Since the 1960s, the Native peoples of northeastern Canada, both Inuit and Innu, have experienced epidemics of substance abuse, domestic violence, and youth suicide. Seeking to understand these transformations in the capacities of Native communities to resist cultural, economic, and political domination, Gerald M. Sider offers an ethnographic analysis of aboriginal Canadians' changing experiences of historical violence. He relates acts of communal self-destruction to colonial and postcolonial policies and practices, as well as to the end of the fur and sealskin trades. Autonomy and dignity within Native communities have eroded as individuals have been deprived of their livelihoods and treated by the state and corporations as if they were disposable. Yet Native peoples' possession of valuable resources provides them with some income and power to negotiate with state and business interests. Sider's assessment of the health of Native communities in the Canadian province of Labrador is filled with potentially useful findings for Native peoples there and elsewhere. While harrowing, his account also suggests hope, which he finds in the expressiveness and power of Native peoples to struggle for a better tomorrow within and against domination.

Gerald M. Sider is Professor of Anthropology, Emeritus, at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York. This book is socially and psychologically insightful.
It offers new and original ways to think about the modern epidemic of self-destruction which is being lived (and died) by the Native peoples of Labrador: youth suicide, domestic violence, alcoholism and gas sniffing.
To create these new ways of thinking, Sider explores the history that has been lived, and which is still being lived, by the Inuit and Innu. Both peoples were displaced, disposed and exploited in such a way as to leave them no choice but to move into a state of dependence. In fact, this dependence was actively created first by fur-traders and missionaries, and later by mining, logging and hydro-electric companies, as well as by government, because it allowed these powerful institutions to manipulate the Innu and Inuit.
This book explores how Inuit and Innu people have lived and died ‘within and against’ this dependency.
I found the history described by Sider’s shocking. It was painful to read of human beings being treated in such an abusive way by other human beings. It was hard to read of the centuries of socially imposed suffering which the Innu and Inuit have had to endure. Since the 1500s, each generation has had to live with both old trauma -- inherited from previous generations, and with new trauma -- created by fresh cycles of exploitation and dehumanization.
This was my first in-depth exposure to cultural trauma – by which I mean trauma that is created because of how entire communities are treated. It was a tough read because of the dynamics it illuminates, but it was also a valuable read. It had a profound impact on me, and expanded my understanding in a very meaningful way.
