Derrida and the Time of the PoliticalFrom Brand: Duke University Press Books

An intellectual event, Derrida and the Time of the Political marks the first time since Jacques Derrida’s death in 2004 that leading scholars have come together to critically assess the philosopher’s political and ethical writings. Skepticism about the import of deconstruction for political thought has been widespread among American critics since Derrida’s work became widely available in English in the late 1970s. While Derrida expounded political and ethical themes from the late 1980s on, there has been relatively little Anglo-American analysis of that later work or its relation to the philosopher’s entire corpus. Filling a critical gap, this volume provides multiple perspectives on the political turn in Derrida’s work, showing how deconstruction bears on political theory and real-world politics. The contributors include distinguished scholars of deconstruction whose thinking developed in close proximity to Derrida’s, as well as leading political theorists and philosophers who engage Derrida’s thought from further afield.

The volume opens with a substantial introduction in which Pheng Cheah and Suzanne Guerlac survey Derrida’s entire corpus and position his later work in relation to it. The remaining essays address the concerns that arise out of Derrida’s analysis of politics and the conditions of the political, such as the meaning and scope of democracy, the limits of sovereignty, the relationship between the ethical and the political, the nature of responsibility, the possibility for committed political action, the implications of deconstructive thought for non-Western politics, and the future of nationalism in an era of globalization and declining state sovereignty. The collection is framed by original contributions from Hélène Cixous and Judith Butler.

Bad Water: Nature, Pollution, and Politics in Japan, 1870–1950 (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society), by Robert Stolz

Bad Water is a sophisticated theoretical analysis of Japanese thinkers and activists' efforts to reintegrate the natural environment into Japan's social and political thought in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth. The need to incorporate nature into politics was revealed by a series of large-scale industrial disasters in the 1890s. The Ashio Copper Mine unleashed massive amounts of copper, arsenic, mercury, and other pollutants into surrounding watersheds. Robert Stolz argues that by forcefully demonstrating the mutual penetration of humans and nature, industrial pollution biologically and politically compromised the autonomous liberal subject underlying the political philosophy of the modernizing Meiji state. In the following decades, socialism, anarchism, fascism, and Confucian benevolence and moral economy were marshaled in the search for new theories of a modern political subject and a social organization adequate to the environmental crisis. With detailed considerations of several key environmental activists, including Tanaka Shōzō, Bad Water is a nuanced account of Japan's environmental turn, a historical moment when, for the first time, Japanese thinkers and activists experienced nature as alienated from themselves and were forced to rebuild the connections.

Review
"Bad Water is a vitally important study of the growing incidence of recognizable pollution of the environment in Japan's late Meiji period (1890s–1900s). It is both a prescient and penetrating critique of the costs of the country's modernizing transformation and a withering assault on the political paradigm that informed it. Above all else, Robert Stolz has constructed a brilliant critique of the price extracted of the country's liberal endowment and, by extension, of liberalism everywhere." (Harry Harootunian, author of History's Disquiet: Modernity, Cultural Practice, and the Question of Everyday Life)

"In Bad Water, Robert Stolz has created a fascinating, complex synthesis of intellectual history, environmental studies, and critical theory. The book will speak to readers interested in capitalist modernity, the dialogue between the cosmopolitan and the local production of knowledge, and social movements and the possibilities of criticism. Thoughtful and provocative, it is a superb book and one that I expect will be widely read." (Christopher Nelson, author of Dancing with the Dead: Memory, Performance, and Everyday Life in Postwar Okinawa)

“The author presents important material that is new to environmental history, to intellectual history as well as to studies of Japan. He shows that Japan has a long history of environmental disasters and gives some sense of why this has been so. His individual case studies (Tanaka, Ishikawa and Kurosawa) are well selected. And his conclusions about the limitations of liberal democracy and of liberalism in any form are illuminating, thoughtful accurate and sobering. Nature does not care whether politicians or a majority of the population they lead recognize the greater frequency of extreme weather—including global warming—or not. These things are happening and surely require a far stronger response than any counter-measures that have been proffered up to now.” (James Bartholomew Times Literary Supplement)

"A sound achievement in an area of modern Japanese thought too lightly regarded before now." (Tom Havens American Historical Review)

"Stolz's book gains its special strength from its close intertwining of Marxist theory with the lives of the central protagonists... As this statement suggests, Bad Water successfully stitches together environmental history, a social ecology that predates that of Bookchin, and Marxist theory." (Paul Waley Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

"Stolz brings to his study fresh and important perspectives on familiar events, intellectual trends, and individuals as well as introducing heretofore little-known (but significant) thinkers and narratives to the Western scholarship." (William M. Tsutsui Pacific Affairs 2016-06-01)

"Robert Stolz’s Bad Water is an impressive analysis of the history of the interaction between political and ecological thought in modern Japan.... This book is valuable to the study not only of Tanaka and of Japanese environmental problems but also of the history of ideas on the relationships among politics, society, the human body, and nature in a global context." (Yuuki Tomozawa East Asian Science, Technology and Society 2016-06-03)

"While Bad Water’s close reading of the Ashio copper mine disaster and the origins of Japan’s environmental movement will appeal to specialists in modern Japan, Stolz’s sophisticated Marxian analysis of the subsumption of nature under capital is a significant contribution to environmental history that deserves a wide audience of environmental scholars." (Tristan R. Grunow Environmental History 2015-07-29)

"Stolz’s study has a relevance that goes far beyond its immediate time and place.... Bad Water is a very valuable contribution, not just to Japanese environmental history, but also to global debates on the present-day environmental impasse." (Tessa Morris-Suzuki Japanese Studies 2015-07-14)

"This is a fascinating book for those who are interested in Environmentalism in other countries, especially Japan." (Miller, Ryder W. Electronic Green Journal 2015-03-01)

Cultivating the Nile: The Everyday Politics of Water in Egypt (New Ecologies for the Twenty-First Century), by Jessica Barnes

The waters of the Nile are fundamental to life in Egypt. In this compelling ethnography, Jessica Barnes explores the everyday politics of water: a politics anchored in the mundane yet vital acts of blocking, releasing, channeling, and diverting water. She examines the quotidian practices of farmers, government engineers, and international donors as they interact with the waters of the Nile flowing into and through Egypt. Situating these local practices in relation to broader processes that affect Nile waters, Barnes moves back and forth from farmer to government ministry, from irrigation canal to international water conference. By showing how the waters of the Nile are constantly made and remade as a resource by people in and outside Egypt, she demonstrates the range of political dynamics, social relations, and technological interventions that must be incorporated into understandings of water and its management.

Review
"Cultivating the Nile is an impressive account of something we know little about despite its growing urgency: the causes of water scarcity in any particular region and the ways that the people affected deal with it. A significant contribution to the growing literature on water sustainability around the world, Cultivating the Nile is likely to be discussed for years to come." (Steven C. Caton, Harvard University 2014-03-10)

"Readers will be drawn to this book for the timeliness of its topic, an examination of a major case of scarcity of water, the most basic of all resources. They will read it closely, finding it one of the very few academic books that is genuinely a page-turner, with its vivid narration, powerful evocations of daily life, and provocative insights into the workings of power. And they will remember it because it will make them understand water in a new way, as a substance that has a social life as well as a material existence." (Ben Orlove, Columbia University)

“Barnes argues that water scarcity in Egypt is not a ‘given’ but rather ‘made,’ through the interactions of bureaucrats, donors, and consumers. . . .  Among other fascinating details that Barnes describes is the country’s massive system of underground drains; if laid end to end, the drains would circle the globe multiple times. (Foreign Affairs 2015-05-01)

"The book is emotional and inspiring and is recommended for the activist, scholar, planner, student, and journalist. It is an interesting cross-cultural experience and one is likely to care about such things after reading it." (Ryder W. Miller Electronic Green Journal 2016-01-01)

“[This] book is likely to be a cornerstone in the growing anthropological literature on water by virtue of a rare combination: of accessibility of language and structure, and complexity of argument and method…. Cultivating the Nile is a fascinating account, which is likely to attract the attention of the growing community of water anthropologists. It also deserves a wide readership within the community of water policy-makers and others working with resource governance.” (Mattias Borg Rasmussen Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute 2016-04-27)

"Given its ethnographic richness and its analytic originality, this book should be on the shelf of readers who are interested in any of the following fields: political ecology, science and technology studies, and Middle East studies. It will also certainly find its own place in the emerging literature of our discipline including the anthropology of infrastructure, the anthropology of water and the anthropology of resource making. Since it is written lucidly and plainly, without jargon, I also expect the book to move beyond the Ivory Tower and to draw a broad non-academic audience." (Bada Choi Social Anthropology 2016-06-01)

"...Barnes’s book is a fresh and innovative addition to the study of inequality, globalization, and Egypt. Scholars and students in a range of academic disciplines will find Cultivating the Nile valuable due to its focus on timely questions of the human–nonhuman and the political–natural worlds." (Rania K. Sweis American Anthropologist 2016-06-01)

"Cultivating the Nile reaches to a body of research and theoretical horizons not usually covered by scholarship on everyday politics in Egypt and the Middle East, pointing to the relevance of environmental politics in the region to wider theoretical debates on materiality and the role of material substances in social theory, nonhuman and distributed patterns of power and agency, and the fluidity and verticality of space. As such, the book’s significance extends beyond the limits of its regional scope to speak to wider intellectual engagements with environmental and spatial issues in social theory." (Tamer Elshayal Arab Studies Journal 2016-03-01)

Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, the Sixties, and Sound Recording, by David Grubbs

John Cage's disdain for records was legendary. He repeatedly spoke of the ways in which recorded music was antithetical to his work. In Records Ruin the Landscape, David Grubbs argues that, following Cage, new genres in experimental and avant-garde music in the 1960s were particularly ill suited to be represented in the form of a recording. These activities include indeterminate music, long-duration minimalism, text scores, happenings, live electronic music, free jazz, and free improvisation. How could these proudly evanescent performance practices have been adequately represented on an LP?

In their day, few of these works circulated in recorded form. By contrast, contemporary listeners can encounter this music not only through a flood of LP and CD releases of archival recordings but also in even greater volume through Internet file sharing and online resources. Present-day listeners are coming to know that era's experimental music through the recorded artifacts of composers and musicians who largely disavowed recordings. In Records Ruin the Landscape, Grubbs surveys a musical landscape marked by altered listening practices.

Review
“An engaging book.” (David Revill Times Higher Education)

“The premise of [Grubbs’s] understandably authoritative first book is that experimental music’s flowering in the 1960s . . . was incompatible with the limitations of orthodox recording formats. . . . With an engaging frankness . . . Grubbs contrasts this tendency with his own fan-by appetite for records and the documentary efficacy of the contemporary digital realm, concluding positively that the latter potentially offers unmediated, universal access to the panoply of esoteric music—something unthinkable in the 1960s.” (David Sheppard Mojo)

"David Grubbs delivers a vital, searching treatise on the volatility of musical listening and the seeminging encyclopedic record of the avant-garde we have inherited from the 1960s, an era vastly different from our own in ways that are newly unpacked here. John Cage and his contemporaries' squemishness about the record and its 'thingness' are compellingly at odds with Grubbs's own phonophilia." (Marina Rosenfeld, composer and multimedia artist)

"Beautifully written and brimming with unexpected insights, Records Ruin the Landscape will undoubtedly inspire its readers to collect, download, and/or stream the wonderfully broad range of musicians and composers it examines. With a remarkable level of attentiveness, expertise, and care, David Grubbs's fascinating book draws upon the most intimate, oft-overlooked details of sound recordings to produce a profound new understanding of the stakes of what it means to listen to the past in the present." (Branden W. Joseph, author of Beyond the Dream Syndicate: Tony Conrad and the Arts after Cage)

"Records Ruin the Landscape is a pleasure to read, full of wonderful anecdotes and historical material. David Grubbs approaches John Cage and his legacy from a new and refreshing angle, by examining the vexed relationship of experimental and improvised music to recording and phonography. The questions that he poses—about the ontology and potentiality of recording in relation to live performance, improvisation, chance, and indeterminacy—are important, and he answers them in smart and provocative ways." (Christoph Cox, coeditor of Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music)

“For compositions whose whole raison d’être is to generate a drastically different realization with every performance . . . no recording of any one performance could be said to ‘be’ the piece. . . . David Grubbs’s exhaustively researched Records Ruin the Landscape explores this dilemma specifically as it affected the generation of avant-garde composers who hit their stride in the sixties, John Cage being the most prominent and outspoken among them.” (David Mandl Los Angeles Review of Books 2014-03-24)

“The risk writers run, of course, with the big questions approach, is universalising their personal narrative in order to present the big answer. Grubbs is too skilled and self-aware to run into this problem. His breadth of research in musicology and aesthetic theory is balanced in this short and engaging book with candid writing about his own experiences of recordings of experimental music. . . . It is testament to Grubbs’s sensitivity as a writer that sympathetic picture merges of these musicians, who seem often to be railing against hierarchies they can’t quite help being part of.” (Frances Morgan The Wire 2014-06-01)

"One of the chief joys of this book is that seeks to rediscover the avant-gardes of the 1960s in all their spontaneity, in their present-ness, as if unfolding these mavericks from their own perspectives, without benefit of current hindsight. We learn, reading this book, what the future looked like to the past. Records Ruin the Landscape seeks to prestidigitate the landscape of the 1960s back to life.  For this, one should be thankful—including for the recordings that allow David Grubbs’ act of imagination and scholarship to have taken place." (Daniel Herwitz Critical Inquiry)

Mad Men, Mad World: Sex, Politics, Style, and the 1960sFrom Duke University Press Books

Since the show's debut in 2007, Mad Men has invited viewers to immerse themselves in the lush period settings, ruthless Madison Avenue advertising culture, and arresting characters at the center of its 1960s fictional world. Mad Men, Mad World is a comprehensive analysis of this groundbreaking TV series. Scholars from across the humanities consider the AMC drama from a fascinating array of perspectives, including fashion, history, architecture, civil rights, feminism, consumerism, art, cinema, and the serial format, as well as through theoretical frames such as critical race theory, gender, queer theory, global studies, and psychoanalysis.

In the introduction, the editors explore the show's popularity; its controversial representations of race, class, and gender; its powerful influence on aesthetics and style; and its unique use of period historicism and advertising as a way of speaking to our neoliberal moment. Mad Men, Mad World also includes an interview with Phil Abraham, an award-winning Mad Men director and cinematographer. Taken together, the essays demonstrate that understanding Mad Men means engaging the show not only as a reflection of the 1960s but also as a commentary on the present day.

The Chile Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The Latin America Readers)From Duke University Press Books

The Chile Reader makes available a rich variety of documents spanning more than five hundred years of Chilean history. Most of the selections are by Chileans; many have never before appeared in English. The history of Chile is rendered from diverse perspectives, including those of Mapuche Indians and Spanish colonists, peasants and aristocrats, feminists and military strongmen, entrepreneurs and workers, and priests and poets. Among the many selections are interviews, travel diaries, letters, diplomatic cables, cartoons, photographs, and song lyrics.

Texts and images, each introduced by the editors, provide insights into the ways that Chile's unique geography has shaped its national identity, the country's unusually violent colonial history, and the stable but autocratic republic that emerged after independence from Spain. They shed light on Chile's role in the world economy, the social impact of economic modernization, and the enduring problems of deep inequality. The Reader also covers Chile's bold experiments with reform and revolution, its subsequent descent into one of Latin America's most ruthless Cold War dictatorships, and its much-admired transition to democracy and a market economy in the years since dictatorship.

Transforming the Frontier: Peace Parks and the Politics of Neoliberal Conservation in Southern Africa, by Bram Büscher

International peace parks—transnational conservation areas established and managed by two or more countries—have become a popular way of protecting biodiversity while promoting international cooperation and regional development. In Transforming the Frontier, Bram Büscher shows how cross-border conservation neatly reflects the neoliberal political economy in which it developed.

Based on extensive research in southern Africa with the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation and Development Project, Büscher explains how the successful promotion of transfrontier conservation as a "win-win" solution happens not only in spite of troubling contradictions and problems, but indeed because of them. This is what he refers to as the "politics of neoliberal conservation," which receives its strength from effectively combining strategies of consensus, antipolitics, and marketing. Drawing on long-term, multilevel ethnographic research, Büscher argues that transfrontier conservation projects are not as concerned with on-the-ground development as they are purported to be. Instead, they are reframing environmental protection and sustainable development to fit an increasingly contradictory world order.
