Securing Paradise: Tourism and Militarism in Hawai’i and the Philippines (Next Wave: New Directions in Women's Studies), by Vernadet

In Securing Paradise, Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez shows how tourism and militarism have functioned together in Hawaii and the Philippines, jointly empowering the United States to assert its geostrategic and economic interests in the Pacific. She does so by interpreting fiction, closely examining colonial and military construction projects, and delving into present-day tourist practices, spaces, and narratives. For instance, in both Hawaii and the Philippines, U.S. military modes of mobility, control, and surveillance enable scenic tourist byways. Past and present U.S. military posts, such as the Clark and Subic Bases and the Pearl Harbor complex, have been reincarnated as destinations for tourists interested in World War II. The history of the U.S. military is foundational to tourist itineraries and imaginations in such sites. At the same time, U.S. military dominance is reinforced by the logics and practices of mobility and consumption underlying modern tourism. Working in tandem, militarism and tourism produce gendered structures of feeling and formations of knowledge. These become routinized into everyday life in Hawaii and the Philippines, inculcating U.S. imperialism in the Pacific.

Review
"Securing Paradise will become a landmark work. It is the first systematic comparison of the Philippines and Hawaii within the shared optic of U.S. imperial history and its military-tourism security complex. It will serve as a model for an emergent American postcolonial studies, paving the way for a more appropriately cosmopolitan critique of the already cosmopolitan workings of capitalism and empire."—Vicente L. Rafael, author of The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines

"In Securing Paradise, Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez's original research and fascinating case studies substantiate her argument that in both the Philippines and Hawaii, militarization and tourism have worked hand-in-glove in the service of U.S. national security strategy in the Pacific. Gonzalez digs deep into the dynamic interplay between militarism and tourism in this timely, consciousness-raising analysis."—Cynthia Enloe, author of Globalization and Militarism: Feminists Make the Link

“Highly recommended.”   (D. J. Timothy Choice)

"[A]n impressive scholarly contribution to transnational U.S. history and American Studies." (Christine Skwiot Journal of American History)

“[A]  bold and creative argument for understanding the twinned projects of tourism and US militarism in the Pacific as grounded in multiple but always overlapping discourses of security. . . .  Undoubtedly, Securing Paradise will become required reading in many fields, from Pacific Islands studies and Asian American studies to indigenous studies, women and gender studies, ethnic studies, and American studies.” (Maile Arvin Contemporary Pacific)

“Securing Paradise compels readers with its unique and inventive approach to a ground-breaking subject. . . .” (Michael C. Hawkins Journal of Southeast Asian Studies)

“Securing Paradise is a significant contribution to the vibrant field of cultural studies of US imperialism. The book constantly reminds readers of the violence that tropical discourse, militarisation and the tourist industry exert on colonised peoples. Perhaps most importantly Gonzalez has written a history of a tenaciously imperial present, which in Hawai?i and the Philippines—as in many other places in the Pacific and the Caribbean—cannot be understood without thinking about the links between militarism and tourism.”  (Holger Droessler Journal of Pacific History)

“Gonzalez has written an important book that makes concrete the lingering affective and material consequences of the U.S. empire’s projection of freedom with violence in the twentieth century. It has laid the groundwork for other scholars to examine similar processes of ‘decolonization’ as they unfolded elsewhere—in Guam, Samoa, Okinawa, for example—that will deepen our understanding of the pernicious effects and persistence of the American empire in the Pacific.” (Simeon Man Hawaiian Journal of History 2015-09-01)

"The text is to be applauded for its quality of analysis, and for its original contribution to tourism studies, military studies and American studies literatures..... Gonzalez presents an impressive and fascinating analysis of her selected case studies. She deftly overlaps mobile sexualities, re-colonization via militarism and tourism, and neoliberalism." (Claudia Bell Journal of New Zealand and Pacific Studies 2016-05-01)

Centering Animals in Latin American HistoryFrom Baker and Taylor

Centering Animals in Latin American History writes animals back into the history of colonial and postcolonial Latin America. This collection reveals how interactions between humans and other animals have significantly shaped narratives of Latin American histories and cultures. The contributors work through the methodological implications of centering animals within historical narratives, seeking to include nonhuman animals as social actors in the histories of Mexico, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Chile, Brazil, Peru, and Argentina. The essays discuss topics ranging from canine baptisms, weddings, and funerals in Bourbon Mexico to imported monkeys used in medical experimentation in Puerto Rico. Some contributors examine the role of animals in colonization efforts. Others explore the relationship between animals, medicine, and health. Finally, essays on the postcolonial period focus on the politics of hunting, the commodification of animals and animal parts, the protection of animals and the environment, and political symbolism.

Review
"Centering Animals in Latin American History breaks new ground. In intellectually sophisticated essays, the contributors suggest that by providing a new history of animals, we cannot only understand more about the human/animal divide but also break down the category of the human, interrogate nature, and analyze the form in which the past becomes history. In this way, this collection writes animals into Latin American history."—Pete Sigal, author of The Flower and the Scorpion: Sexuality and Ritual in Early Nahua Culture

"In this engaging and generative collection of essays, editors Martha Few and Zeb Tortorici take us beyond the implications of the Columbian Exchange to show how a wide range of animals—including locusts, cattle, monkeys, fur seals, llamas, birds, and goats—actively shaped Latin American history and culture. Centering Animals in Latin American History does more than just restore animals to visibility while examining human ideas about and practices toward nonhuman animals: it makes it impossible to look at Latin American history without taking into consideration the nonhuman animals that materially and symbolically cocreated our world."—Brett Mizelle, author of Pig

“The volume’s methodological variety, its engaging subject matter, and its readability, together with its bibliography, will prove useful and attractive not just to scholars and activists but also to students of Latin American history from the colonial period into the twentieth century.” (Lina del Castillo Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

“It is accessible but still sophisticated and intriguing for scholars of modern and colonial Latin America, historians of science and of medicine, environmental historians, and scholars in the growing multidisciplinary ?eld of animal studies….. In sum, this is a notable volume for how it bridges colonial and postcolonial histories, expansively de?nes animal history, and packs in so much variety into so brief of a text.” (Emily Wakild H-Environment, H-Net Reviews)

“Overall, the volume’s approach is methodologically innovative and challenging and shows that the descriptive and analytical presence of animals in history writing does not necessarily centre them…. it is certainly a significant push toward the understanding of the region’s natural history and will delight readers from various disciplinary backgrounds.”  (Leopoldo Cavaleri Gerhardinger and Dannieli Firme Herbst European Review of Latin American and Caribbean Studies)

"This anthology  . . . is the very best example of a new trend in historiography that studies non-human animals as our partners in the generation of history."   (Abel A. Alves Journal of Latin American Studies)

"This volume clearly meets the editors' expectations that animal-centered perspectives can provide new and interesting interpretations of past events." (Peter W. Stahl Journal of Anthropological Research)

"Brings local and imported animals into dialogue with humans in colonial and postcolonial Latin America, creating a conversation that examines, crosses and perhaps dissolves boundaries among species. The end result not only affirms that human history is profoundly shaped by animals, but lays the groundwork for the way the complex project of investigating historical human– nonhuman relationships might be undertaken."  (Sarah Newman Social Anthropology)

“[T]his is a fascinating collection of essays that will be of great use to environmental historians, as well as to scholars interested in animal studies. By ‘centering’ animals in history, many of the volume’s essays break new ground and introduce fresh approaches to old topics.”  (Thomas Klubock Environmental History)

"Centering Animals is an important addition to animal studies that simultaneously provides a new lens through which to view key issues in human history. Whether as resources, victims, or historical agents, animals have indeed been central to the development of Latin America. This book brings their contribution to the fore and opens exciting new avenues for future research." (Helen Cowie Hispanic American Historical Review 2015-11-01)

"The archives produced by elites, largely white and mainly men, render many of the others involved anonymous and voiceless. Yet we are learning how to hear them speak through complementary types of primary sources such as material culture. If anyone can do the same for animals, it will be the talented group of scholars who contributed to this volume."  (Andrew Sluyter Ethnohistory 2016-04-01)

I enjoyed this book but had trouble relating some of the stories to my own experiences in Latin America. It does give a good perspective on attitudes those south of the U.S. border have on animal life.

The Republic of Therapy: Triage and Sovereignty in West Africa’s Time of AIDS (Body, Commodity, Text), by Vinh-Kim Nguyen

The Republic of Therapy tells the story of the global response to the HIV epidemic from the perspective of community organizers, activists, and people living with HIV in West Africa. Drawing on his experiences as a physician and anthropologist in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, Vinh-Kim Nguyen focuses on the period between 1994, when effective antiretroviral treatments for HIV were discovered, and 2000, when the global health community acknowledged a right to treatment, making the drugs more available. During the intervening years, when antiretrovirals were scarce in Africa, triage decisions were made determining who would receive lifesaving treatment. Nguyen explains how those decisions altered social relations in West Africa. In 1994, anxious to “break the silence” and “put a face to the epidemic,” international agencies unwittingly created a market in which stories about being HIV positive could be bartered for access to limited medical resources. Being able to talk about oneself became a matter of life or death. Tracing the cultural and political logic of triage back to colonial classification systems, Nguyen shows how it persists in contemporary attempts to design, fund, and implement mass treatment programs in the developing world. He argues that as an enactment of decisions about who may live, triage constitutes a partial, mobile form of sovereignty: what might be called therapeutic sovereignty.

Review
“Neither activist, nor politician, nor patient, nor pharmaceutical provider, Nguyen brings a more objective perspective to the AIDS crisis, even as he gives a first- hand account and conveys his close relationships with HIV-positive patients. A telling and provocative study of AIDS treatment in Africa, The Republic of Therapy offers no prospective solutions, but highlights the complexities and power dynamics inherent in the process of intervention.” - Sarah Fletcher, Montreal Review of Books

“[A] book that can and will be read by audiences far beyond the domain of medical anthropology. The resultant volume captures the evanescent history of a slowly developing crisis within the rapidly changing landscape of postcolonial health in sub-Saharan Africa. In this unsparing and clear-eyed account, Nguyen admirably sets forth the difficult but necessary task for contemporary social scientists in the critique of global health practices.” - Jeremy A. Greene, Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences

“[P]ath-breaking. . . . Nguyen’s strengths as an ethnographer are his capacity to move among different organizations and institutions, his sensitivity to the roles he plays in these contexts, and his long-term engagement with local activists and other informants, and he parries these strengths into a nuanced account of the urban politics of triage and HIV in West Africa.” - Betsey Brada, Somatosphere

“This work is notable not only for the quality of its craft but also the degree to which it lends a personal face to political and economic crisis.... Written in lucid, largely understated prose and drawing on the author’s long experience as both physician and anthropologist, the result is sure to provoke discussion and reaction well beyond the discipline.” - Peter Redfield, American Anthropologist

“The activist, physician, and anthropologist Vinh-Kim Nguyen has written an engaged, rigorous, and compelling account of the years when, in West Africa, AIDS treatment started to become available and persons living with HIV began to organize. With insight and sympathy, he explores how new political forms were thus invented in Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, combining therapeutic sovereignty and health democracy, triage of patients and empowerment of communities, confessions and accusations.”—Didier Fassin, author of When Bodies Remember: Experiences and Politics of AIDS in South Africa

aweesome
By Sean
its an awesome book, especially for medical antropologist, which is the course this was required for.

Its eye opening and has a lot of golden lines that open up your perspective to being more reflexive. This is a MUST for any in-field research regarding this particular area or AIDS in general (would be an awesome tool for asian cultures because u get a full array of experience from another continent, especially where the problem started)

This was not a thrilling book by any means, but it was informative. I read it in little chunks so I could get through it.

The Guatemala Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The Latin America Readers)From Duke University Press Books

This reader brings together more than 200 texts and images in a broad introduction to Guatemala's history, culture, and politics. In choosing the selections, the editors sought to avoid representing the country only in terms of its long experience of conflict, racism, and violence. And so, while offering many perspectives on that violence, this anthology portrays Guatemala as a real place where people experience joys and sorrows that cannot be reduced to the contretemps of resistance and repression. It includes not only the opinions of politicians, activists, and scholars, but also poems, songs, plays, jokes, novels, short stories, recipes, art, and photographs that capture the diversity of everyday life in Guatemala. The editors introduce all of the selections, from the first piece, an excerpt from the Popol Vuh, a mid-sixteenth-century text believed to be the single most important source documenting pre-Hispanic Maya culture, through the final selections, which explore contemporary Guatemala in relation to neoliberalism, multiculturalism, and the dynamics of migration to the United States and of immigrant life. Many pieces were originally published in Spanish, and most of those appear in English for the first time.

Glorious Guatemala
By Joao Carlos Machado de Paula
The Guatemala Reader is a rare book that can be helpful to everybody starting to learn about this marvelous country, but also as an organizer for those that, like me, started to read everything about Guatemala in a kind of disorganized way. Having read before other titles of this series, The Guatemala Reader is the one I liked the most so far.

Tertulia
By Dale Ray Thomas
A tertulia is often an informal gathering of minds to discuss politics, current events, literature, art, culture, etc. THE GUATEMALAN READER is a portable tertulia, one you can carry in your pocket. No taxis or excuses for being late are needed. You merely find a quite place, open the book and your mind, and you will learn about Guatemala from A thru Z. What was Maya life before the arrival of the Spanish? What is all the fuss about the Popol Vuh? How was the Maya code broken? What was the role of chocolate? How was rape used to control the masses? Why is Rigoberta Menchu so well known? No matter to which page you turn, you will interesting, well-written articles that will captivate you.

Queequeg's Coffin: Indigenous Literacies and Early American Literature, by Birgit Brander Rasmussen

The encounter between European and native peoples in the Americas is often portrayed as a conflict between literate civilization and illiterate savagery. That perception ignores the many indigenous forms of writing that were not alphabet-based, such as Mayan pictoglyphs, Iroquois wampum, Ojibwe birch-bark scrolls, and Incan quipus. Queequeg's Coffin offers a new definition of writing that comprehends the dazzling diversity of literature in the Americas before and after European arrivals. This groundbreaking study recovers previously overlooked moments of textual reciprocity in the colonial sphere, from a 1645 French-Haudenosaunee Peace Council to Herman Melville's youthful encounters with Polynesian hieroglyphics.

By recovering the literatures and textual practices that were indigenous to the Americas, Birgit Brander Rasmussen reimagines the colonial conflict as one organized by alternative but equally rich forms of literacy. From central Mexico to the northeastern shores of North America, in the Andes and across the American continents, indigenous peoples and European newcomers engaged each other in dialogues about ways of writing and recording knowledge. In Queequeg's Coffin, such exchanges become the foundation for a new kind of early American literary studies.

Public Properties: Museums in Imperial Japan (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society), by Noriko Aso

In the late nineteenth century, Japan's new Meiji government established museums to showcase a national aesthetic heritage. Inspired by Western museums and expositions, these institutions were introduced by government officials hoping to spur industrialization and self-disciplined public behavior, and to cultivate an "imperial public" loyal to the emperor. Japan's network of museums expanded along with its colonies. By the mid-1930s, the Japanese museum system had established or absorbed institutions in Taiwan, Korea, Sakhalin, and Manchuria. Not surprising, colonial subjects' views of Japanese imperialism differed from those promulgated by the Japanese state. Meanwhile, in Japan, philanthropic and commercial museums were expanding, revising, and even questioning the state-sanctioned aesthetic canon. Public Properties describes how museums in Japan and its empire contributed to the reimagining of state and society during the imperial era, despite vigorous disagreements about what was to be displayed, how, and by whom it was to be seen.

Review
"Public Properties demonstrates that Japan's development of museums reflected its growth into a modern nation-state. Yet the book is more than a history of the museum in modern Japan. Noriko Aso offers a comprehensive account of how public and private institutions came together in the formation of national and imperial ideals, pointing out how museums in Japan's colonies were conceived to take advantage of local conditions while emphasizing the larger mission of empire."—Stefan Tanaka, author of New Times in Modern Japan

"Public Properties will be an important book in Japanese history and intersecting fields including colonial studies, public culture, art history, and museum studies. Noriko Aso shows how integral a modern museum culture was to the formation of an 'imperial public' in Japan during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth. She provides original perspectives on questions of collective identity and political culture during the imperial era and sheds new light on key issues in the field of modern Japanese history."—Leslie Pincus, author of Authenticating Culture in Imperial Japan: Kuki Shuzo and the Rise of National Aesthetics

"By skillfully juxtaposing her analysis of government and private exhibition spaces, the author offers bold and compelling explanations for how artistic objects were used to create new publics that helped form collective identification with Japan's imperial state in the early twentieth century. No reader will fail to be edified by this thoughtful and instructive study." (Tom Havens Journal of Japanese Studies)

" . . . this book could easily be used as an exciting portal for introducing students to diverse aspects of modern Japanese history and its clever theoretical framework will undoubtedly serve Japan scholars well." (Charles V. Reed H-Empire, H-Net Reviews)

"[A]n important contribution to the emerging scholarship on museums as public properties in Japan during the Imperial period and is one for those interested in Japanese history, art history and museum studies."  (Eriko Kay Asian Affairs)

“Aso’s study is an intriguing, and refreshingly straightforward, examination of the shaping of the Japanese public…. This is a remarkably accessible text highlighting a set of ideas with implications and lessons that reach far beyond the case study’s time and place and straight into the musings of museum studies today, complete with reproductions of historical photographs, documentation and other ephemera that add a welcome visual touchstone to Aso’s detailed accounts.” (Jessica Sattell JQ Magazine)

"[Public Properties is] of interest to Japan and East Asia scholars as well as museum studies specialists.... [The] book is a welcome addition to one of the most vibrant recent areas of scholarly attention, the place of aesthetics in the creation of modern Japanese nationalism." (Mark Jones American Historical Review)

“Aso has provided an excellent, and much-needed, history of exhibition spaces and practices in twentieth-century imperial Japan. This study fills an important gap in English-language museum studies scholarship and will be useful reading for scholars of Japanese history, twentieth-century visual culture, and colonial studies.” (Charlotte Eubanks Asian Ethnology)

Fascinating Study
By EdM.
This foray into the study of Japanese museums in the Imperial age (1868-1945) is a showcase of scholarship that although written for the academic set can be readily enjoyed by those with a strong interest in Japanese history or museum studies. The book has five chapters and includes topics such as the origins of the national museums as a way of competing with western nations and how the Imperial Household became bound to the national museum system.

The third chapter on colonial properties is very interesting. The museum system set up in the territories of Taiwan and Korea were examples on selective historical perspectives as approved by both the colonial authorities and Tokyo. Following this are two examples of private museums run apart from government oversight as well as one that was proposed but never built.

Finally, a look at how department stores in the twenties and thirties also became places for the public to look at showcased art and sculpture that drew in customers. The final analysis is that the Japanese museum system did indeed create a national aesthetic heritage that inspired the public in its pride of culture while at the same time disseminating information on other cultures within the Japanese Empire. An excellent book and well recommended.

Lost in Transition: Ethnographies of Everyday Life after Communism, by Kristen Ghodsee

Lost in Transition tells of ordinary lives upended by the collapse of communism. Through ethnographic essays and short stories based on her experiences with Eastern Europe between 1989 and 2009, Kristen Ghodsee explains why it is that so many Eastern Europeans are nostalgic for the communist past. Ghodsee uses Bulgaria, the Eastern European nation where she has spent the most time, as a lens for exploring the broader transition from communism to democracy. She locates the growing nostalgia for the communist era in the disastrous, disorienting way that the transition was handled. The privatization process was contested and chaotic. A few well-connected foreigners and a new local class of oligarchs and criminals used the uncertainty of the transition process to take formerly state-owned assets for themselves. Ordinary people inevitably felt that they had been robbed. Many people lost their jobs just as the state social-support system disappeared. Lost in Transition portrays one of the most dramatic upheavals in modern history by describing the ways that it interrupted the rhythms of everyday lives, leaving confusion, frustration, and insecurity in its wake.

Review
“The collapse of the Soviet empire entailed not only the blitzkrieg dissolution of the socialist economies and one-party states of Eastern Europe but also immediate accidental and incidental changes in the everyday lives of its residents. With an ear for the ironic, the sensual, the playful, and the tragic, Kristen Ghodsee tells personal stories from this period of dissolution, which began several decades before the Berlin Wall came down. Drawing from her encounters during many years of research in Bulgaria, she portrays the changing nature of experience in that place during that time. Though understood as impoverished at the time, this socialist experiment reveals, in retrospect, lives filled with adventure, surprising friendships, and an openness to forms of engagement and being that makes the fullness of the free market and democracy in the post–Cold War order of today seem, by comparison, pale and predictable.”—John Borneman, Princeton University

“These charming essays have an unintended consequence. Not only are they a documentary ethnography of the lives of people caught up in the painful transition from socialism to capitalism. They are also a sort of bildungsroman of a young American discovering another world and shedding stereotypes.”—Maria Todorova, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

“Lost in Transition tells stories about how the lives of ordinary people changed after the fall of the Soviet Union. The author… navigates the task of producing a balanced account of the transition from communism to capitalism with skill…. The continuation of this project will surely enrich the body of literature on the subject.” (Sahar Razavi International Feminist Journal of Politics)

“[A] captivating collection of ethnographic essays and short stories about real people and fictional characters whose daily lives were turned upside down after the collapse of communism. . . . There is nothing careless or self-indulgent about Ghodsee’s writing. Her probing inquisitiveness, together with her astute thoughts and vivid observations, breathe life into each and every character in the book, from ketchup smugglers and flashy mobsters to shrewd entrepreneurs and irate shepherds, and bring the reader closer to everyday life after communism.” (Vasiliki P. Neofotistos American Ethnologist)

“Ghodsee’s stories beautifully demonstrate how nostalgic sentiments do not mean a return to the past but are part of a coping mechanism during hard times. . . . I would highly recommend the book in various classrooms to introduce the intimate experiences of Cold War, communism, and post-communism, as well as to broaden the understanding of modern Europe, and theworld which continues the legacies of the Cold War. Courses on ethnographic methods as well as ethnographies of post-socialism will also find use in these compelling stories and experimental writings.” (Yuson Jung Anthropological Quarterly)

“Without having lived through it first hand, it is hard to grasp the magnitude of the change to daily life in the Eastern Bloc after the collapse of the region's Communist regimes in the late 20th century. Not only was this a time of fundamental system change in the higher echelons of government, it was also a significant juncture in the lives and prospects of ordinary people. And, contrary to Western assumptions about the inherent superiority of democracy, for many the transition has been extremely challenging. In this accessible book, ethnographer Kristen Ghodsee turns her attention to the human costs of the passing of Communism in Bulgaria.” (Hester Vaizey Times Higher Education Supplement)

Lost In Transition - A must-read!
By Max
In "Lost In Transition" Kristen Ghodsee weaves together storytelling and revealed truths, hard-and-fast reality and ethnographic fiction, to achieve her desired effect - namely, to get readers to think about what it might have been like living under communism, and what it might have been like to live through the transition to capitalism. So often we get wrapped up in the political and economical analysis of cities, countries and eras, that we forget about the individual people living under those circumstances. Through storytelling and ethnography, Ghodsee deftly paints a picture that is more graspable, palpable and comprehensible than most academic books, and that's because this text skillfully straddles both lines - reading it, I can guarantee that you will learn something, but throughout reading I was completely enraptured by the stories, by the experiences these individuals lived through, and by the complete upheaval of a political and economic system that irreversibly impacted their lives. I literally couldn't put it down. Apart from the academic successes of this book, it was FUN to read; from a hilarious story of train smuggling, to a raucous U2 pilgrimage, to numerous conspiracy theories, to the tender story of lost love, I was wholly captivated. This book is a must-read for every college student, for every person interested in communism, and even for those who are not. You would be doing yourself a disservice to pass over this book.

Haunting and poetic--a book for these times
By Diotima Rediviva
I'm someone with a new and passionate interest in Bulgaria, but have recommended this to a dozen friends who wouldn't know the difference between Plovdiv and Philadelphia, simply because it is such a brilliant reflection on the strange times we live in. What I particularly cherish about this book is that one comes away with the sense that individual lives ARE the substance of history, that personal choices DO make a difference. (Something hard to remember in the media-saturated thoughtscape of today.) I especially admire how Ghodsee at the end of the book -- after ten Chekhovian tales of life in the former East Bloc countries post-1989 -- spirals out from the intimate details of everyday experience back out to the big, tough questions about historical change and what she rightly calls "the power and enduring nature of the Marxist critique of capitalism." It's gentle, but devastating, and the resonances for an American reader are inescapable. "It made me feel sad but hopeful," said my 24-year-old niece, who read it on her break from law school last month ... and I can only agree.

Not just for academics
By Willard
The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, and soon thereafter communist dictatorships in Europe were a thing of the past. Free elections were held, the omnipresent secret police forces were disbanded, and a free-market economy was introduced. All of this was seen in the West as an unmitigated cause for celebration, and indeed many people in the former Soviet bloc countries are freer and better off than they were behind the Iron Curtain. And yet throughout Eastern Europe there is substantial nostalgia for life as it existed before 1989. How can this be?

In a series of essays and short stories, anthropologist and writer Kristen Ghodsee explores this question by examining the effects of "The Changes" on the lives of ordinary people in Bulgaria. Some of the pieces are hilariously funny, some poignantly sad, and all are insightful and beautifully written. It is not often that a book from a university press is hard to put down, but Lost in Transition is such a work.
