, Latin American studies, and gender and sexuality studies. (Florence E. Babb Women’s Review of Books)

“Intimate Activism will be an interesting read for researchers and graduate and undergraduate students working on same-sex sexualities, social movements and gender and sexual politics in Latin America, and its emphasis on lesbian identities and organizing is particularly welcome, since it is still a little explored area in those fields of study.” (Camilo Antillón European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies)

"Cymene Howe’s engaging, theoretically sophisticated, and well-written book is an ethnography of would-be social engineers (most of them Nicaraguan) trying to increase tolerance for sexual diversity in Nicaragua." (Stephen O. Murray American Anthropologist 2015-06-01)

“Cymene Howe has made an important contribution to the literature on sexuality, culture, and politics in Latin America in general and in Nicaragua in particular…. As an ethnography that paints pictures of a range of sexuality rights work during an important period of time, Cymene Howe’s Intimate Activism is quite successful. Her vivid images and nuanced analysis of the tensions inherent in trying to globalize, “normalize,” and simultaneously respect local sexual practices make this an excellent book for scholars or for courses on Latin American gender, sexuality, or culture.” (Karen Kampwirth Journal of the History of Sexuality)

“Howe importantly situates herself in her field as a queer and engaged ethnographer, highlighting the similarities between activism and anthropological research as collaborative, participatory efforts. Aside from this, her highly descriptive book provides a number of significant suggestions to scholars of activism, from the complexities of a politics of visibility to the intricacies of rights politics, claims-making, and subject-shaping.” (Irene Peano Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute)

Solid ethnography
By Krysta Beam
Howe's ethnographical study on sexual rights activists in Managua, Nicaragua offers a valuable glimpse into the complex and interwoven politics of Lesbian and Gay activists "struggling" against an anti-sodomy law proposed by Nicaragua's post-revolutionary government. It should be noted that the scope of this monograph is limited to a particular group of "working class" (Upper-Middle, white-mestizo, urban) Nicaraguans, and is limited in its intersectional perspectives.

This book is genius.
By Benish Bahalim
Dr. Cymene Howe reveals the minute details many ethnographies tend to overlook. While the book faces the notions of gender and sexuality headstrong, it also manages to truly give a sense of the struggle for movement in developing countries. Culture within the phases of society versus the distinction of class and authority are prominent throughout the book.

If someone were to ask me what anthropology is, I'd simply hand them this book without any hesitation. As a student, "Intimate Activism," once again awoke my passion for anthropology. "Intimate Activism," is a story about a revolution and the best part is that its a firsthand reality you get to experience as you read.

Warning: It is very hard to put this book down once you start reading! Enjoy!

Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty's Trek across the Pacific, by Christine R. Yano

In Pink Globalization, Christine R. Yano examines the creation and rise of Hello Kitty as a part of Japanese Cute-Cool culture. Yano argues that the international popularity of Hello Kitty is one aspect of what she calls pink globalization—the spread of goods and images labeled cute (kawaii) from Japan to other parts of the industrial world. The concept of pink globalization connects the expansion of Japanese companies to overseas markets, the enhanced distribution of Japanese products, and the rise of Japan's national cool as suggested by the spread of manga and anime. Yano analyzes the changing complex of relations and identities surrounding the global reach of Hello Kitty's cute culture, discussing the responses of both ardent fans and virulent detractors. Through interviews, Yano shows how consumers use this iconic cat to negotiate gender, nostalgia, and national identity. She demonstrates that pink globalization allows the foreign to become familiar as it brings together the intimacy of cute and the distance of cool. Hello Kitty and her entourage of marketers and consumers wink, giddily suggesting innocence, sexuality, irony, sophistication, and even sheer happiness. Yano reveals the edgy power in this wink and the ways it can overturn, or at least challenge, power structures.

Review
"Christine R. Yano's deep meditations on Hello Kitty provide us with dizzying detail while simultaneously explaining the allure of what is ostensibly only a childish character. Most studies on the circulation of Japanese popular culture take a macro view, looking at a spectrum of manga and anime as aspects of a cool culture flow. Yano's achievement is to explore a specific commodity and its image, following the trajectory of Hello Kitty from Japan to the United States as she is created, produced, consumed and endlessly discussed." (Laura Miller, author of Beauty Up: Exploring Contemporary Japanese Body Aesthetics)

"This is another absorbing study by one of our most accomplished anthropologists of Japan. Christine R. Yano's sophisticated formulation of Hello Kitty's pink globalization significantly advances our understanding of transnational popular culture flows. And it is great fun to read!" (William W. Kelly, editor of Fanning the Flames: Fans and Consumer Culture in Contemporary Japan)

“Pink Globalization isn’t a primer for Hello Kitty lovers, it’s a deep dive into the tale of the small feline that has dominated culture from East to West—all without saying a word or making a sound. Not every icon can make that claim, but, then again, not every icon is Hello Kitty.” (Scott Elingburg Popmatters)

“Many feminists find Hello Kitty to be an example of a submissive, infantile undercurrent of Japanese culture. Other detractors see her simply as an example of manufactured corporate sweetness. Perhaps the best explanation for her popularity, however, was inadvertently provided by an overheated religious website called Hell of Kitty, which warned that the cat ‘invades children's vulnerable hearts exactly through the weaponry of cuteness.’ And who can resist that?” (Meghan Keane Wall Street Journal)

“Required reading for anyone interested in contemporary Asian studies, American studies, globalization, popular culture, and cultural studies.” (L. Miller Choice)

“Featuring one-on-one interviews with Hello Kitty fans and detractors alike, it offers readers a rare insight into the iconic cat’s influence on gender, nostalgia and national identity. By the book’s end, you should understand Kitty-chan’s journey from innocent kitten to sophisticated global superstar — even if you still don’t quite get her overall appeal.”  (Elliott Samuels Japan Times)

“If you’ve ever thought about or explained cool Japan, feminized consumerism, feminist reinterpretations, high art versus low art, Christine R. Yano’s Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific is the book for you. . . . Highly recommended for its careful and detailed analysis of the complete Hello Kitty phenomenon.” (Raizel Liebler The Learned Fangirl)

“Yano’s most impressive accomplishment with Pink Globalization is the way that she arranges the little details in such a way as to suggest the big picture without ever slipping into didacticism or the rhetorical register of narcissism. Tackling Sanrio, even in part, is no small task, but Pink Globalization manages it with honesty, empathy, and intelligence.” (Ben Gabriel The New Inquiry)

"Yano has tied together in one package a number of disparate themes that share the common denominator of Hello Kitty. She artfully demonstrates that this well-traveled feline figure is not a flash-in-the-pan craze  . . .  Her book is an invaluable contribution to the study of transnational flows of culture." (Brian McVeigh Journal of Japanese Studies)

“Pink Globalization represents a well-inflected look at the Hello Kitty phenomenon. The writing is assured and theoretically rich yet quite accessible to a general readership, including undergraduates. Despite this theoretical richness, it also manages throughout the light, humorous touches one would hope for from a book on this topic…. Pink Globalization is a valuable contribution to the anthropological, Japanese studies, gender studies, and other literature on the internationalization of Japanese popular culture.” (Marvin D. Sterling Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute)

“Yano’s book is an engaging and interesting read and will appeal to a wide readership—ranging from business history, to Japanese studies, to popular culture studies, as well as marketing and consumerism. … [A] rich and sophisticated portrayal of a seemingly cute but, in reality, complex commodity.” (Helen Macnaughtan Business History Review)

“Obviously, Japan specialists and symbolic anthropologists will love this book. But this is one of those anthropology books that you can actually give to someone outside the tribe without fear of them looking at you askance or with polite boredom—it will be anything but. And this book is going to make a fine text next semester when I teach Japanese popular culture.” (James Stanlaw American Ethnologist)

Pink Globalization by Christine Yano explores the omnipresence of Hello Kitty both in Japanese culture as well as in Western countries. Aside from Hello Kitty's associations with Japanese identity, and how this has expanded to include the wider spectrum of Asian identities as well, Yano also interrogates the idea of Hello Kitty as being representative of the "emasculated" state of post-war Japan. This idea, that Japan has become increasingly "trivialized" as a result of cute-culture, also connects with the image of Japan being exported to the Western world. How this image affects Japan, and the rest of Asia, is part of Yano's interest in writing Pink Globalization. The exportation of this image, of this idea of Japan as cute-cool, also plays into the consumerism that is becoming more and more present in the global community. Sanrio is portrayed not only as an exporter of a product, but the missionaries of happiness that can only be bought in order to be experienced.

Definitely Recommend!
By Jill Klancke Cook
Pink Globalization is a phenomenally written piece of literature that takes the reader into a world seemingly unknown, that which in reality surrounds us on a daily basis; the intersection of "cute", culture, gender, globaliztion and of course the main topic of Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty even in the West is a household name, but there is much more to that name, the character and culture that both created, and is fueled by, Hello Kitty. Yano's exploration of this topic is fascinating in the range of topics covered, everything from gender to marketing, and her analysis of a product that appears to be one-dimensional (if you have no previous knowledge of Hello Kitty); reading of this book would of course prove that theory incorrect. I highly recommend this book as I have never before encountered an academic book that reads like something you might pick up for leisure. Fantastic analysis, academic topics, and interesting dialogue make this book a true page-turner.
