About the Author
William E. Connolly is Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. His most recent books include A World of Becoming; Capitalism and Christianity, American Style; and Pluralism, all also published by Duke University Press. He is a former editor of Political Theory and a founder of the journal theory & event. His classic study The Terms of Political Discourse won the Benjamin Lippincott Award in 1999.

Timely and important

I enjoyed reading this book. It follows connections between neoliberal economic policy, Christianity and Modernism to state in all clarity that we have important issues that need to be addressed immediately if we, as participants in a cosmos that can also do without us, intend to survive. Issues such as our anthropocentrism, our passive stance as citizens, the philosophical separation of culture and nature, the widespread belief in rational and knowable systems and more are addressed here. The arguments are accessible, convincing, provocative and action-oriented.
Here is the last sentence: "The overriding goal is to press international organizations, states, corporations, banks, labor unions, churches, consumers, citizens, and universities to act in concerted ways to defeat neoliberalism, to curtail climate change, to reduce inequality, and to instill a vibrant pluralist spirituality into democratic machines that have lost too much of their vitality."
The way to get there - grass roots work by the individual through the "cultivation of vitality in a world of becoming" - is a concept amenable to many applications so I was not left with a feeling of hopelessness, but rather with a respect and desire to do the little things that may, in fact, be groundstones for larger ones.

Sometimes things change, a lot more than you expect.

In "The Fragility of Things," Connolly thoughtfully and creatively explores how complex systems, such as the ecosystem, the economy, and the political system interact with each other, pushing each other to create new possibilities, while at the same time risking change that exceeds their ability to adapt. At a time when the world's climate is changing, threatening the stability of every self-organizing system on the planet, Connolly provides deep insight on how truly fragile our life on this planet is.

One of the most important books I have read. 'fragility' and Connolly's 'world of becoming' has helped to radically inform and transform my non-theistic spiritual practice, spritual and political engagement with the world. Requires a careful and close reading and revisiting.
